Header for Changed

During our Lenten worship services, we have been studying the stories of change and transformation in the Gospel of John. These are the stories of the people whose lives changed forever after meeting Jesus. When we hear these stories, it is like we are there with Jesus on the journey toward Easter and the resurrection. We are there with the crowd letting these change stories transform us.

As we hear and experience these powerful transformation stories, they change us, if we let them. Join us during Lent and Holy Week and experience the power of change in your life.  That power will transform your life forever.

En Agape',

Rev. Michael

DISCIPLES WOMEN PROMOTING CHURCH WORLD SERVICE BLANKET FUND

The Disciples Women are promoting the Church World Service Blanket Fund in March. Your generous donations to date total $864. That's 86 blankets. Our goal is to provide 100 blankets. You can help us reach that goal! Blanket donations are $10 per blanket.
Cash is acceptable and checks may be made payable to Slash Christian Church and designated to Blanket Fund. "No one walks away from those in need thinking, "someone else can help."
We can help. This is our opportunity to respond compassionately.

College Scholarship application links will be available on April 1st on our website homepage and in the Slash Flash on Monday, April 3rd. The deadline to submit applications to the office is Sunday, April 30th.

1. General Requirements: Applicants must be an active member of Slash Christian Church, in accordance with Article III of the Constitution of the church.

The Funds: The Student Youth Scholarship fund is for those students entering their first year of studies beyond high school.
The Continuing Education Fund is for those students, who have completed the first year of post high school studies, and have evidence of their ability to compete on the next level of studies.
Each of these educational funds is open for further contributions, memorials or honor gifts, thus enhancing the possibility of more available funds for scholarships.

2.  Depending on the scholarship for which you are applying, applicants must have successfully completed the required educational requirements and be enrolled into a college or vocational program in accordance with the appropriate scholarship fund eligibility requirements. Contact Don Richardson or the church office if you have questions or need further clarification of eligibility requirements.

3. An award from the designated scholarship funds is not contingent upon intended field of study. Although not required, pursuit of religious studies or ministry is strongly encouraged.

The Clay Springs Ruritan Club will sponsor its
Annual Community Wide Easter Egg Hunt
at Slash Christian Church on Saturday, April 15th at 10:00 AM.

Children 1 - 12 years of age are welcome to bring their many friends to join in the fun and search for those "special eggs"!
We hope to see a BIG crowd!

COMPASS USA
SPANISH and FRENCH STUDENTS NEED HOST FAMILIES IN JULY!!!

Have an amazing experience this summer! Host a student from Spain or France (ages 13-17) in your home for 3 - 4 weeks. Learn about their culture while he or she learns about living in an American family just being a part of what you regularly do. We have a variety of programs to suit your family's work or non-working schedule. Families receive stipends to help out with expenses. We can help work out transportation or vacation concerns. This will be a rich experience for your family!
Contact Debbie Hardy by phone 909-3190 or email.

Outreach Opportunities

Week of Compassion Offering
In February, you donated $1261.44 to the Week of Compassion offering.   Not only do we help those around the world find ways to sustain life, but we also make a difference in our own country when natural disasters hit.   You may not think that your one donation makes a difference - but believe me - when we put all of those donations together, we prove that "YOU ARE HERE" where help is needed!

Memory Name Plate for Pavilion - Do you wish you had purchased a memory name plate for someone to be placed on the new pavilion? We are holding open the ordering of those plates through March. So, if you still wish to purchase a plate, pick up a form from the back of the sanctuary and return it with your check by March 31st. A dedication of the pavilion is planned for Sunday, April 30th with ONE Worship at 11 am followed by a pot luck lunch.

ACES Food Drive -
Many hungry adults and children will be fed because of your donations to the ACES food drive.  The Outreach Committee wishes to thank you so much for your donations.  It is an awesome sight to see all of the bags of groceries lined up - showing how much you do care for others.  Thank you.
Our next food drive will be at the beginning of June.  We want to see if we can collect 500 items to donate to ACES as food or clean hygiene items.  So wait to collect your bags to fill in June and let's see if we can reach our goal!

