History Fair
by Miriam Schiller
Principal
This Thursday, March 23, the school's History Fair was judged during the day, followed by an evening awards assembly presented to the parents. This event was the culmination of almost three months of hard work by the students. What a wonderful opportunity for them to explore ideas, find one they felt passionate about, and learn to present and defend a thesis to an audience. In the process, they developed research skills, writing skills, organizational skills, and learned how to manage a long-term project. I cannot possibly adequately thank the History Fair teachers (Joe Esse, Neil Landers, Mindy Schiller and their team supporter, Miriam Kass) for all the hours outside of school they spent teaching and supporting our students.
When I hear about the success of our students after they graduate from Akiba-Schechter, I am not surprised. We know that most of our students get into the high schools of their choice, but more importantly, we hear of their many accomplishments in high school and beyond. This kind of project-based learning is one of the reasons.
Thank you to all the judges who gave of their time and to parents for their support. Mazal tov to all the students for projects well done. Please visit the
History Fair Website for the listing of those students and projects that won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. View
students' websites and documentaries here. Enjoy!

Passover
by Rabbi Holman
With Purim in the rear-view-mirror, we are gearing up for Passover. It's a wonderful time to connect one generation to the next. The Haggadah is structured in a question-answer format for just that reason. There are other customs at the Seder that were designed solely to keep the attention of the children. We dip twice; we remove the Seder plate; we pass out treats and have fun with the Afikoman, all to keep the children involved. The strength of Judaism relies on passing our traditions with joy and love to the next generation. This unbroken chain is the secret of our survival. Shabbat Shalom!

Preschool Teachers Depart for Jewish Educator Trip to Reggio Emilia in Italy
Thanks to a grant from CFJE/JUF, Carla Goldberg, Dara Henning and Lexie Harris left yesterday with a group of 18 other Jewish early childhood educators from Chicagoland to participate in a study tour of Reggio Emilia in Italy. All year, this group has been digging into their identity as Jewish early childhood educators as they read, studied, shared work, and explored common areas of interest. In Italy next week, they will visit the visionary schools of Reggio Emilia to experience their extraordinary work with children and communities.

Author Fair
On Tuesday the 3rd/4th graders in Mrs. Leonard's class held their Author Fair. After reading books by an author of their choice, the kids researched their author, created a timeline, and wrote a six-paragraph essay. To culminate this unit, the students had various choices to create a diorama or a 4-D pyramid to depict scenes from their favorite book by their author. They could also create an abstract picture of their author using objects for parts of the face and body to describe their author. Aviya (4th) is pictured explaining her abstract portrait of author Dan Gutman.
