Social and Emotional Wellness, Learning and Supports in District 90 Presentation led by Karen Boozell and Ed Condon
Dr. Condon, Karen Boozell, Director of Special Education, and Willard Social Worker Suzanne McLeese provided an overview of the District's Social and Emotional Wellness, Learning and Supports. Lincoln Social Worker Sharon Payton brought greetings via video. Roosevelt Principal Larry Garstki contributed to the presentation by adding information about some of the social emotional curriculum and supports at Roosevelt. The presentation coincided with National School Social Worker Week (March 6-10), which was recognized by a proclamation from Gov. Rauner.

The presenters described the variety of social and emotional support services provided to students at each school. These services include classroom resources that help students develop empathy, formal expectations for student behavior, and extracurricular programs that complement and support social and emotional development. For instance, the CHAMPS program is offered at all District schools and the Second Step program is available at Willard and Lincoln. Roosevelt, Willard, and Lincoln all have formal student expectations that reflect each school's individual school culture. Banners and posters are prominently displayed throughout each school and describe the attributes of Lincoln School Pride, the Willard Way, and Roosevelt's High Five. District 90 schools also have service organizations, such as Willard's Kindly Wizards, Lincoln's Heartworks, and Roosevelt's two service clubs, that enable students to learn the benefits of volunteering and supporting their community. The presenters stressed the importance of all faculty and staff accepting responsibility for social emotional learning, not just social workers. The presentation included information on Roosevelt's Advisory Period; building relationships with students; collaborating with local community and social service organizations; social justice circles; and many other initiatives. Board members engaged in a spirited discussion and question & answer period with the presenters. Additional information can be viewed in the Board Packet.
