Springdale Design Update

It may feel like this project has been in design for a long time. UDOT has been working with Springdale town, residents, business owners, utilities and other stakeholders to complete design and get ready to select a contractor. The graphic below details where we are in the process and what remains.

Plan Specifications & Engineering (PS&E) review is planned for next week. The project team will finalize the project design and contract specifications that define the limitations on the way the contractor can build the project. These specifications are extremely important and require some significant balancing to ensure that the publics' needs are considered but also that the project can be built with the time and budget we have available. We anticipate contractor bidding in June/July.

Anticipated Construction Impacts:

Project Timeframe: We understand that this project will have a large impact on the residents, businesses and tourist in Springdale and so we want to complete construction at the least impactful time. Based on a traffic study conducted by UDOT, construction is scheduled to occur from October 2017 to April 2018, during the lowest Zion National Park visitation timeframe.  While October, March and April are busy times, the only way for the contractor to complete the project in one construction season is to work through those months.

Night Work: UDOT has also determined that crews will need to work 24 hours a day to complete the project in the time allowed. This means there will be regular nighttime work through the entire duration of the project, from October 2017 to April 2018. With night work there will also likely be noise, dust, light and vibrations in the areas impacted by construction. We understand that this is an inconvenience to everyone but it is necessary to complete the project before the busy summer tourist season begins.

Impact Mitigation: T he project team is focusing on ways to mitigate impacts to traffic, businesses and residents, especially during those busier month. We'll be sharing more information about this in upcoming emails.
