COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE BRINGS AN ADDITIONAL
91 STUDENTS TO SUSSEX
Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge continued with University of Delaware, Gustavus Adolphus College, Catholic University and Delaware State University.

Gustavus won the "prize" for the longest trek to Sussex County, traveling nearly 1,300 miles and 28 hours from St. Peter, Minnesota to volunteer. Once in Sussex County, the 22 students spent the week working in Ellendale, split between sites. Some students learned to install siding and flooring, while others painted.

While Gustavus worked in Ellendale, the University of Delaware students demoed the inside of a home on Oak Street in Laurel. After ripping up the flooring and subflooring students shoveled buckets of dirt from below the floor to allow room for new plumbing to be installed.

Catholic University of Washington D.C. opt to do their
Collegiate Challenge a little different, instead of coming
during one week, the group of 25 students serve three weekends throughout the year. This particular weekend the   students were able to continue the work in Laurel.

Delaware State University was celebrating their annual day of service on Saturday, April 1st. Each year students go out
into the community for the day and serve. This was the first year that DSU served with SCHFH. Ten students served out on a build site in Ellendale. Twenty additional DSU students spent their day of service helping to rehab and reorganize the Georgetown ReStore.

Thank you to all the students who have volunteered with SCHFH this Collegiate Challenge. No matter how far you traveled, we appreciate you.

AMERICORPS PREP FOR LIFE AFTER SERVICE

March 30th AmeriCorps Members serving with organizations across the state of Delaware gathered at Delaware State University for the annual Life After AmeriCorps Conference. The conference is a way for AmeriCorps to network and gain skills necessary for their next path.

This year's conference included breakout sessions aimed at those interested in entering the workforce and those wanting to continue service. Speakers included Ashley Biden,Executive Director at Delaware Center for Justice, and founder of LiveliHOOD; Shawn F. Stevens, Ed. D., Principal Consultant, at P-Impact; and former Sussex County Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps member, Lyndsay Humphreys now a Volunteer Coordinator for the Food Bank of Delaware.

In between sessions, attendees had the opportunity to explore an Opportunity Fair. Ten organizations were in attendance representing different post-AmeriCorps opportunities. Widener University represented continuing education and the PeaceCorps represented continuing service.  The Delaware State Police were recruiting, and other organizations like Stand by Me were hiring.

The Life After AmeriCorps Conference is one of the many trainings offered to AmeriCorps members throughout their service. During the course of a service term a member receives trainings covering a broad range of subjects including, safety, leadership, disaster assistance, volunteer management, and many site specific trainings.

The AmeriCorps program also promotes networking, and career strategy growth. Program directors and state officials help to align members with opportunities to be grasped upon completion of their service. The Life After AmeriCorps Conference is an opportunity to bring all aspects of the post-AmeriCorps experience together.

SEAFORD, ROCKS THE BLOCK WITH SCHFH!

On Saturday, April 8th, Sussex County Habitat for Humanity organized the second area Rock the Block in Seaford, Delaware. Inspired by similar Habitat events nationally, the Seaford Rock the  Block was a neighborhood revitalization initiative where 70 local volunteers,  AmeriCorps Delaware  members, Habitat staff, and homeowners spruced up properties and repaired homes. By collaborating with engaged citizens, Sussex County Habitat expands on services typically offered to owner-occupied homes.

Community Volunteers gathered at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church for the traditional Habitat Blessing, and to meet with their groups for the day. Breakfast was served to volunteers thanks to Mt. Olivet volunteers.

The group consisted of volunteers from Mt. Olivet, the Greater Seaford Chamber of Commerce, Seaford City Hall, Seaford City Council, and many local volunteers. Mayor David Genshaw spoke to the volunteers thanking everyone for helping to "Rock the Block" in his city, before heading to a site to volunteer himself. Additional support for the day was offered thanks to Nanticoke Senior Center , food for a celebration after the event was donated by WAWA , and music was performed by members of the 15 String Band.

Volunteers spent the day helping to revitalize Seaford area homes. During the event six area owner-occupied homes, and four non-profit  buildings were worked on. Tasks included landscaping, painting, trash pick-up, gutter cleaning, power washing, and more.
