Curtis E. Lloyd Scholarship  
Deadline
is March 31st!
The deadline of March 31st is fast approaching to submit your application in for this year's Curtis E. Lloyd Scholarship. The Florida Rural Water Association (FRWA) offers five scholarships for up to $1,000 each to assist outstanding High School students realize their potential in tomorrow's water and wastewater industry. FRWA will award one scholarship to a deserving individual in each Water Management District annually. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, educational fees, books, and/or room, and board

The Curtis E. Lloyd Scholarship Program was created by the FRWA Board in 2008 in memory of one of its longest serving Circuit Ri ders.   Mr. Lloyd joined the FRWA staff in 1980 and worked for the association for 17 years. He retired in 1997 and stayed active until his untimely death in December 2007.

CEU Deadline - April 30, 2017
The deadline of April 30th is fast approaching for license renewal.  The Department of Environmental Protections requires that you earn continuing education units (CEUs) in order to renew your Drinking Water, Wastewater, and Distribution System licenses.  If you are not familiar with this process, you may click  here for more information.

The Florida Rural Water Association has a number of courses scheduled throughout the state that offer CEUs.  Any course that is taken on or before April 30, 2017 will apply to the 2017 cycle.  For a complete list of onsite training available, click here.  

If there is no training offered in your area or you cannot get away long enough to take a class onsite, FRWA has partnered with SunCoast Learning Systems to offer a variety of online courses.  These courses can be taken at your convenience.  Upon successful completion, SunCoast will contact FRWA and your CEUs will be posted to DEP.  Again, these classes must be completed before April 30, 2017 in order for your CEUs to be applied to the current cycle.  For a list of classes, types of CEUs offered and more information on online training, click here.

FRWA recommends Regular Water System Preventive Maintenance -- aimed at the prevention of breakdowns and failures. Some tasks should occur weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually.

Next week we need to perform any tank coating repairs as recommended by the manufacturer's specifications and recommendations.

  • Inspect Storage Tanks for Defects & Sanitary Deficiencies
  • Clean Storage Tanks as Needed
  • Structural Inspection of Tank & Coatings by Engineer 
  • Perform Tank Coating Repairs 
  • Clean, Inspect & Disinfect Aerator / Degassifier Screens, Sprayheads & Gaskets

Next week we should test our eye wash and emergency shower to be sure that they are ready for emergencies.

March Wastewater System Maintenance Recommendations
  • Inspect effluent ponds or storage tanks for defects or deficiencies. Repair as needed
  • Inspect a portion of lift stations and assess conditions. There are many different coating/lining options  
  • Perform inspection on all lift station wet wells to make sure none are in need of repair
  • Test eye wash and emergency shower
  • Inspect fire extinguishers
