Rest
"The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.  And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.”  For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.  And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.”  Mark 6:30-32

No one who has walked this earth ever took his work more seriously than Jesus.  He knew the future of humanity depended on Him carrying out God’s plan to redeem a fallen world.  Failure was not an option and the enormous weight of this responsibility was surely crushing.  Being both fully God and fully man, Jesus knew the importance of rest as a means of restoring both body and spirit.  Countless times throughout scripture we find examples of Jesus removing Himself to a quiet place to rest and pray while encouraging those closest to Him to do the same.

Jesus’ advice to His disciples to “come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest” is just as valid for us today and it was for them over 2,000 years ago.  Whether you are planning a Spring break far away or enjoying a “staycation”, I pray you will feel the peace of God restoring you in body, mind, and spirit.  Speaking only for myself, I could surely use some restoration.  When we return, we’ll have roughly six short weeks of school remaining and it will be packed with activity.  Rest up, my friends.  We have a race to finish and I intend for us all to finish it well.

Blessings,

Jim R. Callis
Head of School

Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Musical Presentation by Mrs. Freeman
Our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students had a special music presentation given  on Wednesday  by our Latin teacher, Mrs. Freeman.  She shared music on her flute, piccolo and clarinet.  The students listened to pieces from Peter and the Wolf and also heard part of John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever”.
First and Second Grade
Miss Georgia
This month is “National Reading Month”, and we had a very special guest come read to our first and second grade classes….Miss Georgia!  Patricia Ford visited with us on Friday, March 24, and read books to our students in the library.  She also  shared her faith, told the students a little bit about what she does and answered questions.  This was a  great, fun opportunity for our students to meet a “famous personality”!   Many thanks to Diane Boswell for helping to coordinate her visit.
Third Grade
Treasure Hunt Fun
On March 24, 3rd grade enjoyed their annual treasure hunt.  They received partners, read Biblical clues on iPads using QR codes and figured out the answers to get them to the next station.  At each station, they did map activities to tie in with their Geography unit.  Once they finished their final station activity, they received a clue to find the "Promised Land" (where they found their treasure)!  It was an exciting day for everyone. Thank you to all the parents that helped make it fun!
Fourth Grade
“The King’s Skittles”
Students in Mrs. Smallwood’s social studies classes have been studying the events that led to the Revolutionary War.  One of the interactive lessons they did was called “The King’s Skittles”! The King and his Parliament members announced taxes such as a tax on uniform shirts, chairs and pencils.  The tax collectors then claimed the taxes from the colonists.  It wasn’t long before the colonists were feeling angry and saying, “No taxation without representation!”
Upper School
Tour of Univisión 34
Upper School Spanish IV Honors students traveled with Mrs. Horner and Mrs. Robertson to Buckhead March 28, to tour the local Spanish news station, Univisión 34.  News journalist, Mariela Romero, gave them a warm welcome and explained the news business to the students.  It was an entire day of Spanish for the students, culminating with each junior reading the news from the teleprompters at the anchor desk!  After their amazing tour, they enjoyed a Spanish lunch of tapas and paella at Eclipse di Luna. ¡Fue un día fenomenal!

Archery
The Upper School and Middle School archery teams traveled to Georgia Southern on Saturday, March 25 for their State Meet.  Between both teams there were 13 shooters representing Mt. Bethel.  Thomas Sharpless took 5th place for the Middle School boys with a score of 260 out of a possible 300.  This medal is the first for either archery team at Mt. Bethel at the State level of competition.  Please congratulate him when you see him.

Baseball
The varsity baseball team was in action on March 24 against Whitefield Academy.  Whitefield defeated the Eagles the last time we played, and the Eagles were out for revenge.  It was a battle that went back and forth, but the Eagles came away with a great win defeating Whitefield 7-6.

They were also in action against region opponent Community Christian on March 28.  The game was an intense battle from start to finish!  In the 4th inning, the Eagles took the lead by scoring 2 runs, but they gave up 2 in the bottom of the 4th so the score remained tied.  The score remained tied through the 7th inning; that meant free baseball for the spectators.  After 9 innings, the score was still tied.  In the 10th, the umpires implemented international rules, which means that a runner starts on 2nd and no outs.  The Eagles battled, but fell just short losing in the 10th inning 3-2.
Soccer
JV girls’ soccer had their first outing as a team on Friday, March 24 at 3:30 at the Main Campus winning 10-0 against Johnson Ferry!  The girls came out strong to start the game with the first ever high school soccer goal scored by freshman, Lauren Schwartz, assisted by Madison Contrucci, an 8th grader!  Quickly following the first goal, Madison Contrucci added two more goals for Mt. Bethel, assisted by Sarah Lang and Addison Seaborn, both 8th graders.  Summer Smith added a goal for Mt. Bethel, assisted by Madison Contrucci.  Sarah Lang added a goal, assisted by Addison Seaborn.  In total, Lauren Schwartz scored 2 goals, Madison Contrucci scored 5 goals, Summer Smith, Sarah Lang, and Addison Seaborn all added a goal as well.

Tennis
The varsity tennis team was in action on Friday, March 24 against Cornerstone Prep.  It was a back and forth match that came down to the end with a 3-2 victory.  Wins came from the doubles team of Melis Akkan & Hannah Chang, Allie McCray and the doubles team of Briley Holder & Caroline York.  They were scheduled to play again on Tuesday, but Cumberland Christian ended up having to forfeit the match due to not having enough players.  They were again in action on Wednesday, March 29 against Johnson Ferry. They battled, but in the end we came up short, losing 0-4.
Middle School
Baseball
Baseball took the field against Mount Vernon on March 29.  They were clicking on offense and defense well enough to collect a 6 - 2 victory.

Baseball was up against St. Martins in a game that saw 24 total runs.  Unfortunately, they had 16 of them to our 8, but the boys still played well as a team according to our coaches.  A good loss.

Golf
Golf played at the Hooch in Duluth along with Perimeter Christian on March 28.  They did not grab the low round as a team, but John Ostergard did tie for low round individual with a 36.

Soccer
Soccer had a Cherokee Christian playdate with the ladies at home and the boys on the road on March 27. Two victories were collected by the teams.  It was a 4 - 0 shut out from the girls and a 5 - 1 finish for the boys.  Goals for the girls came from Anne Allen Floyd, Caitlin Foster, Libby Michael and Mayah Bourne.  Goals from the boys came from Edward Rendle (2) and Andrew O’Connor (3).

Soccer had Pinecrest on the schedule for a second time this season on March 30.  The ladies were on the road, and came away with a 2 - 0 victory.  Goals came from The Faklaris sisters, Lexy and Hannah.  The boys were at home.  They jumped up one goal early, but could not answer the three that came from Pinecrest by the end of the game.

Tennis
Tennis played host to the “Lower Roswell Rival”, Eastside Christian, on the US courts on March 27.  The boys fell just short on the lines 2 - 3, while the ladies’ matches led to a 5 - 0 victory.

On March 28, tennis traveled to Blackburn Park for a limited squad match with St. Martins.  Both teams played well but fell short of the win.  Boys lost 0 – 2 and girls lost 0 – 4.