Easter Special Offering received April 9 & 16
Through your care and compassion, your gift makes it possible for your Global Ministries partner in Lesotho, a tiny land-locked country in southern Africa, to provide Qiloane Primary School with a roof and walls to keep out the rain. Your gift of concern makes it possible for National Benevolent Association to call together people with common interests in health and social services projects from feeding the hungry to addressing mental health issues and more.
Because of you, there are educational supports for young families such as Children Worship and Wonder from Family & Children's Ministries in Disciples Home Missions. And, of course, your support is integral to the work of Disciples Volunteering, chaplaincy, Office of Christian Vocations and other ministries housed in Disciples Home Missions. With your gift, the Central Pastoral Office for Hispanic Ministries, North American Pacific/Asian Disciples and National Convocation can each provide connection and conversation for their communities. Thank you. And there is more!

The funds you provide help to connect congregations to stewardship support and news from across the life of the Church through the Center for Faith and Giving and Communication Ministries. You are there with the Council on Christian Unity at ecumenical events and the Disciples of Christ Historical Society which serves all three historic streams of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
Thank you for your care and prayer for all the work of the Church-"from your doorsteps to the ends of the earth."

District IX News
District IX is working very hard to pull churches in our district together for special events.   They are all invited to join us for the CROP Hunger Walk in October.   They will be meeting as the District Assembly at Slash in September with a meal and we are hoping to be able to spread to those attending the special place that Craig Springs holds in the hearts of those at Slash.   There is an event called Running For Anna that you will hear more about later in April which sponsors the building of a well in Uganda, Africa.   This run is in memory of Anna Wright, a former soccer player from Patrick Henry High School and Lynchburg College.   The 5K Memorial run/walk is on May 6, and anyone from Slash who would like to participate is welcome to join.   There will be forms in the back of the sanctuary related to that special event for your information.   As your District IX representative, I just wanted to let you know what is planned thus far.

Relay for Life Walk - Saturday June 17th

The Outreach Team is putting together a relay team for Slash Christian Church to help battle cancer.   Probably every one of you is related to someone or knows someone who has been affected by cancer.   Research is making progress and hopefully in the years to come, there will be a cure (or prevention) for many forms of cancer.  This year's Western Hanover Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, June 17th at Kings Dominion Camp Wilderness Campground in Doswell.
The Slash team link is www.relayforlife.org/westernhanoverva

Join now - don't wait - be a part of our team! OR obtain a registration form from Cathy Tillman now so we can get our team registered and plan for this event.   We will be having a Name Your Price Bake Sale later in spring to support our Relay for Life Team.   If you would like to make a donation, you may do so by making a tax deductible donation by check made payable to American Cancer Society and give to any team member.   Let's kick cancer right off the map!

All History Buffs: Join us this Sunday at 1:30 pm at Slash

The Hanover Historical Society will meet in the sanctuary on Sunday, March 26th, 2017 at 2:30 pm for a program talk about the historical roads in Hanover County. These programs usually take an hour and include some refreshments afterwards.
Tim O'Gorman is the author of several historical books. He will present his talk with slides which will include US Rt 1 and US Rt 301 and 2.  If you are interested in the old roads of our county, I am sure you will be fascinated to learn how the landscape has changed and the relationship it may have affected regarding your property.

Mr. O'Gorman's bio:
Tim O'Gorman is the former Director of the US Army Quartermaster Museum at Ft. Lee, Virginia, retiring after 40 years of service working in a variety of civilian and Army Museums worldwide. His retirement has allowed him to pursue his other interest - commercial archaeology. His research and documentation of Virginia roadside history has included "Spending the Night on the Pike; A Postcard History of Motels Along
U.S. Highway 1 From Richmond to Petersburg, 1920-1975" published in 2013, and "Spending the Night on Virginia's Main Street; A Postcard History of Motels Along U.S. Highway 1 From Arlington to South Hill, 1920-1965", published in 2014. "Traveling Virginia's Tobacco Trail" documents the roadside history of U.S. Highway 301, an important and well-traveled highway for those on the way to Florida in the 1940's and 50's. Tim continues to serve as a peer reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums and the U.S. Army Center of Military History, and is a member of the Society for Commercial Archaeology. His interest in old motels, tourist courts, and roadside features stem from the history they represent and the importance of documenting this rapidly disappearing historic resource.

