Did You Know? During the "Famine" Landlords Exported Food
The Real Irish American Story Not Taught in Schools
We share the popular article by Bill Bigelow about how textbooks fail to look at the social forces that starved and uprooted over a million Irish ---- and that are starving and uprooting people today. Bigelow writes, "During the first winter of famine, as perhaps 400,000 Irish peasants starved, landlords exported 17 million pounds sterling worth of grain, cattle, pigs, flour, eggs, and poultry ---- food that could have prevented those deaths.

"The school curriculum could and should ask students to reflect on the contradiction of starvation amidst plenty, on the ethics of food exports amidst famine. And it should ask why these patterns persist into our own time."

Annual Great Hunger Commemoration
"Hunger on Trial" Lesson at the Annual Great Hunger Commemoration
We are honored that our lesson "Hunger on Trial: An Activity on the Irish Potato Famine and Its Meaning for Today" was used at an annual event sponsored by the Irish government, the 2016 International Great Hunger Commemoration held in Philadelphia. To add to the drama, the role play was conducted in an actual court house.

Send People's History to Arkansas
Since we announced sending Howard Zinn books to Arkansas teachers in opposition to legislation to ban books by Zinn, we received an overwhelming response to our offer ---- more than 700 requests in just four days!

Some of our book drive donors.
We would not be able to fulfill those requests without the help of publishers who donated books: Haymarket Books, Seven Stories, Beacon Press, The New Press, and HarperCollins. In addition, nearly 300 individuals donated to cover the costs of outreach and shipping. We are encouraged by the way everyone joined together to ensure students have the chance to learn the true history of the United States, a people's history.

Books start shipping out this week. We can still use your help ---- GIVE TODAY.
