Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 04 03 17

Parents and Guardians,

Students did a great job with our first round of state testing last week. Even though the change in our daily schedule can be a challenge, students managed the disruption very well. Our next set of state tests will occur in early May and will coincide with the beginning of AP Exams.

This week, we have an Early Release scheduled for Wednesday. The school day actually ends at 1:00 p.m., but students will be dismissed for lunch at 12:15 and are free to leave campus at that time. Also, I wanted to remind you that next Friday, April 14th is a holiday for students and staff.

Lastly, I wanted to say "Thank You" to the Lovejoy Community in general, and specifically to the many parents and supporters who helped make Denim and Diamonds a great success this past Saturday . I am continually amazed at our community's commitment to our student's education as evidenced by your generosity with your time, skills, and financial resources. It is what makes Lovejoy unique, and I am thankful to be part of it.

Sincerely ,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

PTSA Parent Workshop: Suicide Prevention
Wednesday April 5th @ 7pm in the LHS Library
One of the most difficult challenges of parenting is realizing that you don't always know what our children are thinking and feeling. You might even be aware that suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescents, but you can't imagine your child might become one of those statistics. When do normal ups and downs of adolescents become something to worry about? And if you are worried about it, what can you do?

Although adults don't often know about it many of our kids experience symptoms of depression, think about suicide, make plans to die by suicide, and even make a suicide attempt each year.

During the day on Wednesday, April 5th, our students at Lovejoy will be presented with a suicide prevention program. However, at night we will be offering a PTSA parent prevention workshop. We will be having a guest speaker, Bobbi Gilbert (former Lovejoy parent,) whose own son committed suicide 23 months ago. Our goal is to help parents equip themselves with signs to be aware of, and how we can help our children!

The first step is to learn about the factors that can put a teen at risk for suicide. The more you know, the better you'll be prepared for understanding what can put your child at risk.

LHS Lady Leopard Golf
The Leopard Women's Golf Team competed in the Regional Preview Tournament, March 28th, at Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club.  The team finished 2nd overall out of 12 teams competing.  We did well, scoring a team total 370.  This was great for us to get to see the course one extra time before the district tournament.  I believe our girls are ready to put their best rounds of the year together for the district tournament, April 10th and 11th.
The ladies were lead by Sophomore Allie Bianchi.  Allie finished 1st overall, winning the tournament with her season best score of 77 this year.  She is playing very well.  Other scores:  Kendall Sailer, 96.  Mallory Sailer, 97.  Sophie Starnes, 98.  Katie Dragoo, 100.  Jazmine Veatch, 105.  Callie Mayfield, 106.

Leopard Softball
The Leopards have moved to 20-3 overall, and are tied for First Place in District 15-5A at 6-1. In one of their last outings, Alyssa DiFiore led the team with 7 RBI's, including a Grand Slam to help the Leopards defeated Royse City 15-3.

Leopard Volleyball
Post season accolades continue to mount up for the 2016 Leopard Volleyball team. Seniors Taylor Carty and Paige Becker have been recognized for not only their success on the court but more importantly their accomplishments in the classroom by Prep Volleyball
Taylor Carty was selected to Prep Volleyball Academic All-American 2nd Team

The Regional Championship will be fished against the Central Division on Lake Palestine April 22.

The top 50% of Regional finishers will move on to the State Tournament to be held in May on our home waters of Ray Roberts. The State Championship is a two-day event where qualifiers from all 4 divisions duke it out for over $30k in scholarship money.

LHS HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)
This past weekend the HOSA students were in Corpus Christi competing against 3,000 other HOSA members at the State level.  The Lovejoy students did an amazing job; all five competitors placed in the top ten and two will move on to Nationals on June 20-25 in Orlando Florida!  Each competitor had a written test and skills section in their event.

HOSA State results are:

Lauren Payne placed 1st in Sports Medicine
Taylor Carty placed 2nd in Clinical Nursing
Kennedy Miller placed 4h in Home Health Aide
Paige Christiansen placed 5 in Home Health Aide

LHS Colorguard
Congratulations to the Lovejoy HS Color Guard on their Scholastic A 4th place finish at the NTCA State Championships - this is the highest placement for the Color Guard in the program's history!  This has been an amazing season for the students, and we are so proud of their dedication, drive and passion for performing.

We are gearing up for our auditions next week, and hope everyone is excited about where we can grow next year!  Auditions are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5-7 pm.

LHS Track and Field
The Lovejoy Track and Field teams performed very well this past week at the Texas Relays in Austin. The girls 4X400M relay team consisting of Kassidy Litchenburg, Grace Ridgeway, Carsen McFadden, and Carson Hockersmith ran the fastest time of the year with a time of 4:00.21.

Grace Ridgeway placed 3rd overall in the Girls Pole Vault B division clearing 11' 10". Juliet Franz and Grace Ridgeway also represented Lovejoy well running neck and neck in the 100M Hurdles to send them into district looking strong and ready to compete. Ryan Brands ran a time of 4:33 in the 1600M and our boys Distance Medley Relay team consisting of Bradley Davis, Ryan Brands, William  Muirhead and Brett Pedersen ran a time of 11:03.

All other track athletes competed in the Allen Eagle Relays on Friday. Our boys 4X100M Relay team broke a school record with a time of 42.16. Chase Van Wagoner jumped a new school record in the Long Jump with a mark of 23' 2.5". Alaina Pierce once again tied our school record in girls high jump with a mark of 5'0". Lovejoy Baseball
The Lovejoy Baseball team currently sits in 4th place with a District record of 3-3. Unfortunately, we lost 2 hard fought games vs Forney last week. We played very well and made a couple of mistakes each game that cost us the game. Mason Marsh and Jacob Terwilliger were outstanding on the mound holding a very good Forney offense down for most of the games.

We will look to bounce back against Wylie 4-2 in district this week. We play Tuesday at home at 7:30 and head over to Wylie East Friday night at 7:30.

Please come out to the games and support the teams!

Fantastic Fossils: April 11
Join John S. Mead -- passionate Biology Teacher, Origins Explorer, and Nature Photographer -- as he takes us through his exciting participation in Dr. Lee Berger's excavation of a new human species, Homo naledi, from the Rising Star Cave in South Africa. This species of human ancestor is believed to be 900,000 to 2 million years old and was an incredible find. The discovery of Homo naledi is featured on the October 2015 cover of National Geographic Magazine, and in a current exhibit at the Perot Museum. Mr. Mead will share stories about the discovery, as well as his outstanding photos. This event is sponsored by the Lovejoy Gifted Association (LGA). LGA members and families may attend free. All middle school and high school students may attend the event for free with a current student ID. There is a $5 admission fee for adults who are not LGA members.
