A Note from Dean Cavalieri

March brought exciting news about our school and our graduating class. The new rankings of America's best medical schools by  U.S. News & World Report , announced on March 18, represent a new milestone of achievement for our school. That same week, we celebrated Match Day, in many ways one of the greatest days of the academic year. On that day, the Class of 2017 continued SOM's amazing record of achievement, with more than 98 percent of our graduating physicians successfully matching, including at some of the most competitive programs across the country.

My best,

Thomas A. Cavalieri, DO, MACOI, FACP
Dean

U.S. News Ranks SOM Among "America's Best"

In newly released rankings, which are for the year 2018,  U.S. News & World Report includes Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine  among America's top medical schools for both Primary Care and Geriatrics.

In primary care, SOM is in a four-way tie - with Columbia University, Thomas Jefferson University and the University of Illinois - for 51st place out of 118 medical schools that submitted data about their primary care programs. This is the first time that the publication has recognized SOM for its Primary Care programs and results from an analysis of data submitted by each school, including the percentage of recent graduates who entered residency programs in family practice, pediatrics and internal medicine.

In addition to Primary Care, U.S. News & World Report also ranks all fully accredited American medical schools for Research and eight specialty areas, including Geriatrics. For the specialty areas, U.S. News asks deans and senior administrators of medical schools to nominate up to 10 schools offering the best programs in each discipline. Rowan's selection for Geriatrics is the 16th time SOM has received recognition for its programs in this increasingly important field. U.S. News ranked the school in a tie with the University of Alabama and immediately after Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.

Class of 2017 Celebrates Match Day

At a midday event held at the Mansion on Main Street on March 17, students from the Class of 2017 discovered the hospitals and programs where they will spend the next three to seven years as physicians training in their chosen specialties. The room was buzzing with excitement and anticipation as 74 students awaited their matches from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), joining their peers who previously matched through the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) program in February, and three students who secured placement through the Military Match.

This year, over 43,000 applicants to the NRMP vied for fewer than 32,000 residency positions. More than half of the students matched to primary care residencies in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine or obstetrics/gynecology, 70 of whom will train at New Jersey based residencies.

SOM's Graduate Medical Education program also wrapped up a highly successful match season. The program filled all 61 intern and residency positions that it had available, with 22 of those positions filled by SOM graduating physicians.

Department of Family Medicine Members Receive Recognition at ACOFP

Several Family Medicine faculty and residents attended the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) Annual Convention & Scientific Seminars March 16-19 in Kissimmee, FL. Dr. Alison Mancuso, Associate Professor and Residency Program Director, was inducted into the Conclave of Fellows during an awards ceremony and reception. Two Family Medicine residents received awards for their research poster presentations: Dr. Amanda Cardella placed first for "Start Talkin' - Stimulating Tobacco Cessation Counseling at Point of Care" and Dr. Jennifer Sepede received an honorable mention for "Parental Decision Making Regarding Vaccination of their Children Against Human Papilloma Virus."

In addition to hosting an alumni reception for convention attendees on March 17, a separate event was held for alumni in the Orlando area who did not attend the convention. The dinner was part of the Office of Student Affairs and Alumni Engagement's ongoing efforts to encourage networking and provide school updates.

SOM Attends 2017 AAO Convocation

D rs. Millicent King Channell, Knic Rabara and Scott Spagnolo-Hye, along with nearly 40 students and staff, represented SOM at the 2017 American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) Convocation in Colorado Springs March 22-26. Dr. Channell presented a breakout session on gait biomechanics to physician attendees, as well as a student workshop.

For a third year in a row, a student at SOM has won first place in the Student American Academy of Osteopathy's (SAAO) National A. Hollis Wolf Case Presentation competition. This year's honor went to Mia Song. The A. Hollis Wolf Case Presentation seeks to demonstrate the student's understanding of appropriate osteopathic principles for a specific patient, including the application of patient diagnosis of somatic dysfunction and appropriate treatment.

A reception for school representatives and SOM alumni was held on March 24.

COM Day on the Hill

March 9 was COM Day on the Hill, organized by the AACOM. Accompanying Dean Cavalieri that day were Student Council President Ashley Sam and the immediate Past President, Ronak Mistry. Deans from medical schools around the country and their student leaders met with their respective elected officials to discuss the need for more graduate educational programs and the challenge medical students face regarding medical school debt. The SOM team met with the Offices of Congressmen Norcross and Pascrell and Senators Booker and Menendez, including a face-to-face meeting with Congressman Norcross, who took time to meet with them despite the hectic day on Capitol Hill.

Over 100 Scholarships Awarded at Annual Luncheon

The Annual Scholarship Luncheon held on March 5 included SOM's largest group of scholarship recipients ever.  Two hundred students, family members, alumni, donors, faculty and staff attended the event, which provided an opportunity for scholarship recipients to meet and thank the donors who helped contribute toward their graduate and medical education.  Thanks to generous and loyal donors, 111 awards totaling more than $368,000 were presented to students from the School of Osteopathic Medicine and, for the first time, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Additionally, nine new scholarships were awarded this year.

Students Learn Mindfulness Can Be Fun

The Department of Student Affairs hosted their first Mindful Minute to Win It event with Crystal Pizarro, MA, LPC, NCC, CHLC. Mindful Minute to Win It teaches students that mindfulness can be fun! Incorporating movement, focus and novelty, participants practiced key mindfulness techniques during the challenges. Research has indicated that repetition, fun and multiple sensory stimulation are key ingredients to motivate the participant to recall the techniques and utilize them in daily life. Each Mindful Minute to Win It technique is designed to be played with a partner to incorporate teamwork into the game.  Participants also enjoyed refreshments and had the opportunity to win prizes.
