HI TECH 3D PRINTOUT OF THE MISHKAN MODEL
This past Friday, March 24, in honor of
Parshas Vayakhel Pekudei,
Rabbi Hallel Newman brought a model
Mishkan to show students in the Lower Elementary what the
Mishkan looked like. The students from nursery through second grade, were encouraged to touch and handle the various utensils that were used in the
Mishkan, such as the
Aron, the
Menorah, the Golden and Copper
Mizbechos, as well as the portable walls and embroidered materials. Rabbi Newman was commissioned to create this replica, and it was an educational bonanza for our children to see something so beautiful and yet so complex, made clear and simple. The students were given a primer on all the individual pieces and how they were put together to construct the
Mishkan. Rabbi Newman also printed a 3D copy of the
Mishkan using colored plastic pieces.

2ND GRADE VISTS THE MODEL MATZAH BAKERY
In advance of
Pesach, our Second Grade students visited the
Matzah Bakery in Columbia run by
Rabbi Hillel Baron. It is an opportunity for our students to experience first hand
what Matzah baking is all about. They understand the element of time and the meaning of 18 minute Matzos. They also learned about how important it is to make the Matzos correctly. This was a full scale replica of a Shmurah Matzah bakery. The children have learned about the multi-step process of grinding grain kernels into flour, mixing water with the flour to create dough, shaping the dough into Matzah and how to bake it. Rabbi
Baron begins each session at the bakery by passing out paper hats that read "Model Matzah Bakery." Standing in front of two booths -- marked "Flour" and "Water" -- he explains the process used in baking Shmurah ("guarded") Matzah.
Best of all, the Second Graders had their chance to eat some genuine Shmurah Matzah
. See their smiling faces as they
prepare for the upcoming Yom Tov of Pesach!

SIYUM ON PARSHAS NOACH
The completion of Parshas Noach was
celebrated this past week in our Second Grade classes, and our talmidos have already begun learning Parshas Lech Lecha! Our Moros took the opportunity to review the key elements of the parsha and to inculcate messages of Emunah! In some classes, the Siyum enabled the girls to build a Teyvah with 3 levels using candy. In some classes, they recreated the rainfall of the Mabul and the gathering of the animals in to the Teyvah!

KINDERGARTEN C READS MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS
This classic tale of the famous Mallard ducks of Boston,
Make Way for
Ducklings
, a Caldecott Award winning book by Robert McCloskey, has been described as "one of the merriest picture books ever" (The New York Times).
Family is the central theme in this engaging classic. The mallard ducks illustrate love and care in the family. McCloskey describes the adult ducks carefully selecting a nesting site and, later, teaching the ducklings basic survival skills. Tension and adventure are created in the story during their dangerous trip across busy streets to get to the Public Garden and safety.
In conjunction with this unit, Mrs. Rosen and Kindergarten C created a moving replica of Mrs. Mallard and her eight ducklings. They labelled each duckling with its name and lined them up in alphabetical order behind their mother. The excitement was palpable as the girls took their family of "ducklings on wheels" for a walk down the busy hallways of Bais Yaakov's preschool.

SCIENCE SHOWS WOW THE STUDENTS
Our First and Second Grades this past week were exposed to fascinating presentations on "Weather: Hot and Cold" and "Rockets: Travel to Space". Mrs. Shaina Segal, has been presenting various scientific experiments to our elementary school for the past few years, courtesy of the PTA, to build curiosity about the natural phenomena which surround us. These shows align with the curricular objectives of each grade level. They provide hands on activities where the children learn about science in fun, real life applications.
