What is our Blaine Gala?
The Blaine Gala is an annual fundraiser held in the Spring. It's a chance for parents to come together, get to know each other, bid on amazing art projects created by our children, parties thrown by our parents and community businesses, and unique experiences brought to you by Blaine teachers and staff. In addition to these items, there will be music and raffle prizes, as well as heavy appetizers and delicious drinks.
The proceeds raised at the gala support the good work done every day at Blaine by the PTA.

Tickets go on sale April 3.  As the Gala date gets closer, we will be asking for volunteers to help with the actual event. This super-fun night takes a lot of effort to make it a success. We hope to see you there.

How can you participate/help?
  • Sign-Up Parties -  Here's where you come in! The committee has many fun and creative ideas for Sign-Up Parties, but we need Hosts and Hostesses. As a Host, you pick the theme, date, time, location, price point and number of guests. Families can host solo or team up with friends! Other Blaine families then "buy in" to your event - it is a great (and FUN!) way to meet and mingle within the Blaine community while supporting your school and kids. Here is a (small) sampling of potential "themes" that are not yet hosted: Outdoor Movie Night/Margaritas for Senoritas/Putts and Pints Golf Night/Wimbledon Brunch/Wigs and Wings Happy Hour/St. Patrick's Day Celebration/Agua Verde Kayak Excursion/Father-Son Putt Putt Party/Mother-Daughter Cupcake Class/..or anything else you can dream up! Please contact Trish Lambert at [email protected] to secure your theme or if you have any ideas or questions. Party ideas should be submitted by Friday, April 7 to get maximum promotion at the Fiesta Gala.
  • Teacher Experiences - Every year the teachers have fun coming up with new ideas for unique experiences for your kids. Examples of past experiences are: Bowling night, Movie after school, Sleepover in the gym, and more!! Plan to bid on these great experiences at the event. Experience ideas should be submitted by Friday, April 7.
  • Classroom art projects- Each classroom creates a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork to be bid on at the Gala.  We need parents to volunteer to help students create the art, as well as parents who want to bid on the art at the big event. Please contact Thyra McKelvie ([email protected]), if you want to help with this or have questions. Completed art projects are due Friday, April 7.
  • Games and Raffles-This year, you can win a stocked win cellar, and a ton of other prizes at the Gala.  How can you help? Great question! We need to stock the cellar and collect the prizes before we can raffle them off!
  • WINE-We are asking for your favorite bottle of wine to be dropped off at Kerry Stone's ([email protected]) house 2521 27th Ave W, between now and April 7. It can be an inexpensive bottle, or that special, spendy bottle you've been saving for just the right occasion.
  • PRIZES-We are also asking for big ticket items like vacations, Seahawks tickets, or anything you would want to "win" in a raffle or auction. If you have big-ticket items to donate, or know people who would like to donate, please contact Darlene Henderson ([email protected]).
Tickets go on sale April 3.  As the Gala date gets closer, we will be asking for volunteers to help with the actual event. This super-fun night takes a lot of effort to make it a success. We hope to see you there.

Special thanks to our 2017 auction team:
Angela Henrdon, Thyra McKelvie, Trish Lambert, Kerry Stone, Aubrey Ciro, Amanda Turner, Kristina Roebke, Darlene Henderson and Julie Jacobson.

Spring Musical Volunteers Needed !
Planning Mtg Mar 28th @4:10pm

Hello, generous Blaine community. We are fortunate to have Garrett Lander heading up our middle school production of Into the Woods, Jr this spring, but as you know it takes a lot of time and talent to put on a big show like this one!

Right now, we have a pretty lean crew of volunteers and could use some additional help in the following areas:

PUBLICITY - Do you have some experience with social networking and marketing events in various forms of media?  We'd like to get the word out about our show to multiple sites and publications in our community.

COSTUMES - We have 2 people at this point who are helping to design, sew, assemble and shop for costumes for our large cast.  If you are creative, handy, or crafty, or love thrift-shopping we could really use your help!

SET/PROPS - Currently, the same 2 people working on costumes are also heading up the set/props. It would be great if we could delegate this to others or at least have a larger crew of volunteers to help execute the vision.  Do you know of anyone who might be able to donate existing props/sets?  Are you handy and/or artistic and love to build and create?  Do you have any contacts in the theater world that might be useful - please reach out to us.

MAKE-UP/HAIR - We will need a small army to help out with make up and hair on the nights of the productions - June 1-4.

