Hillsborough Recognizes March as American Red Cross Month

Pictured: Committeeman Doug Tomson, Mayor Carl Suraci, Sean Andersen from the American Red Cross Board, and Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley
The American Red Cross has touched many lives in Hillsborough, across the country and around the world. American Red Cross Month is a special time to recognize our everyday heroes and thank those who contribute to the mission of the Red Cross by donating their time, money or blood and encouraging everyone to help others in need.

Throughout the past year, the organization launched thousands of disaster relief operations, responding to an emergency every 8 minutes, to help people affected by fires, floods, hurricanes and tornadoes.  The American Red Cross provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families, and provides training in CPR, aquatics safety, and first aid.

In Hillsborough, the Red Cross works tirelessly through its employees and many volunteers to support us when disaster strikes, when someone needs life-saving blood, or the comfort of a helping hand.

At the March 28th Township Committee Meeting, the Mayor and Township Committee presented a proclamation declaring March as American Red Cross Month and  encouraged all Hillsborough Township residents to support this organization and its noble humanitarian mission.
Gil Pilarte Named HHS Educational Services Professional of the Year

At the March 28th Township Committee Meeting Gil Pilarte was honored for being named Hillsborough High School Educational Services Professional of the Year for 2017.

Mr. Pilarte, who has been a faculty member of Hillsborough High School since 2006,  is a Student Assistance Counselor and Co-Advisor for Sources of Strength and Peer Mentoring at Hillsborough High School.  He is known for his sense of humor, ability to help students work through their concerns productively, and for providing a safe haven for students who are struggling and in need of assistance.

March is National Nutrition Month

Pictured: Mayor Carl Suraci, ShopRite's Registered Dietitian Samantha Nuzio, and Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley

At the March 28th Township Committee meeting, the Mayor and Township Committee, in conjunction with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and ShopRite of Hillsborough, declared March as National Nutrition Month.  The theme for 2017 is "Put Your Best Fork Forward".

Food is the substance by which life is sustained and the type, quality, and amount of food that individuals consume each day plays a vital role in overall health and physical fitness and aids in the prevention of chronic diseases. There is a need for continuing nutrition education and wide-scale effort to enhance good eating practices.

National Nutrition Month, a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, helps spread the word about the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise.  It started in 1973 as National Nutrition Week and as popularity grew, National Nutrition Month was established in 1980.

The Mayor and Township Committee encourage all Hillsborough residents to join the campaign and become concerned about their nutrition and the nutrition of others in the hope of achieving optimum health for both today and tomorrow.

Hillsborough Township Recognizes 2016 Top Cops
Three Veteran Officers Receive Recognition

Each year the Township Police Department selects "Top Cops", one from each Patrol Squad, to be recognized for their exceptional performance for the previous year. The award recipients are determined based on a score devised from the Annual Job Performance Evaluations, along with a ranking achieved from their respective supervisors and peers.

For the first time, two Officers tied for the highest ranking on one of the two Patrol Squads. Officer Joseph Paschall, Officer Jason Beverett and Officer Craig Heindrichs were awarded the "Top Cop" title for 2016, based upon their outstanding performance throughout the past year. "Top Cops" are formally recognized by the Department and receive an acknowledgement in their personnel file. In addition, Officers Paschall, Beverett and Heindrichs will have their names engraved on a plaque displayed in the lobby of Police Headquarters honoring each year's recipients since the program's inception in 1996. In addition, they will be awarded a merit bar that is worn above their uniform badge.

"Congratulations to these three veteran officers on their exemplary service to the Township, earning them this distinct honor," commented Committeeman Frank DelCore, Liaison to Public Safety.

RWJ Health Network Awarded Contract to Provide Emergency Medical Services at No Cost to the Township of Hillsborough
Township to Realize an Average Savings of $300,000 per year initially

Hillsborough Township Committee voted Tuesday evening to award a contract to Robert Wood Johnson Health Network to provide Emergency Medical Services for the Township, replacing the current provider, Hillsborough Emergency Medical Services Corporation (HEMs).
  • The vote essentially allows for a two month transition period from HEMs to work with RWJ to allow for a seamless migration to the new service provider, who currently offers similar services in eight other Somerset County municipalities as well as other out of county towns.

Prior to the final decision by the Township Committee, the following documents were shared with the public via the Township website: a question and answer document, the bid response from RWJ, the Fitch Report, a memo from the CFO regarding the award of contract for Emergency Medical Services and the evaluation scores.

"After thoughtful evaluation and deliberation, we are proceeding with the consideration of a contract award to Robert Wood Johnson Mobile Health Service, the only bidder in the process, to provide basic life support (BLS) service for the Township," stated Mayor Carl Suraci.
