Wednesday, April 12, 2017,  Duke Energy will be conducting an Emergency Siren Test in our area...

Sirens and Emergency BroadcastsTo alert people outdoors, county officials will sound sirens located within the 10-mile area Emergency Planning Zones (EPZ) around the station. Sirens will sound repeatedly in an emergency. If you hear a loud, steady sound coming from one of the sirens around the nuclear station, tune to a local radio or TV station. These stations will carry an emergency alert information (EAS) message from local officials to give you information and instructions on what to do. Hearing a siren does not mean you should evacuate. It simply means to tune to a local radio or television station for information. If sirens are sounding and you do not see or hear a message on radio or television, contact your county's emergency management office.  To alert people indoors, radio and television stations will carry emergency information messages from local officials. Follow their instructions. Stay tuned. Remember, outdoor sirens will not necessarily be heard inside homes or businesses.   In an emergency, fire, police and rescue units may also patrol the affected area and sound their sirens, if necessary.  Boaters also would be alerted via sirens, loudspeakers, etc.
Please note: Sirens are tested regularly to ensure they are working correctly. The testing is part of normal maintenance and no public action is necessary.

"Great Way to Support our Local Businesses in Southport"

FUN, SOCIAL and SUPPORTIVE.... Join the Mob..... The Cash Mob.  FEBRUARY MOB MEET UP INFO: Meet at the N. Howe & E. Nash Streets on Tuesday, April 4th at 4pm. After we "Mob" we will celebrate.  What is a Cash Mob? A Cash Mob is similar to a Flash Mob but instead of sing/dancing it spends $20.00 as a way to support our locally owned shops. The Chamber will announce a general meeting location, date and time but the mob will not know where they are going until they arrive.  Who Can Mob? Mob members can be fellow chamber members, residents or visitors. The only rule is the Cash Mob participants agree to spend $20.00 at the retailer.
Mob Social: After the mob shops participants will be invited to follow the leader to socialize nearby for an adult beverage or sweet at one of our member pubs, wine shop, bakery, or ice cream (yogurt) parlor.  Schedule: The Cash Mob will convene at 4:00pm one day per month: January, February, March, April, May, September, October and December. The day of the week can vary between Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursday.   Location: Chamber Staff will hold a drawing each month from all the member retail establishments that are independently owned and/or operated who also sell a variety of items that can be purchased for $20.00.   Mob Nofication: The Chamber will maintain an e-mail database to notify mob participants as well as announce the mob's general meeting location on our Facebook, Google+ and on our website Events Calendar. The notification will let the mob know where to assemble but not the exact shop.

SOUTHPORT

"America's Happiest Seaside Town" by Coastal Living magazine, Southport is steeped in history and picturesque beauty.  Southport has a charm that has not only attracted visitors, but the eye of the movie industry as well. Films such as "Safe Haven", "A Walk to Remember" and "The Secret Lives of Bees" all feature scenes shot in Southport. Fronting the Cape Fear River and the notorious Frying Pan Shoals, Southport has long been a port of haven for sea captains as far back as the 1700's. Stroll the docks and have a crab-cake sandwich and steamed shrimp at one of several restaurants featuring outdoor dining on the waterfront. Take a piece of culture or history home from a gallery or antiques shop, or try golfing, sailing or skydiving in the area. Whether you simply soak in the Old-South atmosphere or visit the sites, Southport is a vacation to discover the old and enjoy it anew.