PRE-SHOW DINNER/FUNDRAISER - The idea was proposed to host a meal/show event, possibly prior to the Saturday performance, as a way to raise money for our theater program. We currently have someone working on the food aspect, but we are looking for help with rental donations (tables, chairs, dishes, table cloths, etc) and also will need help with food prep and servers.  If this is something that appeals to you, please come to our next meeting for more information

FLOWER PROCUREMENT/SALES - We will be selling flowers and bouquets on the days of the performances for those families that want to honor the cast and crew of Into the Woods, Jr. If you have a yard full of flowers, a means of procuring flowers donations, or are able to help, please let us know.

All interested volunteers, please contact Gretchen Jones  [email protected]   or 206.228.2687.

WE ARE HAVING ANOTHER PLANNING MEETING ON TUESDAY, MARCH 28TH @ 4:10  PM .

Please come and see how you can help this show, and our theatre program succeed!

TIGER TRAIL CLUB
Wednesdays
Lunch Recess K-5th

Students will get a chance to run or walk the "Tiger Trail"- the Tiger paw prints that encircle the Blaine playground every Wednesday moving forward at lunch recess. If your student(s) wish to participate, please make sure they are wearing sneakers- it makes it much easier on their feet!

Students can earn "feet" at milestones such as 1 mile, 5 miles, 10 miles and so on. All students that ran last year have their laps and mileage carried forward.

Volunteers are appreciated (sign up here). Tiger Trail Club is every Wednesday (12:05pm-1pm) through the end of the year so lots of opportunities to help! And of course- if you aren't able to commit for the whole hour- we really need help during the K-1 recess (12:05-12:30pm).
Thanks, and Go Tigers!  Becky Shields

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students)

What are Watch D.O.G.S.? Fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father figures who volunteer at least one day a year in a variety of school activities . The Watch D.O.G.S. program is active in over 5,148 registered schools in 47 states and recognized by the National PTA.
The Catharine Blaine Watch D.O.G.S. program is great way for dads, step-dads, or other father-figures (uncles, cousins, grandfathers, etc.) to be involved in their student(s)' lives at school while also supporting the school as a volunteer.
In order to participate, dads (or other father-figures) must become an approved Seattle Schools Volunteer ( here is a link to the requirements ) which include a background check and a video training. After becoming an approved volunteer, go the sign-up online here is a link to the sign-up and find an available day to volunteer (there are more openings through the remainder of the school year on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays). On your volunteer day, you will be handed a schedule for your day and get the chance to be involved in classrooms, out on the playground, and eat lunch in the cafeteria with your own student(s).
Already this year, over 40 dads (including one grandpa) have volunteered at Blaine for over 250 volunteer hours at Blaine. Way to go! The teachers, staff, and students thank you for volunteering, but there are still slots unfilled.
If you are interested in participating in the program or any other questions about Watch D.O.G.S. please contact Ben Eckhart at [email protected] .

K-5 Jump Rope For Heart March 20-31

Did you know that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of all Americans and more people die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined?

To teach students about the importance of lifelong healthy heart habits and to support important research for heart disease and stroke, the P.E. Department will be fundraising for The American Heart Association again this year in all K-5 classes.

Students can choose to gather donations by either setting up a webpage, and/or by using the provided sponsor form envelope with family and friends.  Informational letters and instructions for either method of gathering donations were sent home this week, along with an outline of the leveled incentive/thank you gift prizes.

Last year Blaine students raised $5,700.00 - our goal for this year is $6,000.00.

Whether or not your student opts-in to the fundraising campaign, ALL K-5 students will be able to enjoy jump roping and healthy heart lessons presented in P.E. classes throughout next week.  Thank you for your support.

Please direct any questions to Ms. Pickens  or Mr. Miller .

ERG ED

Our Middle School students just completed our two week Erg Ed unit thanks to the ongoing partnership between the George Pocock Rowing Foundation and Seattle Public Schools.

Blaine students had the opportunity to work in teams on several different challenges, enjoyed learning some of the basics about a great lifetime sport in our region while also getting a vigorous cardio-respiratory workout. We also were able to feature the ergs at our Family Fitness event earlier this month for the school community to enjoy.

From the Erg Ed Pocock website : "Erg Ed®, launched in 2010, is a classroom-based indoor rowing education program operating as part of Seattle Public Schools. Erg Ed brings equipment (indoor rowing machines - ergs), technology, and highly qualified instructors to middle school physical education classes so that teachers and students can access rowing without leaving the classroom. Erg Ed has been integrated into Seattle's "Five For Life" physical education curriculum and serves as part of the physical education experience for all middle and K-8 schools in the District. Erg Ed is available to over 10,000 students at all 22 middle and K-8 schools across the city of Seattle. Thanks to the support of US Rowing, Erg Ed expanded nationwide in 2015 and currently runs in the following cities: Memphis, TN, Allentown, PA, Portland, OR and Chicago, IL. Most recently, Oakland Strokes partnered with the Pocock Foundation to bring Erg Ed to Oakland, CA.
