Reflections from Fr. Rick

John Bedell, an eighth-grader
in our congregation, recently shared his experience of growing-up at  St. Michael's and the impact this congregation and youth ministry has had on his spiritual formation. He shared about a life-changing event through Mike Beam's youth ministry and   "Soul in the City."  Middle schoolers and high schoolers went to a local church in Parramore and led a Vacation Bible School.  He wrote, "I saw the children's eyes light up with joy when learning about Christ and that touched me deeply, as it showed the moving power found in Christ's word. This event opened my eyes to the power of scripture in action, and inspired me to go on and collect toiletries to be distributed at that church for families in need."

John validates the reality that youth ministry is relevant and transformative and reminds us that teens are not marginalized members of the body, but co-creators and conspirators in the divine work of the church and God's redemptive plan. God has a track record of choosing teens to accomplish great spiritual feats from Joseph, Timothy, Ester, the early disciples, and of course, Mary, Jesus' mother. God uses teens to help change the world.

In a time when some folks wonder about all that's wrong with the young people and how things are not like they were when we were growing up, it's a privilege to be a part of a community that is willing to serve our youth.

This Sunday is the second week of Lent and Youth Sunday. In addition to an "adult" sermon, you will hear from two teenagers how God is growing them to love God, love others, and serve the world.  Please offer your prayers, encouragement and support.

In Christ's amazing love,

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we welcome and accept you, and we trust God to take you where God wants you in God's timing.  We want to be a safe place for you to experience God's grace, love, and presence with us. Welcome home, Beloved.

Mite Boxes and Lent Coupons

The Lenten coupons and Mite Boxes are in the church office or in the Narthex at church. Please be sure to pick them up and/or continue with the daily discipline  of counting your blessings during Lent!

All proceeds from the Mite Box- coupon project will help fund the Youth Mission Trip to Jamaica where they will be rebuilding homes ravaged by Hurricane Matthew, assisting in constructing  a new home for a deserving family, and visiting a local hospital.

The trip costs $1,500 per person and each participant  owes another $615 to date.  Eight dedicated members of our youth group are going on this inspiring  Mission Trip.  Mite boxes are due on Easter Sunday.
Linen Team

St. Michael's Needs YOU!
We are forming a New Ministry,  the Linen Team!
Could you help?

We are in great need of a team of folks to help care for our church table linens. We'll need a Chair or Co-Chairs, too. Seventy-five percent of our table linen use is for funeral receptions in Quigley Hall. The other 25% is table linen use for other important church ministries.

We need help with pick up, stain treatment, washing, drying and returning table linens to Quigley Hall for proper storage within a four day period. We also need help with keeping an inventory, storage by shapes and sizes, stocking cleaning products, replacing badly worn linens.....and more!

If this is something you are able to do either at home or at church and are interested in helping get this new ministry started, please call either Greg or Ashleigh in the church office. We've had tremendous demand on our linen use this past year, so your consideration to help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

The Gathering Feeds Many Every Tuesday

News from The Gathering
We have been experimenting a lot with  new main dishes. Last week Bobbie Lang made chicken and wild rice casserole. This week Bob  Brightman made sausage and peppers. One time Scott  Barnhart made roasted  brussel sprouts and, with Niki Nash, roasted potatoes with fresh rosemary!  We have also added ham mac and cheese, meatloaf, and baked apples to our repertoire. Next week it's ground beef  stroganoff
and the following week is ground beef Moussaka!

"Part of the excitement for us is utilizing the  available ingredients;  sometimes we have to stockpile ingredients for a particular recipe. We never know from one week to the other what our next culinary adventure will be," said regular crew member Bobbie Lang.

Every week, we pride ourselves on fresh cut fruit salad, fresh green tossed salad, and our signature bread pudding.

Extra Hands & Drivers Needed
We really need people to work in the kitchen and help with the pick-ups, especially during the summer (July, August September). It sure would be nice if other people were trained so that the burden doesn't always fall on the same people and we had some back-ups. Join in the fun and be part of The Gathering!

Youth News

YOUTH SUNDAY - This Sunday is Youth Sunday.  Come and worship Christ as our Youth lead the service!

Thank You, congregation and community, for your generosity at last Sunday's car wash to benefit our youth going on the summer Jamaican Mission trip! Because of you, we set an ALL-TIME high record  for a St. Michael's car wash! Thank you again for supporting our youth as they seek to be Christ to others, while strengthening their own relationship with the Lord.

Hire A Youth
The high school students registered for the Jamaican Mission Trip are available for washing windows, raking leaves, general housework, and other chores in return for donations for the Mission Trip. Contact Mike Beam to schedule some helping hands!

LENT ARRIVES.... AND ON WE GO!

We must say a BIG word of WELCOME to our new Youth Choir members who joined us at the end of January.  MAGGIE AND NOLAN RENFROE have joined us, jumping into a "Baptism by Fire"!  Their first service was the huge Choir Festival at the Cathedral, then we needed another reader for the February Evensong, and Maggie saved the day by agreeing to read.

We could still fit about 4-6 more kids in that front pew!  Contact Andrew for more details about the amazing ministry of our young singers in the Youth Choir.

As Noted  in a recent email and last Sunday's bulletin, when listening to your favorite non-Christian radio station, listen for "God's Word in Popular Culture."  Hear something of God, or Jesus, the work of the Holy Spirit, or our shared experience of "walking with Christ" in a song?  Send me the title!

Piano Lessons  - Andrew has space for four extra students.  Contact Andrew for details.

Female Vocalist Needed.  Maybe You?   The music at the 6 pm Sunday service has been male-voice dominated for 37 years! Surely, it is time for a change! We're trying to find that one female vocalist, called by God to assist with leading the music at that service.  There is no rehearsal during the week! We simply run through the songs before the service each Sunday.  Contact Andrew if this is you!
