ANNOUNCEMENTS
You’re invited to join Luther College Dance Marathon on April 8 from noon- midnight, as we celebrate and stand on our feet for 12 hours. April 8 is full of dancing, laser tag, stories from families that we help support, and fundraising for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The Luther College Concert Band, under the direction of Joan deAlbuquerque, will present a concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 9, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The performance will also be streamed live.

Spend J-Term in the Cascade Mountains! Study environmental issues at Holden Village, a mountain retreat center near Chelan, WA. With over 250 inches of snow each winter, Holden is a unique and splendid place to think about environmental issues. Attend an information meeting Thursday April 6 at 9:00 p.m. in Valders 374 or contact Jon Jensen.

Featuring a repertoire of Baroque and Renaissance compositions by Josquin des Pres, J.S. Bach, George Friederich Handel and others, Luther College Collegium Musicum will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Collegium Musicum is directed by Kathy Reed. Performers include Luther students and community members. 

Luther seniors Betsy Fawcett and Patrick Larson received Fulbright awards for the 2017-18 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Fawcett and Larson were awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants for English teaching assistantships in Ukraine and Bulgaria, respectively. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement as well as record of service and demonstrated leadership in their respective fields.

Juniors Bakhita Gonçalves Soares and William Jeide have been selected as Peace Scholars for the 2016-17 academic year. The pair will spend seven weeks this summer studying peace and conflict resolution in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway. Luther is one of six colleges founded by Norwegian-American immigrants in the 19th century that sponsor the annual summer Peace Scholars program in Norway. The program is designed to deepen students' understanding of the central issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace. 

Student Employment: Strengths Program Assistant - Looking for an exciting, challenging, and rewarding para-professional work experience for 2017-2018? The Strengths-Based Servant Leadership Program is accepting applications for two Strengths Program Assistants. They serve as student ambassadors for strengths-based education initiatives at Luther College. A job description is located in the Career Center. Applicants should submit a cover letter, one-page resume, and a list of two reference contacts to Ann Landstrom by Sunday, April 16 at 10 p.m.

Known for their original compositions, deconstruction of songs from the rock and R&B world, and, recently, their unique interpretation of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring," the jazz trio known as The Bad Plus will bring their innovative music to the Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7. Speaking on their work with unaccompanied minors entering the United States from Mexico and Central America, Luther visiting assistant professor of social work, Susan Schmidt and immigration lawyer Yer L. Vang will join formerly undocumented student, Pedro Lopez ’17, to host a panel titled "Immigration and Unaccompanied Minors" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in Olin 102. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and HOLA-Enlaces.

Examining the gendered aspects of drug use and policy in Ukraine, Jennifer Carroll will deliver a lecture titled "Of Methadone and Men: The Gender of Drug Use in Wartime Ukraine" at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in the Dahl Centennial Union, Hammarskjold Lounge. Carroll details her research on opioid use and abuse to illustrate the impact of gendered social experiences on the treatment and prevention of opioid misuse, and the socio-political ramifications of those efforts.

In Barnets beste: Growing Up in Norway , Rachel Peterson,'04, explores childhood, children's rights and her own personal upbringing in Norway in the seventh annual Luther College Knut Gjerset lecture. Peterson's lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in the CFL Recital Hall. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge.

Area women of all ages have an opportunity to learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning, and charitable giving at the 13th Annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar on Friday, April 7.Hosted by Luther, the one-day educational seminar will be presented 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Hotel Winneshiek. The seminar's keynote speaker is Michelle Janssen, Certified Fund Raising Executive, long-time development professional and women's philanthropy advocate.

Join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, April 6, in Valders 262 for a screening of the TEDTalk by Executive Communications Specialist and Journalist, Leezia Dhalla, Hiding in plain sight - my life as an undocumented American. KWLC Radio Presents: Norwegian Folk Music Night with Vidar Skrede. Join us in Marty's for an evening of traditional Norwegian music with Vidar Skrede, a renowned fiddler from Western Norway on April 6 from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Take a study break! Bring your ears! Prescription for Change: Ending America's Opioid Crisis will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. Produced by MTV and the Jed Foundation, the documentary follows three young women in recovery and features a conversation between rapper Macklemore, the film's executive producer, and President Barack Obama. Sponsored by Luther Counseling Services, Wellness, Health Services, Active Minds, Helping Services Youth and Families, and Winneshiek County ERASE Coalition. 

Wondering how to keep track of your sources, create a bibliography and footnotes? Zotero (free application) helps you collect, manage, and cite your sources. Bring your laptop to our workshop and learn how to download Zotero and set it up to manage your resources (available for PCs and MACs). J-TERM 2018 IN TANZANIA: The Paideia 450 course People  and  Parks : Pastoralism and Conservation in East Africa is a cultural immersion experience based in Maasai villages, small towns, and conservation areas in northern Tanzania. An information meeting will be held on  Thursday, April 6, at 9:45 am in Koren 216 .  For more information  contact Lori Stanley or Brad Chamberlain . Note: Must have 60 credits by the end of fall semester to apply.

Featuring   black and white sequential photographs taken by Bob Modersohn, the photography exhibit "Click by click" will be on display April 5-May 21 in Preus Library. A reception for Modersohn will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in the Hovde Room of Preus Library. Printed on 6mm thick PVC plastic, the gallery features 11 black and white photo sequences taken by Modersohn during the 1970s and 1980s for The Des Moines Register.

Featuring sculptures by Decorah native Luke Severson, the art exhibit "Winn CO OP" will be on display March 30-April 29 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts. There will be an opening reception in the gallery at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 30.

Mayo Clinic College of Medicine information table -- Are you someone who wants to work in the healthcare field but are unaware of the many different careers besides nurse or physician that are out there? Come visit their information table in the Student Union on April 5 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. to learn about the many programs in the health field that are offered at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, MN!

The Diversity Center has an opening for a 6 hours per week Outreach Assistant position. We are looking for someone who is open and willing to learn (or knows about) intersectionality. You do NOT need to be a multicultural or international student to apply. Please apply on the Diversity Center website. Questions? The top three candidates from each category will be recognized at the Leadership B​anquet on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Winners get Martin Luther Bobble Head!