Financial news and notes:

Our new counting teams are working hard, learning their responsibilities and keeping track of your generous covenants and financial offerings. There a few suggestions for the church family that will assist them in their recordkeeping duties.
*Whenever possible, please use your boxed offering envelope.
*If not using your offering envelope, put your envelope number on memo line of check or on outside of pew envelope.
*If splitting offering between current ministries and other funds, please mark on envelope, mark on memo line of check or include a note.
*If cash is placed in envelope without envelope number or name, the offering is processed as loose offering and no individual receives credit for the offering.
*Week of Compassion and Reconciliation envelopes do not have envelope numbers on them; therefore, if cash in one of these envelopes is not marked by giver, then no individual receives credit.
*Write clearly the amounts on the check.   The bank processes the checks by a mechanical reader.

Fundraising and associated recordkeeping
IRS Charity Auction tax provisions and requirements:
For the donator of the item:
If the donated item has a fair market value (FMV) of $250 or more, the organization should send acknowledgement letters with certain required language, including that no goods or services were received in exchange for the donation. This acknowledgement is required if the donor is going to take a tax deduction. The organization should not put the value of the donated item on the acknowledgement letter, even though the donor might have provided it. The donor is responsible for valuing the donated item on a tax return and the rules can vary significantly.
For the purchaser of the item:
Donors who purchase items at a charity auction may claim a charitable contribution deduction for the excess of the purchase price paid for an item over its fair market value.  The donor must be able to show that he or she knew that the value of the item was less than the amount paid.  For example, a charity may publish a catalog, given to each person who attends an auction, providing a good faith estimate of items that will be available for bidding.  Assuming the donor has no reason to doubt the accuracy of the published estimate, if he or she pays more than the published value, the difference between the amount paid and the published value may constitute a charitable contribution deduction.
Therefore, the purchaser must pay more than the FMV for it to be tax deductible.  It is not based on the fact that the item was donated to the church; rather, it is based on the item's FMV.

Associated Deposits:
Fundraising money is to be deposited separately from Sunday offerings. This is necessary for the Church Administrator to maintain accurate records of tax deductible donations to the church versus potentially non tax deductible checks and, in particular, cash that cannot be traced to a receipt.

General Assembly 17

Be a witness for ONEness!
One of the last things Jesus did with his disciples was to bless them with the priestly prayer that appears in John 17. He prayed that, "I'm praying not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me because of them and their witness about me. The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind." (The Message)

In July we will gather as ONE for the 2017 General Assembly in Indianapolis. Thousands of Disciples gather from across the United States and Canada to demonstrate our unity in service to the Christ. We will hear inspiring messages, elect a new General Minister and President, hear about the results from Mission First! and learn together.

Bible studies on the theme text (John 17:20-21a) from scholars at Disciple-related seminaries are available online so you can go deeper into the scripture.

Why not post a "selfie" on social media with the tag #DOCWeAreOne.

Slash Small Groups
March Connection Groups

Jesus knew how to connect with people. He spent valuable time listening and getting to know people. We are emulating him by providing opportunities for our members and their guests to get to know one another around the table. Connection groups are a time when 6 to 8 people gather for a meal and connect with one another.

We want to thank our March hosts for providing a great opportunity for members and visitors to connect.  Hosts in March: the Breens, the Fowlers, the Ostranders, the Petermans, the Weeks', and the Wests.

We will plan another Connection Group weekend soon. Sign ups will be in the sanctuary.
