Fair Housing Month Puts Spotlight on Housing Discrimination

Over 8,000 complaints alleging housing discrimination were submitted to HUD through its Fair Housing Assistance Program in 2016. Some 12% of those complaints were related to discrimination on the basis of having children, or "familial status discrimination." HUD allocates a portion of its $42 million Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) budget to combat this type of discrimination.


Clarity on Asian-American Homeownership

The homeownership rate of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders was 55.6 percent in 2016, possibly the first accurate data in the U.S. of this rapidly growing segment of the population. It lags behind the national homeownership rate of 63.5 percent and is significantly below the 59 percent recorded for this group in 2015.

Americans' Mortgages Are the Biggest Ever

The average size of a home loan has swelled to the biggest amount on record, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's survey, which dates back to 1990. The larger mortgage size not only reflects Americans purchasing pricier properties, but also shows they're more leveraged now too, MarketWatch reports.
