Updated Publication: Breaking the Link Between Special Health Care Needs and Financial Hardship

Just because children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) have health insurance does not necessarily mean their insurance is adequate. Just over a third of families of CYSHCN report being underinsured. Having health insurance is only part of the story when it comes to ensuring CYSHCN have access to the health care and services they need at a cost their families can afford.

We have updated Breaking the Link Between Special Health Care Needs and Financial Hardship to revisit the impact that health care financing and coverage gaps have on the lives of real families and highlight innovative policy solutions that can help states achieve improvements on National Performance Measure #15: "percent of children who are adequately insured."

Medicaid Is A Smart Investment in Children

The Georgetown University Health Policy Institute Center for Children and Families has a new brief about the importance of Medicaid for children. The authors cite research that shows that adults who received Medicaid benefits as children are healthier, have improved educational outcomes, earn more, and their families were less likely to incur medical debt.
