March Edition

programProgram Update- Disaster Services
Just over a year ago, students living in the Visitation Building at Loras College awoke to the ringing of a smoke alarm and a unique situation. A lightning strike had ignited the historic building into flames. All students were evacuated safely, but many lost belongings and had nowhere to go immediately after the early morning blaze. To watch the Red Cross video about this event, click here.

The American Red Cross acted quickly. "We were given a blanket, and they kept asking if we needed anything," one student remembers. The Red Cross was able to provide financial assistance and hygiene kits to help with immediate needs during this disaster. It is because of the disaster services program that victims in the tri-states have immediate access to resources. The American Red Cross focuses on providing safe shelter, food, emotional support, emergency relief supplies, recovery assistance and basic mental health services in the community during times like these. March is also Red Cross month, learn more about how the American Red Cross is making a difference in our community here.

Campaign Update - $1,651,000 and Counting

Haven't had a chance to LIVE UNITED with a gift to United Way this year?

If you believe we work best when we work together...
If you believe there are some in our community who need a little extra support...
If you believe you have a few extra dollars to spare...

Please consider a gift to this year's campaign. Our fiscal year ends on May 31, and we anticipate funding over 30 programs, including four-six new programs! We are hoping to raise just under $50,000 before year-end and would love to count your gift among those making a difference in our community. Give online at www.dbqunitedway.org/give or text LIVEU to 71777!

grant Grant Update

A wide range of community volunteers have put in countless hours the last two months reviewing United Way funded partner program applications. Over 25 programs will be supported via the Currently Sponsored Programs funding stream in 2017/2018, and 16 new programs are being evaluated for New & Targeted Initiatives funding.  Many thanks to the 24 review panelists assisting in this important community process.  Funding announcements will be available in late April/early May.

Community Needs Assessment

Did you know...
  • One in five respondents to a survey of 511 parents in Dubuque reported they turned down a job or worked fewer hours due to lack of childcare options?
  • Interviews with 24 mental health care providers in Dubuque indicated a limited ability to meet the community's need for quality mental health services?

Sobering statistics and findings about the community's need for quality childcare and mental health services are now available through a collaborative effort of Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, United Way and numerous other organizations.  The full findings and recommendations for the future are available at  Project HOPE.  Community meetings are planned to address report recommendations.

homelessHelping Combat Homelessness

Homelessness in our community is an issue impacting all of us!  Did you know there were 271 homeless people in Dubuque during a January homeless count?  Today we are celebrating a great win for our community and the efforts to combat homelessness.  United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States, ECIA, and Opening Doors submitted and were awarded a collaborative grant through the Iowa Finance Authority for the Coordinated Entry process for our Eastern Iowa Region of Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson, and Clinton counties. The funding will allow our service region to plan, establish and operate a coordinated entry system in order to provide the best possible services to people experiencing homelessness. We will be working throughout the region to share the information of coordinated assessment, data collection options, and training opportunities and are excited to begin this work.  Look for us to connect with many of our local partners to continue to build and strengthen efforts to support homeless individuals in our community.

WomenWomen United Update
March has been a busy month for Women UNITED...
Over 825 books were distributed to children from birth to age 5 in low-income families throughout the United Way service area. Primary distribution points for the Sprout into Reading Program are Parents as Teachers programs in five counties, Crescent Community Health,  Dubuque Visiting Nurse Association, Guttenburg Hospital and the Delaware County Regional Medical Center. Free books and helpful literacy tips for parents are distributed quarterly.

Twenty-six Women UNITED volunteers participated in the March 2nd "Read Across America"  celebration.  Women UNITED volunteers read at Dubuque-area public and parochial schools.
Disaster
Natural Disaster Preparation
United Way, the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and a host of community organizations have started meeting regularly this spring to prepare for possible natural disasters.  Known as Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD),  COADs are part of a state-wide network to provide community disaster education, hazard analysis, training exercises, classes for community leadership, local emergency management plans, and the expertise of its members to bring holistic disaster awareness to its community and citizens.

The Dubuque COAD's next meeting is scheduled for Friday, April 7, at 9 a.m. at Red Cross, 2400 Asbury Road, Dubuque.  For more information, email   Chris Chapin-Tilton.

THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONS WHO CONTINUE TO LIVE UNITED THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN OUR CAMPAIGN EFFORTS!

Together, we recognize there are no quick fixes. Band-Aids are not enough. We have to look at the big picture, and how our work connects with each other. In other words, lasting solutions take a while, and all of us thank you for LIVING UNITED this year!
