Mad Dash Dance Fest 2018

Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center
At Mad Dash Dance Fest, we will offer sixteen master classes from a variety of styles, including modern, hip hop, experimental dance, and immersive dance theater. Our classes will focus a range of topics, including technique, creative process, repertory, the business of dance, and more.
This special event will feature four guest artists:

Mad Dash Dance Fest is free and open to the public, but enrollment will be limited. Online registration will open soon, so save the date and stay tuned!

Dr. Maura Keefe Named Dorothy G. Madden Professor
in Dance 2018-2020
|
|
Congratulations to
Professor
Maura Keefe
on being selected as the next Dorothy G. Madden Professor in Dance from Fall 2018 to Spring 2020!
Dr. Keefe has spent her career supporting dance creation, education, and preservation. She is a leading voice in the development of nationally recognized Audience Engagement programs in dance, through her writing, public interviewing, and lectures around the world. Her research in audience engagement has primarily taken place at
Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival
.
Her more recent work in the digital humanities enables her to expand her research to a wide range of dance cultures and other disciplines, such as theatre, music, and visual art.

Stage Management Students from National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts Finish Up Internship at UMD TDPS
|
|
Gao Jing and Zhang Yuanyuan have just completed their two-month internship at the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, as visitors from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts (NACTA) in Beijing. They have been under the tutelage of our production manager,
Cary Gillett
, who is spearheading a stage management training program at NACTA, the first of its kind in China.
The relationship between TDPS and NACTA can be traced back to our Fall 2012 production of Shakespeare’s
A Midusmmer Night’s Dream
,
which was a bilingual co-production that was staged at both The Clarice at the University of Maryland and at NACTA in Beijing.

- Professor Jennifer Barclay was awarded a DGF Writers Alliance Grant from the Dramatists Guild Foundation for her play, Ripe Frenzy. Congratulations, Jennifer!

- Studio Theatre is seeking interns for the spring! The company is hiring for all internship positions with a priority deadline of January 4th. For more information on the internship program, check out the flyer. If you have questions, please e-mail internship@studiotheatre.org.
- Interested in the digital humanities and the performing arts? Next semester, Susan Wiesner, our digital humanist in residence at the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library, will be teaching a graduate elective through the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH). The course will give a nuanced overview of the history of the digital within performance and explore various technical approaches that can enable the exploration of intersections of research and practice, the connections between creation and research, and yes, even "cool" performance.
