Introducing Humanities@CMU
In a letter to the Dietrich College community, Bess Family Dean Richard Scheines announced the Humanities@CMU Initiative, which will be led by Andreea Ritivoi, head of the English Department. The initiative will create a distinctive CMU brand in which the humanities shine in their own right but are also integrated synergistically into all areas of a university that is known for its technological leadership.
Students Examine Differences Through Writing Awards
High school and college students in the Greater Pittsburgh area are encouraged to submit entries to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards. The awards offer a platform to elevate their voices in conversations around discrimination, prejudice and sexual and gender identity.
From “To Kill a Mockingbird” to “Frankenstein,” hundreds of books are banned around the country every year. The American Library Association tracks the number of books removed from circulation, limiting their availability to the public. The Department of English raised a spotlight on this issue during “Banned Books Week.”
