Howard Rose ’50, former Tau Trustee, alumni advisor and Tau Chapter Man of the Year (1971), passed away on March 29 at age 86.

“Howard was an outstanding alumni supporter and a pillar of strength for the Tau Chapter during the difficult times in the 1960s and ‘70s,” said Jim Pritchett ’71. “He was always generous with his advice, talent and treasure — right up to the time of his passing. He enjoyed and took great pride in being a Kappa Sig for life. We will miss him.”  

Mr. Rose had a long and distinguished career practicing law and serving in various capacities as a community leader. In the 1960s, he served as Governor John Connally’s Chief of Staff, credited with helping shape and secure passage of landmark legislation to advance higher education in Texas.  

“I’ve known Howard since I was 17 years old, growing up in Midland, where he was practicing law at the time,” said Hagen McMahon ’66. “He rushed me to be a Kappa Sig and has been a strong influence on my life ever since.  He was a lifelong friend and a great man.”

A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 3201 Windsor Road, in Austin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to The University of Texas School of Law for the Howard V. Rose, Jr. Endowed Presidential Scholarship, 727 East Dean Keeton, Austin, TX 78705 or to The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Endowment Fund, 3201 Windsor Road, Austin, TX 78703.
