FROM MARY MCCLUNG QUAM
SPEAKING AND LISTENING, PART 1
So, this is it...Holy Week! Each day this week, I have been reading the passages of scripture found in our lectionary. One of the readings for Palm Sunday and again today is from Isaiah 50:4-9a. It's a passage we identify as one of the four Servant Songs found in Isaiah and although I've read it before, this week the first two verses presented themselves to me in a different way.... 4PM COMING SOON!

A Positive Witness in a Negative Climate

We all are turned off by divisive speech and name calling in politics, entertainment and Facebook. Could this be a time when God is calling the Church to offer a more uplifting witness? Bruce Reyes-Chow and Christine Hong think so.  They'll share ideas and techniques with us to change the conversation towards a more positive and inclusive one. And that is just one of the things you can learn at the 4PM Presbytery Gathering on Sunday, April 30, and Monday, May 1.

Be inspired! We will feature messages about race, One Christ being our theme at this gathering. Workshops and inspirational speakers are the highlight of the event, which also includes social time with colleagues from four presbyteries in the state of Wisconsin.

Bruce Reyes Chow is one of two featured speakers. He believes that "humanity has the capacity to engage in passionate, difficult and transformative conversations without being mean-spirited, dehumanizing or vitriolic in tone or tactic."

Dr. Christine Hong is our second featured speaker. Her teaching position with Louisville Seminary focuses on the concerns and hopes we all have for the future of the church. She dedicates her time to inter-religious cooperation and relations.

Race affects all of us. We are surrounded by racial diversity, whether displaced refugees or seasonal workers or visiting professors. We invite you to be ready for your next conversation with a person of another race. Join us in April. We look forward to seeing you.

Discovery Day is a long-running training ground for Presbyterians in southeast Wisconsin. Imagine it magnified to include the entire state and parts of Iowa, with inspiring speakers, practical workshops - and waterslides! Refreshment for body and soul awaits you the 4PM gathering in the Wisconsin Dells.

Click HERE to learn more about the event and workshops, and to register for the event, which costs $50.  If you are planning to stay on Saturday and/or Sunday night, you will need to reserve your room (which will include passes to the waterpark), through the Kalahari Resort. Call 1-877-253-5466 and mention the "4PM Gathering" to receive a reduced room rate. ( READ MORE ).
