April 18 (Tuesday)   6:30 pm
Lecture: Dante and English Romanticism: Voicing Freedoms
A lecture by Diego Saglia (Università di Parma). Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, British culture saw a surge in the interest in Dante and his Divina Commedia. Writers, artists, translators and critics engaged with his figure and work with unprecedented intensity, thereby stimulating a widespread fascination with Dante that also inspired an increasing number of original works of fiction based on episodes from the Commedia. The talk discusses some of these rewritings by focusing on poems by liberal and radical authors such as Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt and Felicia Hemans, who remade Dante to promote ideas of political and social freedom and in the process confirmed his status as a crucial figure of modernity.

Italy and the Euro-Mediterranean Migrant Crisis: National Reception, Lived Experiences, E.U. Pressures (joint event with Columbia University)
Screening of Come il peso dell'acqua and Q&A with the director, Andrea Segre.
In line with the tradition of the theater of narration, the movie features actors who rely on storytelling, maps, and the display of objects to address a multi-faceted subject of socio-political relevance such as contemporary immigration. Come il peso dell'acqua is a reminder that border closure policies are bound to fail: like water, migrants will continue to exercise pressure unless the European approach lends an ear to migrants; direct stories, as this film does.

His bold and lush paintings were featured in almost every major museum exhibition benchmarking that era including Zeitgeist (Berlin) in 1982. Some of his milestones include the Biennale of Paris, San Paolo and three iterations of the Venice Biennale.

La Campana Sommersa

City Opera invites you to experience this sumptuous production of Ottorino Respighi's ethereal, fairy-tale opera in which the mortal realm collides with the supernatural.

This unjustly neglected masterpiece has not been seen on a New York stage in over 80 years. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. Conductor: Ira Levin; Stage Director: Pier Francesco Maestrini.

Maurizio Cattelan Art Installation: "America"
Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan's bold, irreverent work skewers social complacencies and reimagines cultural icons. On the occasion of his 2011-12 retrospective at the Guggenheim, which featured virtually every work he had ever made suspended from the oculus of the rotunda, Cattelan announced his retirement from art making. Five years later, he returns from this self-imposed exile with a new, ongoing project at the museum. For "America" Cattelan replaced the toilet in this restroom with a fully functional replica cast in 18-karat gold, making available to the public an extravagant luxury product seemingly intended for the 1 percent. Its participatory nature, in which viewers are invited to make use of the fixture individually and privately, allows for an experience of unprecedented intimacy with a work of art. Cattelan's toilet offers a wink to the excesses of the art market but also evokes the American dream of opportunity for all-its utility ultimately reminding us of the inescapable physical realities of our shared humanity.
