This Sunday, March 26 @ First Unitarian
"Dancing in Faith"
with Rev. Janne Eller-Isaacs and Rev. Mark Stringer
9:15 & 11 am
Change is occurring at a more and more rapid pace. This reality makes the stable parts of our lives, like the church, even more precious. So how might we move into the risks and opportunities that even ministerial transition might invite?

Sharing the pulpit with Mark this Sunday is the Rev. Janne Eller-Isaacs, a life long Unitarian Universalist currently serving as senior co-minister of Unity Church-Unitarian in St. Paul. Janne has served as a Ministerial Settlement Representative for the UUA both on the west Coast and here on the Prairie and loves the opportunity to work with congregations in the midst of transition.

Immediately following the 11am service in the Auditorium:

Please join Rev. Janne Eller-Isaacs for a Q & A session regarding the upcoming ministerial transition.  Janne has served for many years as a UUA ministerial settlement representative, so understands many of the dynamics around this time of opportunity in the life of a congregation.

Skills Training

During this ministerial transition, Rev. Erin Gingrich, Laura Berardi - our Membership Coordinator, and some lay leaders are forming a team to help our congregation get to know each other better. We will use two of the tools utilized in community organizing- 1:1 meetings and house meetings.  Training will be offered in each skill simultaneously.  If you want to learn about both tools, join us for both trainings!

Inclusivity Squared:
Gray Area Thinking(TM) & Trans 101

Saturday, April 8, 10 am - noon, Auditorium
We’ve all heard the phrase, “diversity and inclusion”, but what does it actually mean to make a workplace or organization or even our personal lives more diverse and inclusive? How can we get beyond grouping and labeling of other humans according to the color of their skin, the religion they practice, their sexual orientation, or the country in which they were born? Can we really build a just and inclusive world, especially in this time of such legitimized division?

And what about “those” transgender people? Aren’t they just “choosing” to live in another gender or even with no gender at all? What’s up with all of that? Why do we have to get on their party bus?

Join national speaker and “inclusionist” Ellen “Ellie” Krug as she conducts a two-part presentation on inclusivity and personal perspective-building. This is a must-attend enrichment event for anyone who wants to “get it right” relative to living in a more inclusive world.  Best of all, the event is FREE!

Sponsored by: Trans Action Group at First Unitarian, Downtown Disciples, One Iowa, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, Iowa Safe Schools, and Urbandale United Church of Christ.
Death with Dignity meeting at WDM Library on April 11
First Unitarian's Death with Dignity group, part of the Compassion and Choices coalition, will meet on Tuesday, April 11 at 6:30 pm at the West Des Moines Library (4000 Mills Civic Pkwy) in the community meeting room.

We will be showing our Power Point presentation and getting to know one another. If this is a success, we will alternate our Sunday meeting with the Tuesday evening slot.
Outreach Partner for March & April

In March and April, First Unitarian Church is partnering with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (PPHeartland) is one of the largest and oldest reproductive health organizations in the Midwest, and we operate 14 health centers across Iowa and Nebraska. In Polk County we have three health centers and provide education, outreach and advocacy. The mission of PPHeartland is to provide, promote and protect reproductive and sexual health through health services, education and advocacy. For more than eight decades, we have been committed to cultivating communities where people have meaningful access to the reproductive health care they need, where sexual health education is comprehensive and equitable, and where individuals have the right to lead a healthy and meaningful life. Last year, we provided reproductive and sexual health care to 52,963 individuals across our affiliate, reached 55,414 individuals through our education and outreach services, and advocated to protect reproductive health rights in the communities we serve.

Get Involved!

There will be a number of ways to be involved in assisting PPHeartland in March and April. During the month of March, we are collecting items for our Book sale. You can drop off donated items at church in the bins under the Faith in Action bulletin board. Items accepted include books, magazines (less than 2 years old), tapes/records/CDs, DVDs & videos, games & puzzles. All items MUST be in good condition. Find more information at: http://desmoinesbooksale.com/

In April, we will be collecting items to be used by our clinic and education staff, and you can volunteer at our spring booksale April 20-24. More information on all of these opportunities will be available at our table in the gathering area and on the Faith in Action bulletin board.
