Nick's Picks Mission Statement
Nick's Picks is a 501c3 charity established by liver transplant recipient Nick Wallace in 2012 that exists to support hospitalized children with serious, chronic illnesses. The charity's focus is to provide backpacks loaded with games, toys and comfort items to children - hospitalized and often living in isolation - in an effort to raise their spirits and keep them engaged through play.
My life changed in 2013 when I met Dr. Thomas Starzl.
Dr. Starzl performed the first successful liver transplant at the University of Colorado in 1967. He spent the rest of his life saving lives, like mine.
Nick Wallace, the 17-year old founder of Nick's Picks, spoke to over 150 employees at Intercept Pharmaceuticals Feb. 28 Nick was born with biliary atresia, a pediatric liver disease, and at the age of 13, received a life-saving liver transplant. Intercept is evaluating a therapy that could one day be delivered to patients such as Nick to treat the liver disease.
