Spring has sprung in Durham Region! If you look closely, the trees are starting to bud, the birds are singing, and the people in our communities have a spring in their step as we welcome more pleasing temperatures. April is a great time to get out and explore our vibrant local art scene. With so many incredible galleries and studios to visit, and events to participate in, Durham is a wonderful place to nurture your creative spirit. Expect the Unexpected at the 2017 Durham West Studio Tour

Durham West Spring Studio Tour

Self-guided studio tours are an ideal way to enjoy creative arts with the whole family! You can experience them this spring during free events throughout Durham Region. 

Expect the unexpected at the Durham West Spring Studio Tour, taking place April 22 and 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event showcases the work of new and returning artists at several unique, local settings in the Pickering and Uxbridge communities.

April 19 is the National Canadian Film Day 150
DURHAM REGION 
National Canadian 
Film Day 150 

Reel Canada's National Canadian Film Day 150 is a coast-to-coast-to-coast celebration of
Canadian Cinema and Canada's 150th Anniversary. 

This event is considered to be the world's largest film festival, and will be held on April 19. Durham Region's Film Office is proud to share that Township of Brock and Town of Ajax communities have been chosen as host sites for this event.
 
The Beaverton Special Events committee has organized a free, all-day cultural event to include Durham's rich film heritage and talents. This event will include educational workshops, film screenings presented by Reel Canada, and an awards ceremony to honour Durham residents making significant contributions to the film industry.
 
The Town of Ajax is participating in this nationwide festival through TIFF's Canada on Screen
program. A free screening of The Sweet Hereafter will be hosted at the St. Francis Centre at 
p.m. The event is free to attend and a cash bar and concessions will be available. We ask that  you please enjoy responsibly. Those wishing to reserve a seat can RSVP by email or call 905-619-2529 ext. 2787.

Calling all young anglers to the 2017 Huck Finn Youth Fishing Day_

Huck Finn Youth Fishing Day

Spend the day fishing on Elgin Pond in Uxbridge with the whole family! The Huck Finn Youth Fishing Day will be taking place again this year on April 22, and you and your family are invited to participate in a fun-filled day of fishing and more.
 
With hundreds of fish just waiting to be caught, the free event will kick off at 9 a.m. with the Huck Finn parade through downtown Uxbridge, and includes a fishing derby at 10 a.m. Every young angler who is registered will go home with a prize. Head out to an Easter Egg Hunt near you_
DURHAM REGION 
Easter Egg Hunts

What an egg-cellent time of year to take the kids to an outdoor Easter egg hunt! A variety of locations across Durham Region are set to host you and your family for special Easter events.
 
Visit Brooks Farms, April 8 to 9, and 14 to 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Easter Fest Egg Hunt, or head to the Oshawa Airport on April 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for Easter Egg-stravaganza - an egg hunt on the airport grounds. You can even watch the Easter Bunny fly his own plane, and enjoy games, pony rides and more!

Race your way into spring

Enjoy the pleasant spring weather by getting outdoors and participating in some races!
 
Runners can register to participate in the 10th-annual Uxbridge Run for the Diamond, an event that includes a half marathon, a five-or 10-kilometre trail run/walk and a kid's dash, taking place April 15.
 
Do you love to mountain bike? The Ontario Cup (O-Cup) is one of Canada's premier XC Mountain Bike racing series, and is designed for riders who enjoy challenging courses and competing with riders from all over the province. Riders can now register in the O-Cup Mountain Bike Race Series, kicking off in Durham on April 23 at Woodnewton.

All aboard - it's time to set friendship in motion with Thomas the Tank Engine! Little engineers are invited to spend a day of friendship and family fun with everyone's favourite locomotive.
 
Tickets are now on sale for Day Out with Thomas: The Friendship Tour 2017 taking place August 11 to 13 and 18 to 20, at the York Durham Heritage Railway in Uxbridge. Now in its 22nd year, this highly popular children's tour will make 42 trips across the US and Canada, and will feature an array of friendship-inspired activities such as: photo opportunities, crafts and more.

Fine art is celebrated this month in Oshawa   

The Oshawa Art Association is celebrating its 50th Anniversary by hosting the Juried Art Exhibition Gala, taking place at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on April 6

Enjoy an evening dedicated to celebrating local creativity; complete with awards, music and refreshments. 

Later on this month, head to the popular Spring Art Festival! This show and sale will be hosted at Camp Samac, from April 27 to 30, and will display the creative work of more than 70 talented Durham Region artists in all mediums. 

Both events are free to attend.

Swing into Spring
 
Experience sensational spring activities at the annual Swing into Spring event, hosted at WindReach Farm in Ashburn. 

On April 29, bring the whole family to visit with the adorable new chicks and lambs, explore the petting zoo, and enjoy an interactive wool demo, sheep shearing, wagon rides, a vendor market, crafts and more! 

This event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $20 per car.
