Hillsborough Township Lights Giant Menorah
On Wednesday, December 12th, the
Chabad Center for Jewish Life teamed up with Hillsborough Township for the annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony.
Miriam Krinsky from the Chabad Center for Jewish Life was on hand to lead the festivities, along with
Mayor Carl Suraci, Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley and
Committeeman Doug Tomson.
The annual event, included the lighting of the giant outdoor menorah, followed by a party in the Municipal Building.

Each year the New Jersey Municipal Managers Association (NJMMA) honors their members for outstanding service to local government. The NJMMA is an organization of professional local government administrators and assistants whose goal is to improve the quality of local government in NJ through professional management. The award process includes the submissions of nominations for numerous awards including outstanding managers award. The nominees for this award must have successfully implemented a specific exemplary project or program and/or have accomplished an outstanding body of work within the last 3 years. The committee reviews all the nominations during the summer and fall and awards are presented in November at the Annual NJ League of Municipalities meeting in Atlantic City.
Hillsborough's own Township Administrator Anthony Ferrera was awarded the outstanding managers award for 2017. In the nomination application Administrator Ferrera was described as one who encourages collaboration among departments developing a more cohesive working environment. With his outstanding body of work, he has implemented several programs that have contributed to cost savings and efficiencies as well as workplace enhancements which benefits residents, taxpayers, businesses and employees.

Alexis Feder Earns Gold Award

Alexis Feder, a senior at Hillsborough High School and a member of Girl Scout Troop 60719, was honored with a proclamation at the December 12th Township Committee Meeting for earning her Gold Award.
For her Gold Award project "Garden for the Hungry", Alexis helped to address the shortage of food available at local Food Banks by planting vegetable gardens to serve disadvantaged communities in local towns, including Hillsborough and Somerville. Alexis worked with the congregation of Hillsborough Presbyterian Church, including master gardener, Lora Fletcher to help her create the vegetable gardens and then donated vegetables to the Food Bank to help those in need have access to fresh and healthy food that is otherwise in short supply. Additionally, Alexis made a photo book of her journey which she will donate to the Children's Library of Hillsborough.
Alexis serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through her achievements, leadership, and community service, and we the Mayor and Township Committee are proud to have Alexis as a member of our community.
Mayor and the Hillsborough Township Committee, do hereby recognize and extend our sincere congratulations to Alexis Feder for having earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, an honor for both her and for those who have guided her, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Chloe Wong Earns Gold Award

Chloe Wong , a senior at Hillsborough High School and member of Girl Scout Troop 66880, was honored with a proclamation at the December 12th Township Committee Meeting for earning her Gold Award.
For her Gold Award project, Chloe enlisted Samantha Nuzio, the registered dietitian at ShopRite to create recipe booklets full of healthy recipes to be handed out with informational pamphlets about eating healthy at the Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA. Chloe then held a follow up event to see whether people kept their goals.
Chloe also planned activities and presented healthy eating seminars at YMCA and Hillsborough Recreation camps, distributed healthy eating pamphlets at local gyms.
Chloe serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through her achievements, leadership, and community service, and the Mayor and Township Committee are very proud that Chloe is a member of our community.

Eagle Scout Yash Piyush Parikh Honored with Proclamation

Yash Piyush Parikh, a Sophomore at Hillsborough High School and member of Boy Scout Troop 89, was recognized at the December 12th Township Committee Meeting for earning his Eagle Scout badge.
Yash's Eagle Scout Project consisted of the management and construction of four six-foot wooden benches for his temple in Parlin, NJ. Over twenty different people, from Troop 89 or otherwise, helped put in more than 200 hours into the project. Over the course of his Boy Scout career, Yash has served as a Patrol Leader, Librarian and Scribe.
In addition to his Boy Scout responsibilities, Yash is an active member of the Hillsborough High School Boys Volleyball team and Varsity Debate team, President of the STEM club, Officer in the Amnesty International Club and participated in the Waksman Student Scholars Program.
Yash serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through his high level leadership and community service and the Mayor and Township Committee are very proud that he is a member of our community.

