Fighting Charges, Strengthening Movements!

April 15th 4 - 6 p.m.
The Boreal at 450 W 3rd in Eugene

FREE!

A presentation and community discussion based on the Tilted Scales Collective's new book, A Tilted Guide to Being a Defendant.

Please join us for a community discussion about strengthening our struggles for liberation when facing criminal charges. This presentation and discussion are based on the ideas in A Tilted Guide to Being a Defendant. The Tilted Scales Collective is excited to bring to you this comprehensive guide for radicals about facing charges in the criminal legal system. Rather than being a how-to guide, this book offers a way of thinking about criminal charges that is based on defendants' goals: personal, political, and legal. And these goals are framed with this question in mind: "How is my case part of revolutionary struggle?"

Syrian Refugees: A Presentation by Tod Schneider

Unitarian Universalist Church at 1685 W 13th in Eugene
April 20th, 7 p.m.

The Unitarian Universalist Church will present a talk by guest speaker Tod Schneider followed by a short documentary on the Syrian refugee crisis.

Tod Schneider is a Eugene-based writer active in Community Supported Shelters and the Lane County Refugee Resettlement Coalition. He recently traveled to Greece as a member of a fact-finding team investigating conditions in refugee camps. The team provided assistance and interviewed and recorded the stories of refugees who risked everything attempting to reach safety in Europe, but now find themselves trapped in camps with minimal access to food, healthcare, and personal safety. Tod will discuss the trip and show slides from the group's experience.

Tod's talk will be followed by a showing of the PBS Frontline episode "Children of Syria" that features a Syrian family with four children living in the ruins of war-torn Aleppo. Filmed over a three year period, the documentary follows the family's flight to a refugee camp in Turkey and eventually to resettlement in a small town in Germany where they cope with the after-effects of trauma, dislocation, and loss while meeting the challenges of assimilation and acceptance in a foreign country.

This event is free and open to the community.

Starhawk: Vision and Story for Challenging Times

April 27th, 6 p.m.
Downtown Eugene Public Library at 10th & Olive

Says activist and author Starhawk, "Stories tell us who we are and who we can be.  They can limit us or liberate us. The stories we tell determine what images fill our minds, what possibilities we believe in, what forces we set in motion. To make change, we must first envision it." In this free talk, Starhawk will draw from her visionary fiction, "The Fifth Sacred Thing" and its sequel "City of Refuge," to help listeners find vision and inspiration for these times of great change.

Starhawk is an author, activist, permaculture designer and teacher, and one of the most respected voices in modern earth-based spirituality. She is the author or coauthor of twelve books, including "The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess" and the ecotopian novel "The Fifth Sacred Thing," now in development for film and television. Her most recent non-fiction book is "The Empowerment Manual: A Guide for Collaborative Groups," on group dynamics, power, conflict and communications.

Starhawk directs Earth Activist Training, teaching permaculture design grounded in spirit and with a focus on organizing and activism. She travels internationally, lecturing and teaching on earth-based spirituality, the tools of ritual, and the skills of activism. This talk is presented in partnership by Eugene Public Library, the University of Oregon Center for the Study of Women in Society, and the University of Oregon Office of Academic Affairs. Books will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of the University of Oregon Duck Store. Free. Information:  541-682-5450 or  www.eugene-or.gov/library.

Democracy and Civic Engagement

May 3rd, 6 p.m.
Downtown Eugene Public Library at 10th & Olive in Eugene

The tools of the Internet have made it easier for one to communicate to many, but have also made it easier to invent and share misinformation. Join Andrew DeVigal for a talk about the ways in which good journalism and facts are inextricably linked to the health of democracy. He will also lead discussion of potential solutions to the timely, thorny issues of trust, civic life, and public knowledge. DeVigal is the Chair of Journalism Innovation and Civic Engagement at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication.

Recent developments in technology have wrought great changes in the communication and media industry - and, maybe more importantly, altered society. The technology that is supposed to bring people closer may also be eroding the environment democracy needs to thrive.

While hoaxes and propaganda are not new, never before has everyone been able to share opinions or broadcast real-time events globally. As a nation, the public must face these challenges with courage, integrity, innovation, and engagement.

Andrew DeVigal  is the Chair of Journalism Innovation and Civic Engagement, and the first professor of practice, at the School of Journalism and Communication and the Agora Journalism Center at the University of Oregon. DeVigal is an  Emmy-award winning journalist and was formerly multimedia editor at The New York Times. Free. Information:  541-682-5450 or  www.eugene-or.gov/library.

Bertha Holt Elementary School 2nd Annual Cultural Heritage Celebration

May 19th, 6-8:30 p.m.
Bertha Holt Elementary School at 770 Calvin Street in Eugene

Our goal is to celebrate and educate students about the various cultures that make up our school and community. Last year was a huge success - we had 40 display tables, 10 art activities, donations from various restaurants and 5 performances. It's a night to celebrate a variety of cultures at our school, community, country and from around the world!

We are currently seeking community members and student organizations to participate by hosting a booth with information that showcases their culture or to do a performance. The display could include traditional regalia, artifacts, musical instruments, food, cultural game, art activity, or a display board outlining the characteristics of their culture or a prominent figure from their country of origin (ex. artists, scientists, inventors, or musicians).

rurualcaucus

Rural Caucus and Strategy Session

June 3rd and 4th
Madras, Oregon

This is the biggest day of the year for Rural Organizing Project (ROP) - it is when the entire statewide network of rural organizers and community leaders come together to share stories and skills, build relationships and analysis, and advance plans to strengthen the movement for democracy and justice in rural and small town Oregon.

The Rural  Caucus and Strategy Session began in the early 1990s and continued as an annual tradition because it serves as a space for leaders to reflect on our work over the last year, share our lessons learned, and build collective next steps. Every Rural  Caucus and Strategy Session features think tanks on topics that reflect on our moment in time, the issues impacting rural and small town Oregon, and how to continue to build our long-term movement for justice and human dignity.

musicinthemeadow

"Music in the Meadow" with Special Guest Peter Wilde

June 11th, 12 - 6 p.m.
Madison Meadow

Once again, we will celebrate the close of yet another wonderful school year by holding our annual "un-Recital"! This annual event is an opportunity for students old and new to present anything that they would like to share, in a causal family-picnic-style setting. It is also a great way to share our accomplishments with the neighbors in the vicinity who have been exceedingly supportive with everything we do over here.

Depending on how many people wish to play, we may start and/or end an hour earlier or later, but the general time frame is from noon to 6pm, with families coming and going throughout the day. Please email us at scottypereymusic@gmail.com if you have any special time requests for performing at this event! And Jen will have a wish-list for what folks they can bring and how they can help with set-up, etc. Hope to see you all there!
