VHCF Announces
Prizes for Progress Contest

This year is the Virginia Health Care Foundation's 25th anniversary! We want to mark this important milestone by doing something special for our health safety net partners. We know how hard it is to get unrestricted funding. So, to celebrate 25 years of working with you to grow and strengthen Virginia's health care safety net, VHCF will award two current and/or former grantees unrestricted prize money ($15,000 and $10,000) just for telling us in 2 pages or less about the difference VHCF support has made for their organizations.

More information about Prizes for Progress and how to apply is available  here . Entries are due by Monday, May 15th. Contact Cat Hulburt or Andrea Lancaster with any questions at 804-828-5804.

Spotlight on Oral Health Integration - CrossOver Healthcare Ministry

CrossOver is continuously working to improve integration between its medical and oral health services. Recently, it began fast-tracking pediatric medical patients for dental services. CrossOver's medical providers communicate directly with dental staff to ensure pediatric patients receive dental services as soon as possible. This has had an immediate impact for many, including 10 year-old, Roman (name changed), who was born with a cleft palate. While he had his lip repaired as an infant, his family couldn't afford any follow-up care or treatment. After his first visit to CrossOver's medical clinic, Roman was fast-tracked to the dental clinic for assessment. The clinic's dentists were able to determine that his palate was still open and in need of additional treatment. Roman was quickly connected with a volunteer oral surgeon to provide the services he needed. Once that is complete, a volunteer orthodontist has agreed to work with Roman to correct the alignment of his teeth. Roman and his mother thought he would have to live the rest of his life dealing with his open palate. Thanks to the CrossOver's integration of medical and dental services, Roman is on track to have a brighter future.

Happy Anniversary to the Medicaid Dental Benefit for Pregnant Women!

It's no secret that oral health care during pregnancy can improve the health of mom and baby and lead to lower health care spending in the Medicaid and FAMIS programs. Make sure your staff and patients are aware of the comprehensive dental coverage for pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid and FAMIS that was made available in March of 2015. Pregnant women who are no longer minors (over 21 for Medicaid and over 19 for FAMIS) can receive routine care and preventive dental benefits under this regulation. Prior to the regulation, pregnant adults enrolled in Medicaid or FAMIS could only receive emergency extractions; the benefit now covers a more robust menu of routine and preventive services. The benefit originated as part of the Governor's  A Healthy Virginia  initiative -- a ten-part plan to increase access to health care for more than 200,000 uninsured Virginians.

Lessons learned about trauma treatment models

Health care professionals increasingly recognize the detrimental impact of trauma on patients' lives and health outcomes. Choosing the right treatment for trauma, however, can be more difficult. A recent technical assistance brief from the Center for Health Care Strategies aims to help! The brief features insights and tips for how to choose the right model for your health care setting and providers. It also shares the experiences of five complex care organizations in training staff and implementing evidence-based trauma treatment models.
