Good Friday

Dear Friends,

Last night we gathered with our brothers and sisters at Davidson Presbyterian Church and shared a meal and worshipped together. As part of that service we washed each other’s feet.  It was both a joyful and a humbling experience.  It was probably an uncomfortable experience for some.  Washing someone else’s feet is not a normal thing in our culture.  We do this every year on Maundy Thursday to remember the “new commandment” (Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum which means commandment) that Jesus gave his disciples to love sacrificially.

On Maundy Thursday we see that lived out in the washing of feet – humbling ourselves and moving out of our comfort zone for the sake of another.  On Good Friday we see that lived out as Jesus goes to the cross – the Passover Lamb who offered himself for the sake of the world so that we might truly live to all that is good and holy.

We might be uncomfortable talking about these things with our children but it is important that we do so.  Attending one or more of our Holy Week special services together or reading through the story together will open doors of conversation and will open eyes to thanksgiving and to new ways of living. Jesus modeled this for us.

Are you able to practice this “new commandment” in your own homes in this season?  As you reflect on the stories of Jesus suffering and crucifixion it will guide us into more faithful living and will better prepare us to offer joyful praise and thanksgiving when we celebrate the resurrection on Easter morning!

To God be the Glory!
