Principal's message:
This week we take the time to thank our Assistant Principals for all the work they do. As Principal, I am in an advantageous position to see everything that they do, working each day with all of them. As the school leader, they do their best to fulfill my directives and directions for the school. Let me tell you a little about them, so you can see why I hold them in such high esteem.
In schools, Assistant Principals do the heavy lifting. It has been thus since schools began! Assistant Principals are responsible for managing student behavior and culture, working closely with teachers on curriculum and instruction, and taking the lead on the many projects that the Principal tasks them with. We have very high expectations for our students and keep working to find ways to make these real for them. Without a doubt, there is much that my Assistant Principals do that you just don't hear about. Deal is a very busy place and we love the work that we do.
Keep in mind that each grade-level Assistant Principal at Deal works with at least 470 students (470 in 7th and 8th grades, 540 in 6th grade). This is more than the entire population of any other middle school in DCPS. For the last few years we have had five Assistant Principals to manage the work - three manage grade levels, one manages IB and professional development, and one manages special education. This year we have had the unfortunate situation of two of our Assistant Principals out on extended leave. This means we have the same amount of work to do, but only three people to do it. Thankfully, I have three of the most committed and hardworking Assistant Principals in DCPS to take care of all that we have to do.
Diedre Neal, 6th grade Assistant Principal, was just recognized as a Highly Effective Leader with a Rubinstein Award. She has served in many positions in her career as an educator - teacher, program coordinator, assistant principal, and principal. As the heart and brains behind the creation of Deal's 6th grade program, she has overseen our youngest Vikings for eight years. She is expert at building culture, creating a loving environment, and keeping it fun. Ms. Neal also manages our math programs and our music and art programs. Her focus has always been on her students - and it shows.
Alieze Stallworth, 7th grade Assistant Principal, has been a long-time partner with DCPS - as a parent, community advocate, teacher, Principal coach, and now Assistant Principal. She started at Deal first as leader of our IB program, but transitioned several years ago to grade-level leader. In that position, she works closely with families and students, relying on her experience and skill to build consensus and community. She has led our efforts to bring in restorative justice practices and to participate in DCPS' school climate initiative. Ms. Stallworth also leads our World Languages and PE teams of teachers.
Mr. Rottman, 8th grade Assistant Principal, brings drive and energy to our school. Starting in elementary school, he has worked across the city, most recently at Jefferson MS. Mr. Rottman manages our students right before the leave for schools across the city - working with counselors and teachers on recommendations, managing the World Language trip process, organizing promotional activities, and basically making sure our Vikings are ready for high school. He also leads our English, Reading, and Second-Language Learner programs.
Our two other Assistant Principals, Katherine Giron and Dr. Paris Gasque, lead our IB and Special Education programs, respectively. Ms. Giron successfully led our testing process for the last two years, and oversee the school's science program. Dr. Gasque, new to Deal this year, has been focused on updating our special education program and working closely with families of students with disabilities.
I deeply appreciate the work of our Assistant Principals. Their consistency, skill, and longevity at Deal have kept us where our school needs to be to serve our students and our community.

Parent Volunteers are Still Needed!

We're still looking for Parent Volunteers for particular jobs for the production.
Students are still in early rehearsals, but once we get into production and performance mode, we will need lots of help! Here are some larger jobs that we'd like to fill before things heat up:
- Program ad designer - someone with graphic design skills to format and create "well-wisher" ads for the playbill
- Hair stylists - two people willing to coordinate and liaison with the costume designer, plus others to help at performances
- Make-up artists - pair with our co-coordinator to organize supplies and volunteers
- DVD - someone to coordinate the videography, reproduction, and delivery
How to be a Parent Sponsor
Don't have time to volunteer but want to help out? Monetary donations help us purchase supplies such as scenery, costumes, make-up, and the cast party, as well as compensate the professionals who work hard to direct and design the musical. Any amount you can give is welcome and appreciated.

Have you lost something during the school day? Check out the lost and found section of the website (
http://alicedeal.org/lost-found/) for photos of items found in common areas at Deal, including in the cafeteria, field, and gallery. Lost items will be kept for approximately two weeks before they are donated. To claim an item, please ask a staff member in the cafeteria to guide you to the lost-and-found.
We make an effort to identify labeled items and make announcements for students to pick these up in the Welcome Center. Please help us by putting your full name on all lunch boxes, back-packs, and other items you bring to school on a regular basis.
Don't see what you've lost? Most classrooms have individual lost-and-found areas. Consider checking in with your teachers. You can also stop by the lost-and- found in the cafeteria as not all items may be pictured.

