IBLA returns to Radford University

IBLA Top Prize Winner is 16-year-old Elia Cecino from Italy

Two pianists, a trombonist and an accordion/piano duo are considered among the best concert musicians in the world per the IBLA Grand Prize World Music Competition.
These performers begin a United States tour at Radford University on April 27.

IBLA is an elite international music competition located in the Sicilian city of Ragusa-Ibla. It showcases musical talent of the highest caliber. This is the 26th year of this competition.

Founded by Radford University, this competition began in 1981 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Hungarian composer Bela Bartók's birth. Originally the Bartók Competition, it later expanded to honor Russian composers Dmitri Kabalevsky and Sergei Prokofiev. It now honors the memory of the great pianist and musician, Bartok's protege and Radford Competition jury chairman for decades, Gyorgy Sandor. Sandor, a dear friend of Fellin’s, served as jury chairman in 1991, when the competition awarded Salvatore Moltisanti first prize.

Student and community chorus presents Mozart’s “Requiem”
Two very different populations have one thing in common – Monday nights with Mozart. For the first time, Radford University students and community members together formed the Radford University Chorus and rehearsed Monday evenings. From this effort, in an April 24 concert, the group will present Mozart’s “Requiem.”

The University Chorus is an initiative brought to the university by Meredith Bowen, assistant professor of music and director of the university’s choirs. Each week through out the spring semester the chorus met and prepared for the upcoming concert.

“Students and community members alike have learned from each other,” Bowen said. “This ensemble has created a sense of intergenerational community unlike any in the area."

Theatre students are "Making A Scene" again

Story and illustration by Wesley Young
Quirky, zany, deep, dark…these intriguing words could describe the one-act plays that will be presented during the last week of classes in Radford University’s Theatre Department. Each year, with the coming of flowers and warmer breezes and the imminent end of the spring semester also comes “Making a Scene: An Evening of One Acts.” This project of the advanced directing class features each aspiring director’s final project presentation. The number of one acts depends on the number of students and this year that total is seven.

Wesley Young, professor of theatre and instructor of the class says, “The students get to choose their material, with few parameters, so anything goes, pretty much.” Young went on to say that, the result is usually a potpourri of the “way-out, profound and sometimes wacky.”
