Frank Herrera: On the Road Again
Photographic Exhibition
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts a photographic exhibition, Frank Herrera: On the Road Again running through April 9, 2017. A native of West Virginia, Frank Herrera has traveled the world with his camera. The images he captures feature the hallmarks of his style: remarkable light, thoughtful composition, and exquisite detail. In this intimate installation, Herrera shares photographs of some of his favorite destinations.
Mr. Herrera is a juror for the 2017 Cumberland Valley Artists and Photographic Exhibition.
Since 1968, Frank Herrera has pursued a freelance career devoted
to commercial and art photography, specializing in photodocumentary work. He has been affiliated with Glen Echo Park, a part of the National Park Service in Glen Echo, MD, as an artist-instructor since 1975. He is responsible for developing and implementing a creative photography program with emphasis on public access to the arts. Herrera took a series of photographs during "The Perfect Moment" Mapplethorpe protest at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1989 for which he is renowned.

Classical Guitarist - Rodrigo Paiva at the
Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church

Rodrigo Jonas de Paiva was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1981. Son of guitar musician Cleivan Paiva, Paiva lived much of his childhood in the city of Crato in northeast Brazil in the state of Ceará. Cleivan Paiva realized his son had a gift for music and started to teach him guitar while he was very young. Rodrigo began guitar lessons with his aunt's teacher. In addition, Paiva took piano lessons from Neide Barreto. As a boy, Paiva began participating in his father's concerts singing and playing on his father's keyboard.
In 1994, Rodrigo Paiva moved to São Paulo and continued to develop his musical skills by playing guitar with other musicians and listening to music. During his teenage years, he began to play the cavaquinho, an instrument similar to the ukulele, and participated in several musical groups improving his skills. In 2001, Paiva joined the Free University of Music (ULM) and received an advanced-level certificate for popular guitar in 2008 under Professor Marco Prado. In 2007, Paiva joined the Cristal Group, recording 1 CD and 2 DVDs. In 2009, Paiva began his music education studies at the University Center Sant'anna, graduating in 2011.
Rodrigo Paiva moved to the United States in 2012 and studied jazz at the Frederick Community College under the direction of Anita Thomas. He currently lives in Frederick, Maryland, performing as a guitarist and teaching music lessons in guitar and music theory. Moments, Paiva's first recorded solo guitar CD, was released in 2013, and is available at his concerts and by emailing him at: [email protected].
Guitar performance experience: Rodrigo Paiva has over 19 years of performance experience including recitals as a guitar soloist, playing in bands, weddings, and church groups.
He plays a wide-range of styles in his performances including selections from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, contemporary Christian, and his own solo guitar compositions.
Teaching experience: Rodrigo Paiva's teaching experience spans over ten years and includes instructing students of all ages: adults, teenagers, and children. He offers private and group guitar lessons in the Frederick, Maryland, area and surrounding communities.

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts invites the public to a catered dinner and lecture, on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. The lecturer will be Mary Jo Arnoldi, Curator of African Cultures and the Arts at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Arnoldi will discuss "The Ciwara Masquerade: Performing Work, Memory, and Identity in Contemporary Mali. The dinner will be at 6:00 p.m. and the lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m. Reservations must be made prior to March 24, 2017. Participants can attend the dinner and lecture or the lecture only if they wish.

The Friends of Tolson's Chapel (FOTC)
4th Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner
The Friends of Tolson's Chapel (FOTC) will host their 4th Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner in Hagerstown, MD on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at The Academy Theater Banquet & Conference Center, located at 58 E. Washington Street in Hagerstown. The proceeds will help with ongoing operations and to maintain the chapel and cemetery grounds at Tolson's Chapel in Sharpsburg, MD.
This year FOTC will celebrate the people of Tolson's Chapel, built in 1866 by the African American community in and around Sharpsburg, with a display of historic photographic portraits.
The gala event will feature the mellow jazz duo of Bob Sykes (piano) and Lou Hines (bass). Other entertainment will feature Master Storyteller Renee Emanuel who will share several of her favorite stories. A Silent Auction will also be taking place, along with raffles, throughout the evening. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with a reception, and dinner by Applause Catering will be served at 7:00 p.m.
The event is open to the public, with purchase of tickets by March 31, 2017. Ticket price is $65 per person, or $55 for FOTC members, and special pricing for a limited number of full tables of six. The Friends of Tolson's Chapel is a 501(c)(3) organization that was created to restore and interpret the important historyof Tolson's Chapel. The Chapel stands on the ground of the Antietam battle, which led to the Emancipation Proclamation, and signifies the beginnings of a free life and a free community - a church and school - for African Americans. Reception to Follow Please mark your calendar for an afternoon of exquisite choral and instrumental music in the upcoming installment of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church's FREE Classical Music Concert Series. Joseph M. Martin's moving cantata "The Rose of Calvary" will be performed by the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church choir under the direction of Jeffrey A. Clise. This concert also will feature notable area vocalists, instrumentalists, and music ensembles. Special guests include: Gail Farmer, Soprano; Shelly Harr, Saxophone; Brenda Slick, Concert Piano; The St. Andrew Handbell Choir; and the Toot Uncommon Flute Ensemble. There is no charge for admission, but a free will offering will be received to benefit the St. Andrew Presbyterian Music Department's projects.

