As we eagerly welcome the arrival of spring on campus, our students have continued to make 2016-17 a year of accomplishment and service - and enjoyed a very well-deserved spring break in March! In just a few short days, we will begin our Inauguration Week which will celebrate the University, our community, and our students' calling to develop and share their gifts. The events are open to the public and we hope that our alumni, friends, and neighbors will join us on campus.

JOHN GLENN LECTURE SERIES: INAUGURAL LECTURE: APRIL 5
Dr. Scott E. Parazynski, a veteran of five Space Shuttle missions, physician, explorer, and entrepreneur, will deliver the inaugural lecture in The John Glenn Distinguished Lecture Series in Earth and Planetary Sciences. A friend and mission STS-95 crewmate of John Glenn, Dr. Parazynski served as his personal physician during the flight. The new annual lecture series, which was established and endowed by Bill Lovejoy '51 and his late wife Martha '52, honors John Glenn's memory and his lifetime of inspiring accomplishments. Free and open to the public, this year's lecture will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5 in the Boyd Science Center Auditorium.

INAUGURAL CONVOCATION: FRIDAY APRIL 7
I am honored by the trust you have placed in me to lead and serve Muskingum and am eager to celebrate the University's distinguished history and exciting future with you. The Inaugural Convocation will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 7 in the Anne C. Steele Center, with a reception immediately following in the John Glenn Gymnasium. All are invited to attend!

This year's spring musical
Pippin runs from Thursday, March 30 to Sunday, April 2 with shows at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday-Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Thompson Theatre in Caldwell Hall. The musical is a coming-of-age extravaganza where a gang of young mischief makers escort a young man though his self-discovery to finding his true purpose in life. Presented by the Department of Communication Media and Theatre in collaboration with the Department of Music, the production is directed by Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Emily Oehrtman, designed by Associate Professor of Communication Ronald Lauck, and conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Dr. David Turrill.
Tickets are $5 each (free to students, faculty, and staff) and are available at the door or by calling the Theatre Box Office at 740-826-8376.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES
March brought another new honor for freshman Marcus Dempsey, who capped his stellar basketball season by being named the D3hoops Great Lakes Region Rookie of the Year. He is the first Muskie to receive the award since its inception a decade ago. As reported in last month's issue, Dempsey is the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year and an All-OAC Honorable Mention selection.

Senior cross country and track and field runner Julie Fobes was named the OAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month for her achievements both in and out of the classroom. Fobes, a nursing major, is a five-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree and a member of the national honor society Lambda Sigma. A Muskie captain, she holds the Muskingum records in the 5K and one-mile races and recently earned All-Ohio honors in the 5,000 meter run.
Five student-athletes have been named to the OAC Academic All-OAC honor roll. Women's basketball led the way with three honorees: Mallory Taylor, senior Physical Education major; Stephanie Clark, junior Chemistry and Mathematics major; and Olivia Besancon, junior Business Management major. Men's basketball is represented by Logan Chuppa, junior Political Science major, and Wrestling by Jordan Burkholder, sophomore Health and Physical Education major.

Muskingum's Club Bowling team, now in its fourth season, has garnered national recognitions. The CollegeBowling website ranked the women's team in the top 25 nationally and the men's team in the top 75 nationally. Freshman Chemistry major Carmie Shook was ranked 17th nationally among top rookies by CollegeBowling and also received Academic All-American honors from the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA). Coach Doug Smith is one of four finalists for the Collegiate Club Championships Larry Wilson Women's Club Coach of the Year Award; the winner will be announced in April.

FACULTY RECOGNITION
Several faculty members have recently received well-deserved recognition in their field including:
Dr. Todd Lekan, Professor of Philosophy, has received the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy's prestigious Joseph L. Blau Prize for his paper "Who Are Moral Philosophers? Ethics James Style." This is the second time that Dr. Lekan has received the Blau Prize.
Associate Professor of Philosophy Dr. Rob Sharp is one of only 21 scholars nationwide invited to participate in the Council of Independent College's summer seminar on "The Verbal Art of Plato," and has also been invited to participate in a selective seminar on Meta-ethics taking place at Oberlin College.
Dr. Melissa Conroy, Associate Professor of Religion, has been selected as one of only 25 scholars nationwide to participate in the Council of Independent Colleges' "Teaching Interfaith Understanding" summer seminar.

SHARK TUB: MUSKIE ENTREPRENEURS PITCH BUSINESS IDEAS TO INVESTORS

Three small businesses founded by current students and alumni competed for the opportunity to be awarded a $10,000 investment to grow their businesses at the March 3 "Shark Tub" hosted by the Muskingum County Business Incubator (MCBI) in Zanesville. Modeled after ABC's hit reality show "Shark Tank", the event featured 18 entrepreneurs making their pitch to an audience of more than 600 who voted on which businesses should be sent to the next round. Muskingum was well represented by Jennings Java, a coffee-roasting business founded by sophomore Daniel Jennings; Cashmere & Twig, a line of nature-inspired skin care and hair care products founded by Jackie Bogart Matheney '01 and Jennifer Bogart Eubanks '98; and Quimby's Keepsakes, a line of unique handcrafted gifts founded by Shelly DeVol Stottsberry '03 and also represented at the event by Shauna Jellison Kelley '04. Jennings Java and Cashmere & Twig both moved on as finalists, presenting their proposals to a panel of "sharks" - including Aaron Spragg '03 - and both received a portion of the final prize.

CONNECTING WITH THE COMMUNITY
The 10th annual
WMCO Weekend on March 23-25 featured a themed series of fundraising events - "Unleashed!" - which benefited three local charities: the Muskingum County Animal Shelter, American Red Cross, and Operation Feed, an arm of the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. Highlights included a Brewed Awakenings Kelley Coffeehouse event for our students and two events open to the public, a Muskingum County Animal Shelter Dog Adoption Event and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's "Animal Encounters." Associate Professor of Communication Dr. Lisa Marshall '03 is the WMCO Station Manager.
April 2 is the 2nd annual Delta Color 5K, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in McConagha Stadium. Proceeds support the House of Samuel and Open Arms Pregnancy Center in Cambridge, Ohio. All are welcome to participate. Email
