It Doesn't Have to be This Way: Intervening in High Conflict Family Dynamics

Session Excerpt:
High conflict family dynamics become a health issue for ageing persons, intensifying physical, psychological and cognitive challenges. However, until recently, there were no court connected efforts to address this issue. To respond to this critical situation, the Elder Justice Initiative on Eldercaring Coordination developed a dispute resolution process for families when conflict impacts the autonomy, care and safety of ageing persons.

This workshop will be of interest to administrators of organizational, agency and court programs; guardians and legal decision-makers, attorneys and legal programs for older people; and direct caregivers, conflict resolution providers, advocates and Councils on Ageing.

Presented by:
Sue Bronson (ACR Elder Justice Initiative on Eldercaring Coordination)
Linda Fieldstone (ACR Elder Justice Initiative on Eldercaring Coordination)
Dr Karim Yamout (Carter Psychology Centre)

Accessing Lessons from Under-Resourced Communities to Inform the Age-Friendly Movement

Session Excerpt:
Despite the exponential growth in the WHO Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities program, those in lower-income countries remain rare.  With a few exceptions, age-friendly efforts have taken place only in mid- to high-resource areas, denying this effective model to areas that stand to benefit greatly from this approach.

There is a perception that the age-friendly model requires considerable funding and human resources to implement, making it not available to low-income/high stress communities.  Grantmakers in Aging (GIA) and HelpAge in this session will present lessons that could be considered age-friendly projects in lower-resourced communities.

Presented by:
Dr John Feather (CEO, Grantmakers in Aging)
Dr Kristin Bodiford (HelpAge USA)
Dr Jennifer Campbell (Grantmakers in Aging)
Jerome Sam-De Maya (HelpAge International)

Structural and Societal of Elderly Persons in Chile: Formulation Multidimensional Index

Session  Excerpt:
The central hypothesis of this session is that the legal, economic and social systems in Chile promote the structural abuse of elderly persons.  Structural and societal abuse of elderly persons in Chile is a broad topic, because the society is not conscious of elderly persons.

The general objective of the research is to generate an instrument that allows us to measure the phenomenon of structural abuse.  This will contribute to improving the qualitative and quantitative planning of public policy by allowing the evaluation of the public policy through the application of this instrument.

Presented by:
Dr Carolina Riveros Ferrada (Faculty of Law, University of Talca)
Dr Patricia Rodríguez Cuellar (Faculty of Economy, University of Talca)
Dr Sandra Alvear (Faculty of Economy, University of Talca)
Dr Ángela Arenas Massa (Faculty of Law, University of Talca)
