What's in this week's Box
Grown on our farm using organic farming methods:
artichokes, bok choy, baby broccoli, fava beans, strawberries, salad mix ,and potatoes .
The cucumbers are greenhouse grown in Nipomo by Ocean Breeze Farms...pesticide free.
The Mandarin oranges are grown pesticide free by Friend's Ranch in Ojai.

Cooking your artichokes....don't use your microwave when steaming your artichokes. I highly recommend the "old fashioned" way and use a steamer on the stove top with lots of water. I feel it makes for a good, moist artichoke, cook until tender. Make sure a knife goes into the heart very easily and the outer leaves should pull off very easily. If you under cook them, they will be tough and inedible...but with the right amount of cooking, the artichokes should be delicious.

This week's fava beans are young and tender...first of the season.  You can use steam them whole...using the entire pod and beans inside as you might cook up a green bean, or remove the beans from the pods and saute the bean without the outer pod.  Either way, you will find them delicious when flavored with some garlic and seasonings.  A nice dish could be made by mixing in some cut up bok choy and baby broccoli.

The "Persian" cucumbers come from Ocean Breeze Farms in Nipomo. They are grown using pesticide- free farming practices. . The "Persian" cucumber is unique among cucumbers in that it has a thin skin that doesn't require peeling and has no bitter aftertaste.
The "Sierra Gold" potatoes are great for baking, roasting, mashing or frying. No need to peel off the outer skin, just scrub off the dirt and cook with the skins left on ( much of the nutrients in a potato are in the skins!). They have a nice sweet taste and a yellow, creamy insides.
