April Meeting Extras

Postcard Exchange - three things!

First, it's time to start thinking about the annual Summer Postcard Exchange! The way it works is you send three (or more) postcards over the summer to your Secret Postcard Pal. In turn you will be the Secret Postcard Pal of another person and receive postcards from her or him. At the end of the summer send a "reveal" postcard to reveal (or provide a clue to) your identity. We'll display the cards we received at the September meeting - and hopefully connect with our Secret Postcard Pals.

Second, NEW THIS YEAR - bring the postcards you received last summer to the April meeting - everybody wants to see them again (including your Secret Postcard Pal), and they'll inspire people who have been tempted to participate but haven't tried it yet.

Third, sign-up slips will be available at the April meeting, or you may email me your name, snail-mail address, email address, and phone. Send that information to [email protected]  At the May meeting I'll have each of your "assignments." If you don't pick it up at the May meeting I'll email you your information.

PLEASE sign up ONLY if you intend to participate, so nobody is disappointed. If you have participated in the past, you know how much  fun this is. If you have not, plan to do so this summer!

Sue Agnew
Dash up to the front of the room and pick up your copy of the March 2017 PaperWorks Journal. PS: To help keep postage costs down, members can pick up a copy for a friend who is absent.

Two Creative Circles meet after the program

A Stitch in Time:  Bring your stitching, collage and felting projects and join the fun! Dianna and Laura will welcome you.

New Bookmaking: New members and guests are welcomed. We will be making a new book each month.  We will have extra paper and supplies for drop in guests.   Contact:  Carol at [email protected]

Each month, the Murphey Gallery is reserved until 3 pm for PaperWorks members.  Stay after the program, and have fun meeting up with other creative friends!

Weaving With Cardboard Supports
with Mary Ellen Palmeri
Sat., May 6, 9am - 4pm (one hour lunch break)
cost: $65  materials fee: $8
Using simple cardboard learn how to weave "off-loom" projects.  A materials fee of $8 will provide everything necessary for two fun
projects, a mini tapestry-sampler and a woven bag.  Handouts will provide guidance for methods and techniques.

A tapestry-sampler is used to learn basic and fancy weaving techniques and to experiment with color and texture.  You can hang up the finished project using a dowel stick or a yarn loop.

The second project uses a unique way of applying warp cords to the cardboard support so that a "pocket" can be woven in one piece, without having to stitch pieces together.  The result is a small woven bag that is just right for carrying a phone or a pocket camera.  Also learn how to make a traditional rope strap to use as a shoulder or hand strap for your bag.

These projects can be adorned with beads, pom poms and other embellishments.

Bobbie's Notes

No fooling, it's already April!  And it's been another crazy, creative month for PaperWorks members! Between all of our amazing speakers, workshops, PaperPlay classes, Creative Circles, art exhibits, enews, webpage, Journal, and outings.......there is always something for everyone to enjoy, learn, and make connections.  Please do invite a friend to our general meetings, which are always open to the public, and introduce them to our hidden gem of an arts organization.

All of the programs that we sponsor do not just happen.  Much behind the scenes work and planning makes it all possible, and we need you to help
out! PaperWorks needs a few good people to fill these positions for 2017-18:  Creative Circles Chair and Secretary.  We are also considering having a "Show & Sell" for PW members, updated to run in conjunction with the Tucson October/November Art Walk weekends, but we need a team to run it.  You'll work with a great group of people that get things done and set the vision and tone for our great organization.   Please talk to me or any other board member if you think you could serve.  We are a friendly bunch!

Membership News

At the present time our membership dues cover the year beginning July 1 and ending June 30.  This timeline seems to be very confusing and results in dues not being paid on time or being paid twice.  Many members are not in town after July 1 as well.  After board discussion and approval, we have decided to change our membership year to January 1 thru December 31.

To implement this change, membership dues of $50 will be paid on July 1, 2017 for July 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018.  Members will pay $50 for one and a half year's dues, and then return to $35 yearly dues on January 1, 2019.

An invoice will be sent to all current members July 1 this year for this amount and will include links to pay via Pay Pal, credit card or information to pay by check.

Mark Andersson

Hello PaperWorks friends,
I've added a few classes between now and September. You can find them at:

http://www.pantherpeakbindery.com/course-list.html

There are still places in the onset board class in April. This is a valuable binding to know, especially if you want to learn to repair books. But it also is an easier way to control the final look of your binding than making the more "normal" case binding. It's a two-day class.

I also am offering a book repair class in July.  I haven't offered this class in four or five years, and it will be a while before I offer it again.  It is, in my opinion, the best one week book repair class offered in this country.  We will repair two books using four different methods, as well as doing paper repair.

I'm also offering, for the first time, a modern long stitch binding class. This is a fun and relatively simple binding which is also quite beautiful.  We'll sew using a long stitch sewing structure over a wrapper, which will then be covered with marbled paper.  It's a great binding for those who are just starting out and one that can be done at home with little or no equipment.

Check the website in a month or so and see if there have been any additions or changes.
