ANNOUNCEMENTS

Known for their original compositions, deconstruction of songs from the rock and R&B world, and, recently, their unique interpretation of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring," the jazz trio known as The Bad Plus will bring their innovative music to the Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 7. Tickets are available at the Ticket Office or online.

Speaking on their work with unaccompanied minors entering the United States from Mexico and Central America, Luther visiting assistant professor of social work Susan Schmidt and immigration lawyer Yer L. Vang will host a panel titled "Immigration and Unaccompanied Minors" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in F.W. Olin Building, Room  102. The event is part of the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement's Spring Series of panels titled "Tough Talk, Calm Voices."

Examining the gendered aspects of drug use and policy in Ukraine, Jennifer Carroll will deliver a lecture titled "Of Methadone and Men: The Gender of Drug Use in Wartime Ukraine" at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in the Dahl Centennial Union, Hammarskjold Lounge. Carroll details her research on opioid use and abuse to illustrate the impact of gendered social experiences on the treatment and prevention of opioid misuse, and the socio-political ramifications of those efforts.

In Barnets beste: Growing Up in Norway , Rachel Peterson,'04, explores childhood, children's rights and her own personal upbringing in Norway in the seventh annual Luther College Knut Gjerset lecture. Peterson's lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in the CFL Recital Hall. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge.

Area women of all ages have an opportunity to learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning, and charitable giving at the 13th Annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar on Friday, April 7.Hosted by Luther, the one-day educational seminar will be presented 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Hotel Winneshiek. The seminar's keynote speaker is Michelle Janssen, Certified Fund Raising Executive, long-time development professional and women's philanthropy advocate.

Join the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, April 6, in Valders 262 for a screening of the TEDTalk by Executive Communications Specialist and Journalist, Leezia Dhalla, Hiding in plain sight - my life as an undocumented American. KWLC Radio Presents: Norwegian Folk Music Night with Vidar Skrede. Join us in Marty's for an evening of traditional Norwegian music with Vidar Skrede, a renowned fiddler from Western Norway on April 6 from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Take a study break! Bring your ears! Prescription for Change: Ending America's Opioid Crisis will be screened at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206.   Produced by MTV and the Jed Foundation, the documentary follows three young women in recovery and features a conversation between rapper Macklemore, the film's executive producer, and President Barack Obama. Sponsored by Luther Counseling Services, Wellness, Health Services, Active Minds, Helping Services Youth and Families, and Winneshiek County ERASE Coalition. 

Wondering how to keep track of your sources, create a bibliography and footnotes? Zotero (free application) helps you collect, manage, and cite your sources. Bring your laptop to our workshop and learn how to download Zotero and set it up to manage your resources (available for PCs and MACs). J-TERM 2018 IN TANZANIA: The Paideia 450 course People  and  Parks : Pastoralism and Conservation in East Africa is a cultural immersion experience based in Maasai villages, small towns, and conservation areas in northern Tanzania. Featuring   black and white sequential photographs taken by Bob Modersohn, the photography exhibit "Click by click" will be on display April 5-May 21 in Preus Library. A reception for Modersohn will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in the Hovde Room of Preus Library. Printed on 6mm thick PVC plastic, the gallery features 11 black and white photo sequences taken by Modersohn during the 1970s and 1980s for The Des Moines Register.

Featuring sculptures by Decorah native Luke Severson, the art exhibit "Winn CO OP" will be on display March 30-April 29 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts. There will be an opening reception in the gallery at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 30.

Mayo Clinic College of Medicine information table -- Are you someone who wants to work in the healthcare field but are unaware of the many different careers besides nurse or physician that are out there? Come visit their information table in the Student Union on April 5 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. to learn about the many programs in the health field that are offered at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, MN!

The Diversity Center has an opening for a 6 hours per week Outreach Assistant position. We are looking for someone who is open and willing to learn (or knows about) intersectionality. You do NOT need to be a multicultural or international student to apply. Please apply on the Diversity Center website. Questions? Luther College will host Michael Osterholm, University of Minnesota Regents Professor and McKnight Endowed Presidential chair in Public Health, for the first Dr. David J. Roslien Distinguished Lecture in Science and Leadership at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Osterholm will sign books before his lecture from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life lobby. 

LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE! March 31 is the due date for books checked out from the main stacks by students before Sunday, March 19. Books may be renewed once online or by bringing them in physically to the circulation desk if you have exceeded the renewal limit. The new due date is May 12, the last day of class for the Spring Term. Click on "Library Account" online, sign in with your NorseKey to see what you have checked out and when it is due.

Did you store your bike in the barn for the winter? Bike retrieval is happening Thursday, March 30 and Friday, March 31 from 4-6 p.m. Failure to pick up your bike will result in it being donated. Contact Sustainable Transportation Educator  Sean McKenzie  with any questions!

The Music Department presents J.S. Bach's B-minor Mass at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 1, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. In addition to the performance in Decorah, a performance of the same program will take place at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 2. The performances feature Luther's Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Baldwin, professor of music and director of orchestra activities at Luther.

As part of Luther's Liberating Grace Conference, Ralston Deffenbaugh,  will deliver the address, "Welcoming the Stranger: Refugees at the Core of the Lutheran World Federation," at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, April 1, in the CFL Main Hall. Later in the day, Saturday, April 1, Deffenbaugh will also hold the workshop "The Global Challenge of Refugee Protection in an Age of Fear" as part of the conference. Tickets for the conference are available at the Ticket Office or on-line.

Exploring themes of trust through the intersection of dance, music and theater,  Visual and Performing Arts will perform a dance production of, "Trust Me," March 30-April 1 in the Center for the Arts, Jewel Theatre. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Purchase tickets at the door, online or at the Luther Ticket Office.

Take an alcohol and/or drug screening and get a free treat! Counseling Service and Wellness in partnership with Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health are offering an opportunity to check in on your alcohol and drug choices and learn more about low risk use. Receive a coupon for a Nordic Brew shake for completing a drug screening form and/or a Marty’s cookie for completing an alcohol screening form. Ready to start seeing green and wildflowers? Enjoy some time in the greenhouse and help Luther land stewardship transplant seedlings that are used to teach about the benefits of native habitats and pollinators. Counseling Service is seeking 1 work study student for 2017-18. Must be self-starter, creative, and interested in the promotion of positive mental health. We are hiring 1 Outreach Assistant to help with the creation and delivery of outreach programming.  4-5 hrs. weekly. Please review the job description for further explanation. Stefan Buchwald, director of the German Information Center based in Washington D.C., will visit Luther College March 28-April 1 for Campus Week, a series of events celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation sponsored by the German Embassy in Washington. During this time, he will meet with advanced students in Luther's German department and attend Luther's Liberating Grace conference March 31-April 1.

Bret Powers ('17) and Abbie Hughes ('18) presented their research about the interactions of fire, invasive buckthorn, and oak woodland restoration at the Midwest Ecology and Evolution Conference at the University of Illinois. Their work was completed with their collaborators Alice McNamara ('17) and Molly McNicoll.

The Career Center is accepting applications for Career Assistant work-study positions for the 2017-18 Academic Year. Career Assistants work 8-10 hour per week assisting office staff with projects and data entry. Career Assistants will also present workshops and assist peers with resumes and cover letters. A detailed job description is available in the Career Center. Interested applicants should submit a resume and cover letter to Carol Johnston in the Career Center by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017.

Sign up for a community garden plot this summer! We have full plots (20'x20') for $30, half plots (20'x10') for $20, and student plots (10'x10') for $10. Sign up online. DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT! Play dodgeball while supporting kids at the University of Iowa Children's hospital and sign up for the LCDM annual dodgeball tournament. It's on Friday, March 31 at 8:30 pm. Sign up as a team member or as a "free agent" and be placed on a team. $3 a person, and prizes for the winning team! 

"Before the Foundations," an exhibit by Skip McKinstry, will be on display, March 30-May 21, in the Luther College Center for Faith and Life, Second Floor Gallery. The exhibit focuses on the toll of creation, the loss of innocence, freedom of choice and God's authority, the struggle to function in a world divided from its source of life, and redemption.

Join Samantha Ea ’16 and Kelly Harris ’15 via Skype on Sunday, April 2 at 9:40 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Fireside Lounge. Samantha and Kelly are ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission in Jerusalem/West Bank and Rwanda, respectively. Learn about their year of mission, service, and accompaniment.
