Principal's Message
Deborah Bulkley
Dear Parents,

Many of us enjoy the ease with which we can use technology whenever and wherever we want.  We can access the internet to find directions to a store, answer our questions about absolutely anything, play a game, or text a friend.   As adults, we make decisions about how to use this vast source of information every day.  Our students often feel the same excitement about our devices in school and love having the opportunity to access technology for many of their classroom activities and lessons.  In school we have very specific policies to keep our students safe on our devices and we constantly monitor students while they are using technology.

At home our children have access to the internet on tablets, gaming systems, and computers without always having the same level of controls in place.  I did not have this concern when raising my three children, but I do now worry about my grandchildren being targeted by deceptive advertisements, adult content, scammers, bullying, or worse.  Knowing the potential dangers to children, parents may wonder when is the right age to get their child their own device. How can they keep away the bad that is out there while accessing all the good that is available on devices?

Whatever age parents decide is right for a child to get a phone or tablet, there are many ways to keep children safe while owning a device.  I hope parents start with a serious and ongoing conversation with their child about personal safety, but also that parents learn about different technologies that can keep their child safe while using any device.

There are dozens of apps which can be added to any phone or tablet to allow parents to place controls over the availability and use of technology.  These apps have a wide range of what they can do. Some can block sites with inappropriate content, limit the hours that children can be on social media either by time of day or total hours, see text messages sent and received, and even use GPS monitoring to track where your child goes with the phone.  Many of these apps involve a charge for the service, but some offer a free trial first.  These apps allow parents to set their own limits, so you can personalize what your child is able to see and do and the limits can be changed by you as your child shows growing maturity and responsibility.

Websites that can provide more specific information about online safety are Commonsensemedia.org and kids.usa.gov. You can also find reviews for many different services and apps if you do a simple Google search for them.

Enjoy using technology, but keep your family safe.

District Chorus Concert
Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Sanborn Regional district-wide chorus concert on Tuesday, March 7th!  The students did an amazing job!  A special thank you to all of the music teachers for all their hard work getting the students ready.

Student Council News
Our next philanthropic venture will be our annual Penny Drive. After our more globally focused fundraiser our Student Council has voted to team up with our local girl scout troop to raise this money in support of the NH Fish and Game, specifically to help with efforts to preserve and protect the endangered species here in NH. We have posters in the halls at school with information about various endangered species in our home state. Students are encouraged to bring in any spare change to add to the containers in their classroom. The class who collects the most will win a prize. Collections will start on  Monday, March 13

Thank you to all who participated in our theme days for Memorial Spirit Week! We will have another one in April so stay tuned. Also the student council will continue to operate the school store every  Monday  during lunch recesses. Thank you for your continued support!

Outdoor Recess:
Parents, please be aware that our students will be going outdoors for recess whenever the air temperature is 20 degrees or above.  Children should be bringing their snow pants boots, mittens and hats daily to be dressed warmly for winter exercise.  As the temperatures moderate, melting snow and ice will mean more slush and puddles on our playground area.  You are asked to send in a change of clothing for your child to keep in the cubby here at school in the event that they "find' a puddle and become soaked.  Clean dry slacks, shirt, underwear and socks should be in a bag labeled with your child's name and grade.  Thank you for preparing your child for weather changes and outdoor play at school.

Immunization Requirements for Fifth grade students:
Please be advised that when your child is age 11 years or older, and it has been 5 years or longer since their last Tetanus toxoid-containing immunization, they must receive a booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine.  If your child has a documented medical contraindication to pertussis vac cine, a Td booster is acceptable.  In addition, every child entering grade 6 must have had
 (2) doses of Varicella vaccine (chicken pox).  If your child had the disease of c hicken pox, this must be listed with the date of the disease on a recent physical history and exam form completed by your child's health care provider.   If your child is 11 years old, and has already received these immunizations, please provide a copy of the latest physical exam and updated immunization record to the health office as soon as possible.  This may be faxed to the school nurse at 603-382-1466. If your child has a well-child visit scheduled within this school year, please discuss these requirements with the doctor at the time of the visit, and provide a copy of this physical and updated immunization record to the school nurse. Thank you.

Thank you,

Think "Flying Marshmallows for  our next session of  Crazy 8s  on  March 27 from  6-7 PM.  We'll make marshmallow catapults and measure the distance they travel. We'll also make another contraption to see if we can make them go farther. It's time for math to become the cool thing to do after school. The club is available for grades K-3, all featuring hands-on activities.
