April 2017: Inclusion at TBANS

TBANS is Your Child's School
One moral of the Passover Story is that every person is a valued and valuable member of society, no one better than another, and we are all created in the image of God. So it is in the spirit of this month's holiday that we remember why and how we work so hard to be an inclusive school.

Meredith Polsky, TBANS Developmental Support Coordinator, and national expert in Jewish special needs, offers this explanation of the benefits of inclusion. And reminds us that "inclusive learning environments benefit everyone":

It develops an appreciation that everyone has unique abilities.

It develops sensitivity, respect and empathy, as well as feelings of empowerment, and the ability to make a difference.

TBANS List of Developmental Specialists
TBANS Kesher Program, described here, is our approach to supporting every child, and working with you to most effectively facilitate your goals for your child.

We are often asked about specialists in our community and the advisability or process for accessing services. To that end, we developed this Resource List for you (and your friends, family, and neighbors). We are happy to talk with you about if or when or how to consider a specialist's involvement

Every parent has questions about their child's strengths and progress. We are always available to consider your questions with you.

Inclusion Matters: Two New Resources!
Special Education is Good Education

Our own Meredith Polsky has just published her first book. "I have a question about death" is the best book ever written for parents to use when facing a child's questions about losing a loved one. Though written for children with special needs, the concrete language and simple pictures make it an effective resource for all parents of young children.

Even Sesame Street got the message! On the day of the First Seder (April 10), they will introduce a new character, Julia, an adorable, playful girl with autism. This 60 Minutes Episode explains how the producers came to understand the importance of Julia's contribution to Big Bird's neighborhood, and why they believe your child will benefit too.