Steel Magnolia's is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Helped by her assistant Annelle, Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, Clairee, the former Mayor's wife, and M'Lynn, whose daughter Shelby (the prettiest girl in town) is about to marry a "good ole boy." Robert Harling's Steel Magnolias is truly touching, funny and marvelously entertaining.

Fast Track Public Art Project
An Outdoor Photo Mural Exhibition Celebrating the People of Hagerstown
Do you know Hagerstown, Maryland, and its people? Can you capture the truth of life in Hagerstown in a photo? Then this opportunity is for you!
The City of Hagerstown, in partnership with the Washington County Arts Council and the Visit Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitor's Bureau is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition of Faces of Hagerstown (FOH), a signature public art feature of the new Hagerstown Cultural Trail.
Faces of Hagerstown is a large-scale outdoor photo mural gallery focusing on the human face and the truth of the Hagerstown experience. It will be located along the Hagerstown Cultural Trail in two prominent locations: (1) on a layered chain link mesh screening at the West Antietam Street Entrance Plaza (artist rendering above), and (2) on a restored artistic masonry wall and custom decorative pole covers along the Lee Street segment of the Trail.

Senior Capstone Exhibit Sonia will present Silver Gelatin Prints. She creates portraits that tell stories. Her work portrays displaced residents who have lost everything. Her goal is to capture their way of living in inner cities in all sorts of conditions. By shooting the displaced, she wants to bring together a community so that we can stand with each other through tough times. Visually, Sonia wants to bring awareness to the truth that the homeless have a story to tell. More importantly, she wants to dispel the notion that being too lazy and not wanting to go out and better their lives causes homelessness and begging. Some homeless who are living on the streets are veterans who came back from fighting the war and are too proud to ask for money. Her series of photographs "Looking Beyond the Shell" is a truth statement that captures the harsh reality of life.

Jean Cushwa Art Scholarship Award
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Announces the Jean Cushwa Art Scholarship Award. The $1,000 Scholarship will be awarded to one Graduating High School Senior and a resident of Washington County each year who plans to pursue studies in Visual Art, Art History, Art Education, Design, Architecture, or Museum Studies. Funds are to be used to support tuition and fees for the first year of college. The winner will be chosen by a selection committee, comprised of representatives from the WCMFA's Board of Trustees, Board of Advisors, Director and Staff.
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts offers internships to qualified college students with an interest in Art, Art History, or Museum Studies. In an environment of supervised, hands-on learning, internships allow students to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of the museum and to contribute to a variety of museum projects and functions. Applications are accepted in the spring of each year, for 1 summer internship position with a stipend; other volunteer internships may also be available.
The Cushwa College Internship has been established through the estate of Jean Cushwa and her heirs.

"Two Museum Thefts that Made Headlines in Baltimore"

Gary Vikan, Former Director
of the Walters Art Museum (1994-2013)
Dr. Gary Vikan served as director of the Walters Art Museum for nearly two decades. Since retiring from that post in 2013, he has devoted his time to research and writing. His new memoir, Sacred and Stolen: Confessions of a Museum Director, published by SelectBooks, tells a story of looted fakes, forgeries, and failed exhibitions. In this entertaining lecture, Vikan will recount some of the unexpected and little known challenges of running an art museum. Copies of his memoir will be available for purchase for $20.00 in the Museum Shop.
