Decken Presents at Academy of
Chiropractic Philosophers - Australia
Philosophy Department Chair Bill Decken, D.C., ’86, L.C.P., DPhCS, traveled to Adelaide, Australia, last month to present as part of the Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) program presented by The New Zealand College of Chiropractic. Speakers at the February session included NZCC President Phil McMaster, D.C., ’85 (pictured on right), and Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. (left). This particular session of the ACP is being hosted by NZCC as part of a collegial arrangement between that institution and Sherman College of Chiropractic.
The Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers is a one-year course designed to enhance the understanding, depth and breadth of chiropractic philosophy. Sessions challenge the thinking process and the application of philosophy in the chiropractic profession. Successful completion of the program leads to membership in the prestigious Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers.

Sherman Hosts Private Briefing
at Berkshire Philosophy Event
As part of Dr. Scott Garber’s renowned Berkshire Philosophy Event, the college has scheduled a Sherman Private Briefing for alumni, regents and special friends in attendance. It will be held on Friday, March 31, from noon to 1:30 p.m. with a complimentary luncheon in the Wyndhurst Room of the host Cranwell Resort Hotel.
This event is NOT a fundraiser – there will be no pledge cards – but Sherman College representatives will enjoy sharing some news of the profession, latest research, developments at the college – and then hearing from the doctors in attendance.
If you are planning to attend the Berkshire Philosophy Event and are interested in attending the private briefing, please email Roger Sullivan, Sherman College’s senior director of institutional advancement, for details. You may attend the briefing even if you are not taking part in the conference.

Legacy Alumni Dinner Date Set for Graduates of 1977 and 1976
|
A Legacy Alumni Dinner has been set for Sherman alumni who graduated in 1977 and 1976. The event will take place on Thursday, May 4, from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Spartanburg Marriott at Renaissance Park, host hotel for Lyceum 2017.
The reunion dinner will provide a time and place for this distinguished group of early graduates of the college to see former classmates, share memories and stories from the college’s formative days, and reconnect with the college and each other.
“There is something special that happens when long-time friends get together to share stories and re-tell the interesting antics of the day,” says Director of Alumni Relations Marggi Roldan. “We had the pleasure of experiencing this last year with the pioneer classes of September and December 1976. Everyone enjoyed the moving and funny stories, and I’m pretty sure spouses and friends in attendance gained a new respect for the ground-breaking history they heard during the dinner. By hosting this Legacy Alumni Dinner, we hope to re-create the camaraderie that only those who went through an experience together can feel.”
The college also plans to capture this living history on video for posterity and hopes that our 1977 and ’76 alumni will attend with the spirit of telling the history of Sherman College through their eyes, ears and experiences. “We encourage alumni to bring photos, slide shows and scrapbooks and come ready to share their favorite memories for future generations to know what Sherman was like in the 1970s,” says Roldan, who plans to capture video through scheduled appointments for Friday afternoon on campus as well as at the dinner.