Tickets Now Available for NJ Devils' "My Town" Hillsborough Night
NJ Devils vs Philadelphia Flyers, Jan. 13th
The "My Town" Series Program now in it's 4th year highlights New Jersey towns during National Hockey League games played at the Prudential Center in Newark. The New Jersey Devils tested the program during the 2013-2014 National Hockey League season with 5 New Jersey towns as part of their pilot program. The success of the initial program, lead to an expanded program during the 2014-2015 season and will continue with enthusiasm this season.
This is a great event open to all ages! Tickets and Group Packages will be on sale for township residents who would like to attend. The Hillsborough Police Department will present the Honor Guard at the beginning of the game. Hillsborough Township will be recognized throughout the game, including a group welcome on the scoreboard. Following the game, Hillsborough residents will be invited to the ice for a post-game photo! In addition, January 13th is Chico Resch mini stick night honoring former Devil and current color commentator Glenn "Chico" Resch. The first 9,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative mini stick.

What Township Residents Can Do with Fall Leaves
Keep Your Lawn Healthy & Green by Cutting and Leaving it!
With Autumn in full swing, the leaves have begun to fall and cover your lawn. Hillsborough Township encourages you to help the Sustainable Hillsborough initiative by Cutting and Leaving It. Instead of disposing of your lawn clippings and leaves, try leaving your grass clipping on your lawn. This practice helps keep your lawn healthy and green. In addition, instead of placing leaves at the bottom of your driveway, place them in a compost heap in your yard. Compost piles are easy and cheap to construct and help to reduce Hillsborough's waste. For more information about Cut and Leave It, read the brochure on the township website.
"If you currently recycle your lawn clippings and leaves by staging them for pick-up through the Hillsborough Public Works Department leaf pick-up program, you are already helping to avoid air pollution and wasted resources. However, you can do more by reducing waste at the source. Leave the grass clippings on your lawn when you mow, compost your leaves, and let nature do the recycling for you," stated Deputy Mayor McCauley.
The Hillsborough Public Works Department will be running their annual leaf pick-up program starting in November.

to our residents, you can request either an evening inspection on
Tuesday

Thursday
, or a
Saturday
inspection.
Yes, you can even schedule your inspection for a Saturday!
We understand not everyone can schedule an inspection without taking time off from work. Save your vacation and personal days for what they are meant for, you now have options. If evenings aren't convenient, we will do our best to book you for a Saturday.
But don't wait too long to decide because our Saturday inspection calendar is filling up fast!

Nai Disha: The New Direction Towards Education

Swara is a 15 year old sophomore at Hillsborough High School in Hillsborough, New Jersey. Her work with the Parikrma Humanity Foundation is what inspired her to write this article for the Mayor's eNewsletter. She can be reached at

The Parikrma Humanity Foundation in India is dedicated to serving underprivileged children. They have established four schools at different locations, offering K-12 education for 1,300 children from 53 slums and 5 orphanages. In addition, they provide 3 nutritious meals for their children, healthcare, and social programs. Parikrma's goal is to lower the dropout rate for high schoolers in India. They want to provide the poorest of slums in India with equal opportunities for success.
This
foundation is one of many that have started recently in countries where education isn't readily
available to everyone. This goal is common throughout many areas of the world, and the initiative of providing every child with equal education is quickly being implemented everywhere. After being introduced to the mission of Parikrma, I decided to implement my knowledge and experience to contribute to this cause in any way I could. Over the years, I have made steps towards providing ways to help these kids further their education. While on my trip to India this past summer and during the fall of 2013, I had the chance to spend time with the children while volunteering at Parikrma. During the time that I was there, I came to realize the hardships that these children go through in their daily lives. Each child's background, home life, and family situations were different and difficult to imagine. Despite these troubles, each and every child was eager to learn and grasp every opportunity to expand their knowledge. Through the experiences I had with these children, I understand the value of education, and how people from every corner of the world deserve the best chance at a bright future that they can have.

Somerset County Commission on the Status of Women is seeking nominations for its 2018 Outstanding Women in Somerset County awards program. Nominations must be received by
Dec. 31, 2017.
"We have many women in Somerset County doing amazing things every day," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh, commission liaison. "It is most appropriate that during Women's History Month, we take the time to publicly recognize them and say thank you."
