The Klamath Basin Tribal Food Security Project has its roots in partnerships, and strong relationships between our partners on the river (and off) are one key to our success. Last month, we had the chance to share some of our Food Security Project experiences with Cooperative Extension staff from around the state who hope to support local Tribes' priorities for food security/food sovereignty, ecosystem restoration and cultural revitalization.
Meanwhile on the river, the Karuk Tribe and Mid Klamath Watershed Council are working together on the Karuk Tribe's Spring Gathering and Family Support Series in Orleans. The Klamath Tribes are planting trees grafted and gifted by the Karuk Tribe and MKWC. Yurok youth have strawberry starts from Butler Flat for the planter boxes they just built in Weitchpec, and if you don't have a rototiller, the Karuk Food Security Crew can help you out!

Sharing Collective Learning for
New Collaborative Partnerships
The University of California's Agriculture and Natural Resources Division is home to California's statewide county agricultural extension system, known as University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE).
In a recent statewide survey of UCCE staff, over 100 people reported that there are Tribes in their communities that might benefit from Extension, but only a third of these currently receive Extension services. In response, Jennifer Sowerwine, Janice Alexander, and Deborah Giraud recently offered a 2-day workshop to UCCE staff interested in supporting local Tribes. The gathering, Creating Successful Partnerships with Native American Tribes brought Tribal representatives, staff and academics to share strategies to help break down some of the barriers to working collaboratively with tribal communities.

April is full of special events, starting off next week with a Sipnuuk Digital Library Workshop and Traditional Pit Oven series leading up to a fun-filled Spring Gathering! Details below. You are also invited to our continuing Food Security programs Monday - Thursday in Orleans, CA and Happy Camp, CA. All programs weather dependent. Take a look and mark your calendar now! SPECIAL EVENTS - all are welcome!
Sudden Oak Death Talks - How can our community protect our tanoaks? Thurs 4/6, 4-5 pm, KDNR, Orleans, CA. Weds 4/12, 4:30 - 6pm, Old Gym, Happy Camp, CA.
Sipnuuk Workshops - Learn to navigate the Tribe's Digital Library, Archives and Museum. 5 - 6:30 pm, Tues 4/4 at Orleans Computer Center, Wed 4/5 at Yreka Education Center, and Thurs 4/6 at Happy Camp Computer Center.
SPRING GATHERING - Bring your family to our full day of fun! Bike rodeo, clothes swap, traditional acorn preparation, hide tanning workshop, resource fair, and much more! Sat 4/8, 11am-3pm, KDNR, Orleans CA.
Family Support Series - learn about the WIC program, make traditional salves, eat delicious and traditional food! Tues 4/18, Weds 4/19, Thurs 4/21, Sat 4/21. See flyer for times and details.

Klamath Tribes
Spring is finally reaching the headwaters, we have 300 seed starts ready to go, and we're out in the Chiloquin garden! We'll be there as long as the weather is good - please meet us there to lend a hand.
The Karuk Tribe has given us 10 fruit trees. Stay tuned for a tree planting day! For info, call Perri McDaniel, perrimcdaniel@klm.portland.ihs.gov or 541-882-1487 x 235.
Our final Community Greenhouse will be sited at Hilyard Elder Housing in Klamath Falls. We'll be building raised beds nearby starting soon. To help build a garden for our elders, call Perri.
Mid Klamath Watershed Council
Chicken Tractor from Scratch - MKWC's 6-week Chicken Tractor Workshop series continues this month, Sat 4/8, Thurs 4/13 and Sat 4/29, 10am - 3pm.
