Central High School Film Festival to showcase students March 31
Central High School will host the  Central Film Festival March 31-April 1. The third annual festival is one of the only student-led, high school film festivals in the country.

The 2017 festival will feature on-site contests, keynote speakers and screenings at The Moxie. A red carpet awards ceremony will be hosted at the historic Fox Theatre downtown, said advisor Josh Cantrell.

Attendees this weekend submitted films produced by high school students from April 2016 to April 2017. Submitted films are entirely original and student-created, with no help from advisors or professional individuals outside of the classroom.

Rountree to celebrate 100 years of educating students
Rountree Elementary School will celebrate 100 years of education this spring at a special celebration. Rountree Elementary's 100th Anniversary Party will be held from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at Rountree Elementary School. The celebration will feature tours of the school, games and refreshments. The event is designed for the entire Rountree neighborhood, said Amy Patton, principal at Rountree.

"Rountree has such a history in the Springfield community," said Patton. "Rountree has been the heart of the community for 100 years, and it has served as the hub of the neighborhood. We have enjoyed all the unique school stories that have already been shared and are looking forward to hearing many more. Many families have had several generations attend Rountree."

Current Rountree students will serve as tour guides at the event. Community members are encouraged to bring old pictures, yearbooks and stories to share at the event.

Proposition SPS will be on April 4 ballot
Election Day is Tuesday, April 4, and on the ballot is an issue that affects Springfield Public Schools. Voters will decide on Proposition SPS, which will fund improvements to 19 schools, plus expand classrooms for early childhood education.

As part of its year-long Facility Master Plan process, Springfield Public Schools engaged the community in defining a long-range vision for creating quality learning environments for all students.

This plan will allow SPS to accomplish facility improvements in a strategic and fiscally responsible manner. If approved, $189 million will be invested over the next six years in facility improvements--$77 million of which will be focused on schools in Springfield's Zone 1 neighborhoods.  View the specific improvements planned for each school.

The 24-cent tax increase will be phased in over two years and cost the owner of a home valued at $100,000 less than $2 a month the first year and less than $4 a month beginning the second year.

Individuals who live outside of the city limits of Springfield but within the Springfield Public Schools attendance area are eligible to vote on all ballot issues related to Springfield Public Schools, including Proposition SPS.

View some important reminders about how to vote provided by the Greene County Clerk's Office.

A number of Springfield schools will serve as polling sites: Bissett, Cowden, Delaware, Harrison, McBride, McGregor, Portland, Rountree, Sequiota and Truman elementary schools; Hickory Hills K-8 School; Phelps Center for the Gifted; and Study Alternative Center. Parents and community members should plan to allow extra time for drop-off and dismissal due to increased traffic expected at these schools.
