National Cancer Research Funding Cuts
and VA Medicaid Expansion
Spring is turning out to be a very busy season for policy related to health care and breast cancer. VBCF continues to monitor developments and will send out action alerts as needed.

National Action:
The White House recently announced proposed plans to cut $1 billion in cancer research funding in next year's National Institute's of Health budget and cut an additional $1 billion in medical research funding from this year's budget as well.

Call your House Representative today and ask them to reject any cuts to cancer research funding and increase funding for the National Institutes of Health this year.

State Action:
Virginia has the opportunity  to accept $2.4 billion a year in federal funding to expand Medicaid health care coverage. VBCF is a member of the Health Care for All Virginians (HAV) Coalition.  See their latest action alert below:

On March 27th, Governor McAuliffe proposed a  budget amendment restoring his authority to pursue planning for Medicaid expansion. This will be up for consideration by the General Assembly during the  April 5th veto session. Passage of the amendment requires a majority vote in both the House of Delegates and the Senate.

The odds are long but 400,000 people are counting on us!

The HAV Coalition will communicate with all legislators, reminding them about the critical need for Medicaid to provide coverage for uninsured Virginians.

We need YOU to do the same. Please help us share this message with state lawmakers NOW! Individuals should contact their own state Delegate and state Senator. HAV organizations should activate your networks to do the same.  We've provided talking points and resources below.

Talking Points:
  1. Congressional efforts to repeal & replace the ACA have failed and the ACA remains the law of the land.
  2. The American public supports the Medicaid program that insures 70 million people nationwide (1 million in Virginia).
  3. Most of the 31 states with Medicaid Expansions (16 with Republican leadership) want to continue the new coverage and the federal funding that supports it.
  4. The 19 non-expansion states (like Virginia) are at a tremendous financial disadvantage if federal funding changes in the future.
  5. Virginians have waited long enough!  It's time to expand Medicaid!
