Resilient Families, Working Together

Dear Families,

back-school-bus.jpg On Wednesday we sent out an email notifying you of changes in summer school transportation. These difficult choices were made because of continued cuts in our budget from the State of Missouri. To summarize:

As always, our summer school program will be free. However, after months of budget review and evaluating ridership patterns, we have decided to change our transportation services for summer school in two ways:
  1. Eliminate the morning bus; the evening bus will run as it has in previous years.  We will continue providing transportation for students who are attending Y-Care from the Oak campus to the Cherry campus.
  2. Extend the ridership-eligibility radius to three or more miles around each campus.  In other words, if your child attend Cherry, and you live three or more miles from either Cherry or Oak, you will be eligible for free transportation. The same is true for children attending Oak. If you live three or more miles from the Oak or Cherry campus, you will be eligible for free bus transportation. If you have a question about whether or not your student is eligible for free transportation, please contact Carlos McClain at 816-361-7735 or email her at cmcclain@academielafayette.org. Put TRANSPORTATION CHANGES in the subject line.
With these changes we will save approximately $65,000 in costs this summer alone.

There has been much discussion on social media about these changes. As always I am amazed by the resiliency and creativity of our families. I see you working together to come up with solutions including walking school buses, car pools, and transportation co-ops. Thank you for joining together to find solutions for everyone.

The question of charging for bus service has come up numerous times. We had not wanted to add another financial burden on our families because bus service has always been free. However, we are researching this option for the future.

At this point we are undecided on whether or not these changes to the transportation services will continue during the school year. We will contact our families as soon as we have a final decision.

Thank you for your strong support of our school and of each other.

Sincerely,

Elimane Mbengue

From the Cherry and Oak Principals

Dear Families,

The recent shooting at a school in San Bernardino is another reminder that schools need to constantly review and revise their safety procedures. After this tragedy, we discussed the implications in our leadership meeting, and it will also be addressed by our health and wellness committee at their next meeting.

It is also a good idea to frequently share our practices with parents, so that they know what measures are in place. Here are some of the ways that we address safety at Académie Lafayette:
  1. Required drills (fire, tornado, intruder/lockdown, playground evacuation, secure perimeter, stay in place)
  2. Annual safety trainings
  3. Partnership with KCPD for intruder training
  4. Site visits/reviews from UCM, our sponsor
  5. Health and wellness committee
  6. Reviews from our insurance company safety consultant
  7. Ongoing discussions in building-level faculty meetings
  8. Exterior doors are locked, with video cameras and buzzers
  9. Visitors are required to check in and get a visitor badge
Student safety is our number one priority, and we want to assure parents that we take it very seriously.

Thank you for your support!

painless fundraising

The Painless Fundraising Committee will be collecting labels at the end of April so please send in all Box Tops, Best Choice (including Clearly Organic) and Tyson A+ labels to your teachers. Please be sure to label your baggie with your teacher's name so that your class gets credit. If you have a lot of labels, it would speed up counting
if you could separate them into different baggies by label type. The class with the most labels will win an ice cream social at the end of the school year! This is an ongoing program so please continue collecting throughout the year.

If you are interested in helping us count on Sunday, May 7th, or have questions about the painless fundraising program, please contact Lynne Yarnevich at lynneporthouse@hotmail.com.
