Pulitzer Prize Winning Authors

|
April is the month that the announcement of the year's Pulitzer Prize winners are made. Mainstream newspapers and literary magazines begin to announce the recipients, highlight the works, and offer plaudits and criticism.
But did you know that there are many more categories than journalism and fiction? Prize awards are made by the president of Columbia University to winners in 21 categories in two areas: Journalism and Letters, Drama & Music. The Journalism categories also include news and feature photography and editorial cartooning, while the Letters, Drama & Music categories include poetry.
This month we give you a curated selection of Pulitzer winners from IOBA members. Enjoy!

Anne Tyler 17-Volume Collection of Signed First Editions, with Correspondence

An impressive collection of novels by the Pulitzer Prize winning author, comprising all published works released from 1972 to 2006 (and thus missing her first three, and last four, works), as well as her two juvenile titles.
Your Place is Empty is also of particular interest, being an imprint of the William B. Ewert fine press in Concord, New Hampshire. With the exception of
Digging to America, they are all signed by Anne Tyler directly on the title pages - no small feat considering that, until recently, the author did not make public appearances or grant interviews. Even sending items to her for the purpose of obtaining signatures was a complicated process, as illustrated in the four postcards and three greeting cards included here, in which Tyler requests they be sent such that she can receive them without leaving her home.
The original recipient of these also sent the author a number of gifts, for which she expresses thanks in her correspondence.

The Death of a Salesman

This is Miller's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play of 1949. Many available signed copies have Miller's signature to a tipped-in end page; however, this copy has been signed by the author on the half-title page.
Additionally, there are two pages laid-in documenting the provenance of Miller's signature. The first is a copy of a letter of June 20, 2003, to the then owner of the book on Miller's letterhead. The letter notes that Mr. Miller is happy to sign books, but in the future please include post-paid packaging for the return shipment. The letter is signed by Julia Bolus, assistant to A. M. Also laid-in is a copy of the front of envelope that contained the letter, showing a June postmark and Miller's return address.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
Lila: An Inquiry into Morals was a nominated finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1992.
This semi-autobiographical story takes place in the autumn as the author sails his boat down the Hudson River. Phaedrus, the author's alter ego, is jarred out of his solitary routine by an encounter with Lila, a straightforward but troubled woman who is nearing a mental breakdown.

Autobiography of David Hume Kennerly, a photo-journalist/photographer who became UPI's bureau chief in Saigon at just 24, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize at age 25 for photographs that "capture the loneliness and desolation of war" and who then became "Personal Photographer to the President" during Gerald Ford's presidency.

Tales of the South Pacific
by James Michener

Inscription was made In Miami: February 3, 1958 to a member of the Sea Bees who had met Michener in the Pacific. The recipient was working in a restaurant on Miami Beach frequented by Michener. They struck up a conversation and the next day had the book signed. There is also a small newspaper article taped inside.
According the nephew, the book resided for many years in a case in a VFW which perhaps accounts for the poor handling of the Dust jacket. Additionally, the nephew told me that his uncle was mentioned in the book (not by name) I can't confirm this.
Tales of the South Pacific won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948. Available Here.