DCPS Attendance Protocol and Policy: Things to Remember
Important: please provide a note for any absence as soon as possible (day of or soon after) to alicedealattendance@gmail.com. The note can be emailed to or brought to the attendance office next to the school entrance. Or you can complete the attach attendance link to excuse absences. It is also suggested that you email your child's teachers so that they can plan accordingly.
Students must submit a note from their parents to be excused from being absent from school. DCPS' list of reasons an absence can be excused are limited to:
- Death in the family
- Illness (doctor's note must be provided for absences that exceed 5 days)
- Medical appointment
- Emergency
- Religious holiday
- Court summons
- School activities (DCPS sponsored sports events, academic activities etc.)
- School visit (tours, interviews, etc.)

Our final literature-to-film screening will be on Tuesday and Wednesday after school, when we show
The Queen of Katwe. Based on the non-fiction book by Tim Crothers, this film depicts how Phiona Mutesi becomes a chess champion while growing up in a slum in Uganda.
New: Bon-Voyage, World Travelers!
This spring break, almost 200 8th grade students (and a handful of 7th graders) will travel to Costa Rica, France, China, and Guatemala as part of their study of Spanish, French, and Mandarin. This life-changing experience is made possible by the tireless work of our teacher chaperones and trip leaders: Ms. Cuffee, Mr. Mbayu, Mr. Zhi, and Ms. Diaz. Additionally, Deal provided $48,000 in scholarships with the help of our
awesome ADCA, DCPS, and EF Tours. Thank you! Wish these world travelers well and be sure to follow the fun over spring break with our exciting, picture-filled

Parent School Climate Survey
The National Institute of Justice and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) are conducting a study of school climate. The purpose of the study is to assist schools in the implementation of programs to enhance and improve school culture and climate. We are asking members of the Deal community to participate in the process by completing an online survey.

Middle School Writing Competition
The 29th "Celebration of Youth" essay contest is open to all DCPS students in grades 4 to 9. The theme this year is about a situation in the student's own life that the student wants to be different; the student is asked to select and take a small action on a consistent basis to make the situation better for him/her self. Essays are due by 6:00 pm on May 1st. Cash Awards will be given to 60+ students across the city. This opportunity is sponsored by Global Harmony Through Personal Excellence, a local nonprofit in Washington, DC. DCPS Summer Learning 2017
Summer Learning 2017 is open to all current Kindergarten through 8th grade students (rising 1st through 9th grade students) and takes place from June 26th - July 28th. Students at Deal will attend Brightwood EC for Summer Learning. Registration for Summer Learning is open online. National Junior Honor Society
The National Junior Honors Society (NJHS) is an opportunity for middle school students to be recognized for their excellence in scholarship, service to community, and character. To participate, students must be in the 7th or 8th grade and meet the following criteria to be eligible for induction into the Deal Chapter of NJHS:
-Maintain A's or B's in all classes through the 3rd Advisory
-Complete 10 hours of community service
-Participation in a school club or activity
Evidence of these requirements will be submitted with a National Junior Honor Society Application after the 3rd Advisory on April 28th. Applications will be shared with all eligible students in March. If you have any questions about NJHS Eligibility, please reach out to Mark LaLonde (

Peer Mediation
Peer mediation is a process of conflict resolution in which trained student mediator assists disputants to discuss and resolve their conflict. Mediation is available at Deal for student disputes on a referral basis. If students have a conflict or want to let someone know about a potential conflict situation, there are two ways to refer the issue:
1. Any student or adult may fill out the blue Mediation Referral form found in Ms. White's mailbox in the Welcome Center and in each of the grade level counselor offices.
2. Students may also talk to a trusted adult who will refer the matter to one of the grade level counselors.
It is important to note that mediation referrals can be submitted anonymously. This means that those referring others for mediation can do so without putting their name on the form.
Deal Gives Back
Deal Gives Back is our annual community service
day in which all Deal students and teachers serve our local community. Deal is looking for new activities and ideas for this year's sixth grade students. Random Acts of Kindness
Next week we will continue our Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Initiative. As the weather warms, we would like to ask kids to pay attention to the kindness around them everyday. During the month of April, we are asking sixth grade students and teachers to give a shout-out to anyone who has done something randomly kind for them. The names of the students who receive the shout-out will appear on stars on the wall above their team's main locker location. Each sixth grade teacher will be given a stack of shout-out sheets for students or teachers to write briefly about their RAK encounter.
HOMEgirls Homework Club
Does your daughter, niece, or granddaughter need help catching up on past assignments? Does she have an NTI or two in Edline? Or, is she in need of a quiet, supportive place to complete the day's homework assignments? If so, the HOMEgirls Homework Club is the place for her! Girls will work on current and missing assignments, and receive organizational strategies and study tips! HOMEgirls will meet in Room C116 every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 - 4:30 pm.

