Perspectives on Men's Grief and
Spirituality
|
|
"For men, grief is a low blow. It feels like an illegal hit. It attacks our iconic male 'warrior values' - control, bravado, invincibility," writes Nelson Hayashida, our Spiritual Care Counselor who will lead our Men's Grief & Spirituality group, which runs April 3-May 8. Read his reflection on his father's death and how men grieve.

On the anniversary of her son's death - which happened to be the night of the Super Moon in Fall 2016 - Patrice Handley wrote this poem while sitting under the oak tree where his ashes are buried. She participates in our "Healing Through Poetry" group. Read her poem: My Man-In-The-Moon.

The late Gail Rink, my friend and former Executive Director of Hospice of Santa Barbara used to say, "What is needed in this country is a 'paradigm shift' in our approach to facing and talking about death. She was all about 'having the conversation' and having it early and often.
It seems odd for us to ignore when we consider that death is something each of us will experience. Read more about the ways Hospice of Santa Barbara brings death safely into the open through various platforms and activities in my column recently featured in Voice Magazine.

Mentors Needed for 'I Have a Friend' Program
|
|
Hospice of Santa Barbara is seeking volunteers to make a difference in a child's life by joining the "I Have A Friend®" Mentor Program. Mentor volunteers are adults who experienced the death of a parent or sibling as a child and are trained and matched with children who have recently experienced a similar loss. Mentors help a child to heal, thrive and feel "normal" again.
Training takes place over two consecutive Saturdays.

Time: 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
