With only seven weeks of school remaining, it would seem like the school year should be winding down. Instead, the next several weeks will include Relay for Life, Prom, AP Exams, Pop Show, EOC Testing, banquets, and too many other things to name. Even though this time can be extremely busy, it is very rewarding and exciting. Please take a few minutes to read the important information below to make sure you know what events are coming up.
Also, don't forget this Friday, April 14th is a school holiday for students and staff. I hope you have a great week, and enjoy the long weekend.

Lovejoy Orchestra Spirit Night: April 11
Lovejoy Orchestra will host a spirit night at Zoe's Kitchen (Fairview) on Tuesday, April 11th from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Please join the Orchestra for a great combo of delicious food, good company, and support of the Lovejoy Orchestra. 15% of the proceeds will benefit the Orchestra Booster Club. When you order, please let the cashier know you are with Lovejoy Orchestra. This includes dine in and take out.

Oxfam Hunger Banquet: April 30
An Oxfam Hunger Banquet is a memorable, interactive event which brings hunger and poverty issues to life. After 40 years, this volunteer-led effort is still going strong and has changed hundreds of thousands of lives.

WSMS Independent Studies student, Carrie Duke, is planning this hunger banquet for her 2nd semester project.
Participants will choose an income card which will depict what they will have for dinner. Depending on the income card, attendees will receive either a more nutritious and a higher quantity of food or a less nutritious meal.

Lovejoy ISD Pre-Kindergarten
Lovejoy ISD is accepting applications for tuition-based Pre-Kindergarten. This comprehensive program will be staffed by credentialed teachers and housed on the Puster Elementary School campus. This program will offer enhancements in music, fitness, art, library, science, technology, engineering, and math. We are enthusiastic to provide a Lovejoy education for community members looking for a rich learning experience which will provide a firm foundation for kindergarten and beyond.

The Summer Enrichment Camps have been finalized, and we are excited to offer opportunities for Pre-K through 12th grade. You will find everything from dodge ball to robotics, and cooking to coding.

Sewing Camp
A summer sewing camp is being offered at WSMS. Sewing Basics 101 teaches machine and tool basics while making a pillowcase and PJ's. Student Recognition
LHS Cheer
Congratulations to Emilee Gant and Carson Harrington for receiving the Tom Landry Scholarship for their outstanding leadership. Only 15 exceptional students in the metroplex were chosen for this award. They will be honored at the Tom Landry Scholarship Banquet on April 24th.
Boys Varsity Soccer
The boys' varsity soccer playoff run came to an end on Friday. The Leopards lost 2-1 to Midlothian in the Regional semifinal. Cal Cranfill scored the Leopards' goal with the assist coming from Grant Lange. While we are disappointed, the coaching staff is so proud of the boys for reaching the sweet 16! The Varsity team would like to thank everyone who came out to support them on this wonderful journey. We will be back!
Computer Science Team
The Computer Science Team took first place in the Team Programming competition at Regionals on Saturday. The team event is composed of two competitions, a written 40-question test and a 2-hour programming competition. The results of the written test, below, put the team in a solid first place going into the programming round.

5th place -- Ben Buhse
9th place -- Tommy Rousey
The programming competition consisted of a packet of 12 problems. Lovejoy solved 8 of the 12 in two hours, which combined with the written tests, placed us 1st in the team event; and when all the Regions had posted scores, Lovejoy had the highest score in the State!
Sports Medicine
The Student Athletic Trainers participated in the North Texas Athletic Training Symposium on Saturday at UT Arlington. The SATs participated in learning labs about upper extremity anatomy and injuries. They also competed in a video, taping and Quiz bowl contest.

LHS JV Track and Field
The Leopards Junior Varsity track and field team wrapped up their season at the 15-5A District Meet at Hanby Stadium in Mesquite last Wednesday.
Our JV Girls team placed 4th overall. Keep in mind, they did not have a very deep team for JV this year, since they are loading up almost every spot for the Varsity District Meet so the coach was very happy with how the girls competed with a small team. The following girls placed in the top 6 of their event to score points for the team:

For the boys' team, the distance group scored 52 of the team's 62 points.
- Freshman, Whitson Bedell led the group by winning both the 3200m (10:30.28) and the 1600m (4:51.16).
- Bedell, William Godfrey (10:37.62), and Michael O'Brien (10:44.53) each finished 1,2,3 in the 3200m.
- In the 1600m, Bedell, Chayden DuBois (4:53.98), and Godfrey (4:54.75) each earned points.
- Preston Tiff won the 800m with a time of 2:11.68.
The Leopards' other points came from the vertical jumps.
- Michael Desjardins (10' 0") and Clayton Houts (10' 0") each earned points in the Pole Vault.
- Harper Pool cleared 5' 2" in the High Jump to finish 5th.

Fantastic Fossils: April 11
Join John S. Mead -- passionate Biology Teacher, Origins Explorer, and Nature Photographer -- as he takes us through his exciting participation in Dr. Lee Berger's excavation of a new human species, Homo naledi, from the Rising Star Cave in South Africa. This species of human ancestor is believed to be 900,000 to 2 million years old and was an incredible find. The discovery of Homo naledi is featured on the October 2015 cover of National Geographic Magazine, and in a current exhibit at the Perot Museum. Mr. Mead will share stories about the discovery, as well as his outstanding photos. This event is sponsored by the Lovejoy Gifted Association (LGA). LGA members and families may attend free. All middle school and high school students may attend the event for free with a current student ID. There is a $5 admission fee for adults who are not LGA members.

Relay for Life and Beautiful Lengths
This year, at the annual Relay for Life event, on April 28th from 6-12 p.m. at the Lovejoy High School Stadium, the Relay for Life Committee will be cutting ponytails for Beautiful Lengths, an organization that partnered with the American Cancer Society, takes donated hair to create free wigs for women losing their hair due to cancer treatment. The committee is looking for selfless donors to cut their hair onstage at the event to donate to making wigs for cancer patients.
Donors may donate as little as 8 inches, but more if they please. The hair cannot be chemically treated, have more than 5% grays, or be dyed permanently. Anyone, any age may donate. If you would like to donate, please Click

Relay for Life Luminaries
The Relay for Life Committee has started selling Luminaria which is a commemorative item that will be on display during the 2017 LHS Relay for Life event and honors all those that have had cancer, those who have survived, and those who have sadly passed away. Luminaria are $10 each and can be ordered by clicking HERE and returning the order form and payment (made payable to the American Cancer Society) to the LHS School Store.
Students Leaving Campus
In the event that students need to leave campus during the school day and they drive themselves to school, we will need you to send an email to

. Please include the student's name, the time they need to leave, the reason, and a phone number to be used to contact you. Once we have received the email, we will call you for verification, and the email will provide us with the needed documentation for our records.
Parking for Daytime Events
This is a reminder that we have changed our parking policy in regards to campus events that are scheduled during school hours. Due to the increase in the number of student-assigned parking spots in the back parking lot, we ask that parents park in the front, and we will have a sign-in table just inside the cafeteria.
PowerSchool Parent Authorizations
The Parent Portal is now open for you to complete the online Enrollment & Student Information Forms. Please take a few minutes to update your contact information, emergency contacts, authorized pickup, FERPA, SCOC, Student Handbook, etc.