8th Grade Corner
Attention 8th grade parents! It's time to start thinking about the ever-popular 8th grade promotion dance and we need your help to make it a success! Parent volunteers are needed at the following times on June 12th:
Set-up: 12:45 - 6:00 pm
Chaperone: 7:00 - 10:00 pm
Clean-up: 9:00pm until the end of the dance.

This year's promotion will take place at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium on Tuesday, June 13th at 10:00 am. Due to space constraints, each student will be given two guest tickets. More information about payment, tickets, and logistics will be shared in a letter and the "8th Grade Corner" in the coming weeks. We look forward to sharing this special time with our biggest, wisest Vikings!

Community Project Updates
What happened this week?
This week, students reflected on their progress thus far and graded themselves on the Approaches to Learning: Communication, Social, Self-Management, Research, and Thinking. Students also learned what will be expected from their presentations and watched a sample presentation.
What's next?
Students should implement their Community Project during the month of April and take notes in their Process Journal #4, which is available on Edline.
What's needed?
If you haven't already discussed what activity your student will be completing, now's the time to ask! Students continue to need guidance for their projects, so please assist them with making phone calls to the organizations or people they would like to serve.

New: Wilson HS Course Selection
Wilson High School will visited Deal this week and all homerooms received a visit from the 8th grade counselors to begin their course selection! All students (even those who do not plan to attend Wilson) made their preliminary course selections and should bring a letter home for parents to review. These letters should be signed by a parent and returned to homeroom teachers this week. Please contact Ms. Humphrey or Ms. Travers with questions.

As with any school year, all 8th grade students who plan to attend Wilson HS should register their student at Wilson. Registration hours:

Community Project
With every 8th grade student completing a Community Project this year, there will be many requests for donations of supplies, toiletries, food, sporting goods, and various other items. Thank you for your support of our young community leaders as they find ways to improve the world around them! Here are some of the ways students hope to help others:

8th grade students Emily and Lily are partnering with Leveling the Playing Field to run a used sporting equipment collection drive at Deal. LPF relies on used/excess sports donations from local communities to engage underprivileged children in the DMV. Clean out your garages and clear the yard of used sporting equipment so that kids who are less fortunate are able to enjoy them! See the list of accepted equipment and drop off your equipment in the LPF bin in front of the Welcome Center. The collection will run during the month of April

Mental Health Awareness Day

Summer Opportunity for Community Service and Leadership Growth
Spark the Wave is an organization that encourages young people to become leaders within their communities. Wave Week is a Service Leadership Institute for youth which takes place in the summer. Wave Week offers an intensive program of leadership development, community service, team building activities and fun. During this week, participants will plan their own community service projects and gain the leadership skills necessary to implement these projects. Both residential and commuter options are available at Georgetown University and at Villanova University. This summer program is open to students in grades 6-11. Opportunities for Tweens and Teens at the Camp @ Cleveland Park
The Camp @ Cleveland Park Club offers weekly sessions from June 19 to August 11 for campers ages 4.5-10, counselors-in-training ages 11-12, and counselors ages 13+. Fun and educational projects vary with weekly themes and a portion of each day includes free swim in the Club's outdoor pool. Counselors-in-training (CIT's) experience the fun of summer camp while also taking on new responsibilities. CIT's are mentored by teenage counselors and adult staff, learning team cooperation, responsibility and motivation. For young teens, counselor positions are available week-to-week and entail more training and responsibility.
Summer Youth Sailing with DC Sail
DC Sail offers youth racing programs in the spring and fall for high school and middle school students from the DC area. Students do not need prior sailing experience to participate as learning is part of the fun! Scholarships are available for families with a demonstrated need.

Kids Elite Sports Summer Camp
It's that time again to be thinking about camp even though the weather is freezing! Kids Elite Sports Summer Camp is a multi-style camp that takes place at Wilson High School. The camp was created by Wilson Track Coach, Desmond Dunham, who is a warm, friendly, thoughtful educator who gets kids and knows how to engage and motivate them. A total of 8, 1 week sessions are offered starting June 19th and ending August 11th. More information can be found at