The continuing education department at Sherman College of Chiropractic is “Charting the Course” for the future and will be hosting its annual continuing education and homecoming event, Lyceum, May 4-6, 2017, in Spartanburg, SC. - League of Chiropractic Women 5th Anniversary Reception
Join the LCW in celebrating its 5th anniversary! Light hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served as they gather after the Women in Chiropractic Jam Session 6-8pm in the Bahan Library of the Scallon Building. Sign up with your online Lyceum registration.
- President's Welcome Reception / All-School Reunion
In the spirit of Southern hospitality, President Cordero invites all Lyceum attendees to a party on the first night. Catch up with classmates, meet new friends, kick back and relax, or cut a rug on the dance floor with everyone’s favorite beach music featuring the Catalinas. For our Sherman & Penn Straight alumni – if you graduated in a year ending in 7 or 2, meet up for photos with your fellow reunion classmates. Join us at the Marriott Azalea Ballroom on Thursday from 8-11pm. Admission price of $20 per person or $30 at the door. The reception will feature light snacks along with cash bar. - Showcase Sherman for Prospective Students, Friday & Saturday
Lyceum isn’t only about seminars and events. It’s about the future of our profession! Help us continue the Sherman College legacy by encouraging future colleagues who want to change lives through chiropractic and inviting them to Showcase Sherman Weekend where they will spend two full days learning about the many rewards of a career as a doctor of chiropractic; participating in leadership experiences to help them be confident and effective leaders through team building, planning and decision making; joining a palpation class with Sherman faculty members and leading intern; enjoying passion-filled discussions with practicing chiropractors and alumni
Meeting with admission counselors; and staying for the entire weekend and enjoying many Lyceum activities and sessions.
- Alumni Association Annual Meeting
Claim your space at the Association’s Annual Meeting on Friday from 12:30-2pm. Lunch is free to members current with their dues for 2017, honorary members, and all first- and second-year graduates with complimentary membership status. RSVP with your online registration if you are a current member by adding one ticket under the “optional items” of the registration process. If you will be bringing a guest with you, please add one ticket under “Alumni Association Lunch Guest” in the optional items of the agenda builder in online registration. The fee for your guest will be $15.
- Regents Reception
Members of the Board of Regents and President’s Circle are invited to an exclusive reception Friday evening from 6:30-8pm at the Marriott that includes heavy hors d’oeuvres and cash bar with wine, beer, and mixed drinks. Milestone regents will be recognized. We ask that Regents RSVP via their online Lyceum registration; call 800-849-8771, ext. 240, if you have not received a discount code.
- Comedy Hypnotist Show
Who doesn’t love some comedy? Who doesn't love watching friends do silly things while under a hypnotic spell? Erick Känd is here to entertain us with his amazingly funny show where you can see faculty, colleagues and current students do crazy things while hypnotized! Hilarity will ensue. Trust us. Event begins at 8pm and is FREE with your Lyceum registration. This will be a sold-out event, and tickets are limited. A maximum of two tickets are available with your registration. Light snacks will be available, as will a cash bar.

- Atlantis: Treasure of the Sea Banquet
Join us for a night of fun in the city that glows under the sea: Atlantis! With an underwater theme we feel like there will be mermaids and pirates a-plenty! The city will really be glowing as glow-in-the dark mini golf will be featured, as well as our DJ and his hot dance floor! Event starts at 7:30pm. Celebrate the closing of yet another awesome Lyceum with your friends, colleagues, and classmates! You can purchase tickets with your online Lyceum registration. Seating is limited to 400 guests. Deadline Extended: IRAPS Abstracts Due May 1
|
Sherman College of Chiropractic is now accepting abstracts for the 14th annual International Research and Philosophy Symposium (IRAPS), a peer-reviewed chiropractic conference that addresses vertebral subluxation research and philosophy of chiropractic. The deadline for abstracts has been extended to May 1.
IRAPS
will be held October 7-8, 2017, in Spartanburg, SC, and event registration opens in July. The goal of IRAPS 2017 is to bring leaders in philosophy and research together, along with practitioners who are centered on vertebral subluxation practice, to build a stronger academic community worldwide regarding the subluxation model of chiropractic. Our intent is to foster a view that the chiropractic profession is:
- Centered on vertebral subluxation
- Based on vitalism
- Dedicated to research
- Developing a discipline of philosophy
Topic examples for this year’s abstracts may include:
- How LACVS fits into the patient-centered model of health care.
- Does patient-centered care include concepts contained in chiropractic philosophy such as vitalism?
Abstracts are to take the form of short papers, having approximately 300 words. References are expected. Use 12 point font size throughout abstract. Each abstract undergoes a peer-reviewed process. Email your abstract and CV as Word documents to Director of Continuing Education Jillian Kersh, D.C., ’09, at [email protected]. CVs for co-authors listed in the abstract must also be submitted. The CV should include author’s educational background and other scholarly accomplishments.

Health Center Names Intern of the Month
|
The Health Center faculty recognizes interns each month who excel in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism and analytical and adjusting technique. The February 2017 Intern of the Month is Luis Alvarez of
Colombia, South America. Luis graduates in December 2017 and plans to open a Gonstead clinic with a fellow student and business partner Samuel Feinberg in Colombia, South America, or Raleigh, NC.
