Every Student Succeeds Act Is Just the Beginning
For the first time in federal education law, the role of school health and physical education has been elevated and acknowledged as part of a student's "well-rounded education."

Now that Congress has passed the Every Student Succeeds Act(ESSA), states and school districts are doing the planning and preparation needed to implement this monumental legislation beginning with the 2017-18 school year.
Join us on Capitol Hill on April 25-26 to ensure that health and physical education programs are prioritized and have access to sufficient funding as ESSA is enacted nationwide.

Register for SPEAK Out! Day today and let your voice be heard! At the event, you'll meet with your members of Congress to share the positive impact that school health and physical education have on your students.

ESSA Updates

NJAHPERD has been keeping you informed about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) through our FYI newsletter, emails and through sessions at the recent convention. We have been attending stakeholder's meetings and voicing our concerns of the importance of health and physical education. Now it is your turn! Your voice needs to be heard so that our students receive the programs they deserve!

You need to start the discussion NOW with your administrator to ensure the your Health & Physical Education program receives funding, along with the other "well rounded education" disciplines.

School district and school administrators will make the decisions about how ESSA funding is allocated within districts and schools, and which programs are ultimately funded. They must be a key advocacy audience. Since health and physical education are NEW to the list of subjects for which funding can be used, it's likely that they will NOT receive funding at the school district and school-level unless YOU are a strong advocate.

Make time to meet with your principal and ask to be a member of your district's ESSA Committee.

Some discussion points:
·          All ESSA funding must support academic achievement for students. Remind administrators about the link between health, physical education, physical activity and academic achievement, behavior in the classroom, discipline referrals, etc.
·          Share any personal stories about how health and physical education has positively impacted students in your school.
·          Come to the meeting with a specific funding request including an estimated dollar amount for a specific curriculum, equipment, professional development event, training, etc.

If you have any questions or need more information, visit the website or contact the NJAHPERD office.

Become a Healthy U School & Receive Partner School Benefits (value: $6500)

The New Jersey State Alliance, along with The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, is in the planning process to select the next cohort of schools to participate in the Healthy U program for the 2017-18 school year. Since 2012, the school-based Healthy U program has impacted 38,000 children in 70 New Jersey schools. Healthy U is based on the CATCH curriculum; research shows that students will be healthier and perform better in school because of the program.   To implement Healthy U, the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance partners a local YMCA with their local elementary schools to develop and implement a coordinated School Health Plan.
School selection for the 2017-2018 school year begins now. 10 new schools will be selected. If your school is interested in being a part of the program, contact Sue Cornell, Healthy U Director at [email protected] to learn about the programs resources and benefits. More details

Motor Skill Assessment Programe
The Motor Skill Assessment Program (MSAP) has been developed at the University of Virginia to train physical educators how to observe and evaluate the motor skill performance of children. As an experienced physical educator, you know that being able to quickly and accurate assess motor skills is an important part of being an effective teacher. MSAP is designed to improve the assessment competency of teachers and involves two steps: 1) learning the key components of the skill while developing a visual image of the correct performance of each component; and 2) self-paced guided practice observing students, making judgments regarding their performance, and then receiving immediate feedback on the accuracy of your performance. We invite you to participate in a short study where you use MSAP and then evaluate it. The study will require a total of 3 hours of your time, which can be distributed over 2 weeks (giving you the flexibility to log in and out of the program as many times as needed to complete your evaluation). At the completion of the study, each participant will also receive an official certificate documenting 3 hours of professional development that can used towards satisfying your local continuing education requirements.
For more information and to sign up to evaluate MSAP, contact Wes Wilson

Updating the Traditional Obstacle Course
This article by Michael Choinacky appeared in Edutopia recently. A middle school health and physical educator, Mr. Choinacky writes about student interest, engagement, and excitement: "The popularity of obstacle course races such as the Tough Mudder and Spartan Races and the TV show American Ninja Warrior has produced an interest in kids to move in new ways."  MORE
When pink slips fly, they usually land in the hands of arts, music and physical education teachers first, which is what's happening in districts around the country. If PE is cut, the burden of exercise instruction will be passed on to classroom teachers while eliminating their planning time.   MORE
From after-school sports to your child's daycare playground, artificial grass has quickly become the preferred material surface for schools, sports fields and recreational parks because it is low-maintenance and cost-efficient. While there may be huge monetary savings to be found in using artificial turf over real grass, one major component used to create the fields and playgrounds has some worried about the health hazards for children who spend a great deal of time on the playing surface. Do Healthy Lunches Improve Student Test Scores?
For more than a decade, standardized-test scores have been the dominant metric for measuring what public-school students know and are able to do. No Child Left Behind, the sweeping federal education law enacted in 2002, ushered in a new era of student testing and school compliance. And in the years that followed-to meet targets and avoid sanctions-education leaders at the local and state levels have sought a variety of ways to boost students' performance on tests, including extending the school day and giving bonus pay to teachers based on students' test scores. Even less conventional methods, such as banning cell phones and offering yoga-like exercises, emerged as school administrators pursued the holy grail of high standardized-test scores. MORE
A new presidential era means more changes are in store for education. President Donald Trump recently signed bills rolling back two regulations - one measuring school accountability under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and another measure related to teacher training. The school accountability measure overwhelmingly passed in the Republican-controlled House, but narrowly made it out of the Senate with a 50-49 vote - despite opposition from business, labor and civil rights groups, as well as Democrats.   MORE

Female soccer players suffer the most concussions in high school sports
High school girls have a significantly higher concussion rate than boys, with female soccer players suffering the most concussions, according to new research presented today at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

"While American football has been both scientifically and colloquially associated with the highest concussion rates, our study found that girls, and especially those who play soccer, may face a higher risk," said Wellington Hsu, MD, professor of orthopaedics at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and lead author of the study. "The new knowledge presented in this study can lead to policy and prevention measures to potentially halt these trends." MORE
A two-year study published in February 2016, which Omro, Wisconsin school district administrators referred to as they brought the physical equipment into classrooms, found that elementary students who had physical activity incorporated into their lessons significantly improved in their math and spelling performance. But staff in Omro said they were pleasantly surprised to see the benefits of the physical activity go beyond academics, as students' behaviors and mental health symptoms improved as well.   MORE
Active Schools
LMAS Updates

The Future Direction of Active Schools

Active Schools, an a national initiative, will not offer direct programs and services to enrolled schools because Active Schools' organizational partners do so directly.   As such, starting June 1, 2017, Active Schools will no longer provide the school improvement process that has been connected to the physical education and physical activity component of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (AHG)'s Healthy Schools Program or SHAPE America's Physical Activity Leader (PAL) Learning System.   However, AHG and SHAPE America will continue to provide these excellent resources, and Active Schools will actively promote them.

In Active Schools' role as the hub for active school environments, it will provide an enhanced website that serves as a gateway to partners' programs, training, technical assistance, research/data/fact sheets, advocacy messages and campaigns, case studies/success stories, recognition programs, and the like.   Active Schools will also continue to enroll champions for school physical education and physical activity - working to attract a broad base of champions that include parents, principals, superintendents, school board members, medical and public health professionals, etc.   Active Schools currently has over 32,000 enrolled champions.

As school physical education and physical activity experts, SHAPE America's members and affiliate state associations will continue to be critical leaders for the overall Active Schools movement and network (of partners' networks).   In the coming months, as Active Schools communicates unified messages and conducts collaborative activities, we hope that SHAPE America members and affiliates will be ready and willing to continue providing the incredible support that has been given to date.

Our nation's children deserve active school environments and active, healthy, and happy lives.  Thank you for all you do for children!
